Hub2ac or Hub3?

Virgin is sending me a Hub 3 tomorrow. I've had a Hub 2ac for a few years now, I was apart of the Hub 3 trial, (white version) but I went back to 2ac afterwards.
Recently I've woken up to find some of my Google Nests, smart plugs, NowTv boxes disconnected overnight from wifi. This has happened 10 times since New Years.
Even my mobiles can't connect after this happens 'no ip address found' is displayed. Though some devices stay connected.
I have around 25 devices connected to wifi and 2 wired.

Do you think the Hub 2ac can't cope with the number of devices?
So Virgin is sending a new Hub 3.
Will that cope with wifi devices?

Or should I buy another router and use Hub 3 in modem mode or even keep Hub 2ac in modem mode?

Thanks for any advice.

A third party router will always be better than anything ISP's give.

This. I wouldn't recommend either hub as a router, do yourself a favour and buy a 3rd party one. A good Asus or even netgear will be leaps and bounds better than what you have now.

On that, the Hub3 will give you much more reliable bandwidth due to the sheer number of channels it can bond.

Ditto, my 2ac failed to boot one day (about a year ago now) so I've been using my trial Hub 3 ever since. With the current firmware the Hub 3 is much better than it was during the trial so give it a go first before spending money on an separate router.

I used modem mode for years, mainly as the original SH was dire. Stayed that way even when it went to a SH2ac. Had problems with my router one day, set the SH back to router mode and it hasn't missed a beat since. It works so I'm not changing. SH2ac is rock solid for me, but I don't have 25 devices !

Hub3 of course, but with your own router.

Personally i use a Hub3 in router mode though as it is all i need.

My trial 2ac failed last week. So I attached my white trial Hub 3 and all is fine. All this when my Hub 4 arrived for my main circuit.

Why do routers/hubs have such a limited lifespan ? Other electrical devices last decades, but routers seem to self destruct after a few years. Deliberately manufactured to fail? ;)

El Cheapo. That said, on my third circuit, the 7 year old SH2 is still operating.

Our SH1 is still working OK, though the power supply exploded a few months ago. Running on a universal adapter now.

The problem in most consumer electronics is the use of cheap, badly made, Chinese capacitors. Lost count of the number that I've replaced recently.

Is the lack of lead in solder these days still a problem?

Re: Hub2ac or Hub3?

OT. Apparently the Chinese capacitors have too little acid in the electrolyte and the aluminium electrodes corrode internally drying out the electrolyte.

I am not aware of issues with lead free solder. Now mostly Tin with a small amount of Antimony.

Interesting. Thanks.

I have the Netgear Wireless AC 1750 and it's utter crap for wireless signals so not everything 3rd party is better than the hub 3

I've been looking at Google's Nest Wifi

Re: Hub2ac or Hub3?

I installed the Hub 3 yesterday morning. None of my Google Nest mini's or Smart Life plugs would connect onto wifi. After many reboots I managed to get each one on wifi. Overnight my Nest thermostat went offline, smart plugs lost wifi, Youtube on V6 kept sticking on loading videos, even though it is wired.

I called faults, the guy i spoke to said I have too many devices and would experience lag.

Hub 2ac never struggled as bad as this new Hub3 until the wifi failed on it.

I've got a Hub2ac connected to Google Mesh wifi, and it's rock solid.

He said that to get you off the phone as it is rubbish.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to buy Google Nest Wifi. Hub3 should be fine in modem mode?

Yeah it's solid in modem mode
