VE Day - are you doing anything?
We will having a minutes silence at 11am, then listen to Churchill's speech at 3pm, and have afternoon tea at 4pm, at the side of our house, so we can talk (shout) to our neighbours who are doing the same thing,
My dad served in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 1942 - 1946, and saw action in Sicily and Italy in 1943-1944 and North West Europe in 1945 (he passed away in 2000). |
Re: VE Day - are you doing anything?
A few houses have bunting up, and quite a few were outside at 10:10 for the flypast. But I reckon that's all that will happen after the 2 minute silence.

Re: VE Day - are you doing anything?
Not really, tbh I didn't even know about it until I noticed the bank holiday moved and I looked into why.
This'll likely be the last major anniversary of a WW2 event in an era when a good number of those who were involved in it are still alive. At a push the 80th maybe. |
Re: VE Day - are you doing anything?
I don't have a Union Flag, but hung my English flag instead.

Hoping for the cloud to go away so I can sit in the garden with a beer.

Did the minutes silence this morning.
Going to pour a glass of cognac shortly then lay this bad boy down and start building it: Attachment 28349 Flown by W/O Henryk Dygała of 302 Polish Sqadron. Involved in supporting the Normandy landings hence the invasion stripes rising from the underside. |

Re: VE Day - are you doing anything?
We didn't really participate in any of the celebrations. We did the minute's silence, and did celebrate inside the house. We didn't go out the front though. My neighbours did. In two groups. One group actually sealed off half the road and had a full-on street party (which went on, with lots of drinking, until about 3am. They were not following the social distancing rules, with kids riding up and down the road, and at least one conga.
The other were a single family. They all sat around in their front garden, having a few drinks. Not too much of a problem, except one member of the family who decided he was going to lean against the tree on the pavement outside his garden. This was a problem for me because I needed to go shopping. With a trolley full of a *lot* of food, to maintain social distancing, I had to cross the road, and walk up the other pavement. To get up my road, I then had to cross the road back. He stood there and watched as I did that. |
Re: VE Day - are you doing anything?
We had a local DJ on his bike entertain us. He rode up and down several of the roads on our estate and we were all careful to keep our distance. So far since lock down he has raised £25,000 for local key workers, charities and cheered up lots of people unable to socialise.
