Virgin Media having more issues UK wide with TV and Internet

Quote:

Virgin Media customers across the country have complained of a complete lack of broadband after the entire network appeared to suffer an outage.

Thousands of customers complained they had no internet access today.

A statement from the firm was not immediately available but online tool Down Detector said there had been a large surge in reports of outages across the entire country of people struggling to use their TV and internet connections.

Yep, I noticed my router switched me to my backup vodaphone connection about an hour ago.

Looking at my monitors, it seems my VM connection was offline from 17:18 to 17:28.

How much is a backup connection (or do you only pay when it has to kick in)? I might look into this.

Just get a pay as you go wifi box and it's there if needed. Also make sure it is not with the same company you have your broadband with in case its a national outage that affects there mobile as well. So if your main connection is with VM then have a wifibox from say Cellnet or H3G

Yes, you have to pay for it, just like any BB connection, I have a Vodaphone connection as its quite important to me to stay connected.

As noted above, you can also get dongles that you plug into some routers to give you 3G/4G connectivity (again, you have to pay).

I prefer my backup to be a solid landline connection.

Had slow loading web pages twice, with Chrome saying no internet connection, however SH3 remained on. According to VM service status page for area 30 (Teesside) it's affecting broadband and interactive services and should be resolved 28th April 00:00

There is a message from VM

Latest update
Time of update: 20:30

Our teams are urgently looking into the issue and will work flat out to fix it the moment the problem is fully identified. We know how frustrating this is and we apologise.

At 9:17pm using Chrome Version 81.0.4044.122 - SH3 stayed on, had 6 browser tabs open, however 2 tabs went off, both tabs that went off were different pages on CF, the rest stayed on.

Tried to load isitdownrightnow.com to check the sites that wouldn't load, and isitdown was offline.

Refreshing pages (tabs) brought up same pages that wouldn't load, however the working ones still loaded.

Closed Chrome and reopened and all pages loaded. (9:25pm)

Can't be a Virgin DNS issue as the drops are occuring for those like myself who don't use VM DNS,

Hopefully they know what the problem is and are either working in it or have solved it.

These issues also appear to be affecting BT, Sky and TalkTalk.
https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.ph...-media-uk.html

Quote:

UPDATE 9:06pm

A quick look at some feedback from customers of Sky Broadband, BT and TalkTalk suggests that they too also saw some disruption around the same three periods, albeit seemingly not to the same level as Virgin Media (i.e. the complaints have not been to the same scale or volume). The issue at BT was however much bigger than the other two, but that may just reflect the operator’s size as the biggest ISP.

We know that some of these operators do make use of capacity links from Virgin Media, although equally the issue could be further up the routing/peering chain. At present there are three clear peaks of related complaints at around 5:30pm, 6:15pm and 7:12-7:29pm.

Paul 27-04-2020 23:18

Re: Virgin Media Outages - 27 Apr 2020

Some sort of core network or routing issue by the sound of it.

aye mine did too. its a shame the call centres are in india now. i know with the pandemic its probably daft as the call centres wouldnt be open but it just sucks now that even if you have a fault you wont be able to get any help. i really like the indian staff too but sometimes you get one who literally cant understand what you're saying and i feel so sorry for them.

with all the price rises im just bamboozled why they think this cost cutting process is a good way to get new customers or keep existing customers

I was affected and am posting this as a customer, I don't (yet) know what the problem was.
The line seemed mostly stable as my VPN remained up apart from 1 glitch but router reported internet down and browsing didn't work or at least didn't seem to but some computers in house remained OK until tried to get to new site.
To me this looks like something related to DNS (not VM's DNS as I don't use it) or starting new connections. It impacted by browser on VPN too.
Using nslookup - DNS on router (OpenDNS failed) but setting server to say Google DNS and things worked or at least resolved.
$ nslookup
nslookup> www.bbc.co.uk
<can't contact server>
nslookup> server 8.8.8.8
nslookup> www.bbc.co.uk
<resolves>
nslookup> <router>
nslookup> www.bbc.co.uk

Indeed as Virgin stated a hour ago that the issue was fixed in the early hours of this morning. It was not caused by a spike in usage or a lack of network capacity.

If you were watching linear TV on the network it’d be unaffected. On demand should have went down.

Also the VM service status page was unavaible 404 IIRC.

Yep, definitely different this time as it's still not working yet. Status page shows its being worked on though. Cheers all.

Thanks spiderplanet, that makes sense.

I don't suppose this is something that can be flagged up or fixed automatically?

Well it was certainly flagged up. No trouble noticing this one! (Those of us working at home lost our connections too)

The network can be tolerant of some faults, but only really "expected" ones like power failures and cut fibres. Weird software behaviour is much harder to anticipate. It can sometimes be handled with watchdogs etc, but they don't tend to be seamless. (That may well be what happened in this case, given that it recovered within 10 minutes after each failure)

This is going to sound nuts but here goes. 3 days ago I started to hear a deep droning sound which was vibrating against my ear drums. After two days of hardly any sleep and feeling like I’d been through a washing machine cycle as a last resort in the middle of the night when the humming was worst I put my ear to the V6 and wondered if this was what was causing it. Turned it off and the noise stopped. Now my V6 is in the corner of the house and yet this sound was vibrating my ear drums no matter what room I was in. What the hell was all that about? The next day the network goes down.

Have you tried turning the V6 on again since?

Switched back on after Network problem circumvented and it’s purring like a kitten. Not a hard drive about to fail

It's happening again - I'm losing interest access every 15 minutes or so, and the V6 box is losing connection at the same time - happened 3 times in the last 40 minutes.

Power supply vibrations? It used be common with transformers in the olde days (eddy currents in the iron formers), but most devices don't have transformers these days.

Pretty sure it isn't the same thing. That's something local to you.

Probably, but the user experience is the same... ;)

Mine has been up and down for the last 2 weeks most of the time it's ok I seem to lose connection for small periods at a time every other day. VM status page says everything is ok. I just assume it's everyone hammering the connection.

I was losing TV at the same time, but appears to have calmed down now.

Rock steady here.

No outage since the last one of the 27th (which was technically just after midnight, on the 28th).

Whatever issue you are having is not national, mine is still rock steady (and was this morning).

No issues here, either. Would love a report as to what the issue was on the 27th though, especially given how widespread it was.

It'snot been that bad here in Cardiff lately but today has been a nightmare. It feels like it is fine for 2 or 3 minutes then drops for 30 seconds.

I would think of tethering my smartphone but my 4G coverage is awful.

This is like every Friday around 6:00-7:00 onwards. Is it on a timer? My son gets his online gaming orders for the weekend at this time and it’s screwed him 2-3 weekends on the trot.
