Harry and Meghan to step back as senior royals

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51040751

Quote:

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and divide time between UK and North America.

In a statement posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they plan to "carve out a progressive new role within this institution".

They said it came after "months of reflection and internal discussions".
Not sure how this will work.

Are we really expected to believe that she won't continue to trade in on his name? She's spent her life actively seeking the limelight, she's not going to give up now.

HOW can she cash in on his name.

She's a name in the own right with some 28 TV programs & 8 Films to her name.

She had to quit Suits when she got engaged.

So how many people had heard of her before taking up with him or any other high profile male she is alleged to have been seeking? "Suits" was the only series where she made anything other than 1 or 2 appearances.

Their security needs arise because of the constitutional politics and history of the British State. It is therefore the British State’s ongoing responsibility to pay for their security. It’s not as if it isn’t in our interests to do so either - we don’t need some nutter or extremist trying to hold the country to ransom by snatching one of them.

Not particularly Den, you've got to admire the Queen's 'stickability'. However they shouldn't get a blank cheque and earn their keep. They also shouldn't dominate the headlines with their boring private lives when there'e a lot more important things going on.

It is unfair on the British taxpayer if they aren't going to earn their keep promoting Britain.

However it will be interesting to see if they can earn their own income and how they will do so.

We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. No of course not, they want to have cake and eat it but it doesn't work like that, you're either in the family or your not, you don't get to have the privileges without giving anything back. I notice he wants to keep what's laughably called a cottage but might be prepared tp cough up a bit of rent!

How can that be? Their security needs arise from birth and from constitutional and political matters that are entirely beyond their control. That being the case, making their security contingent on their continued cooperation with those matters would have a whiff of blackmail about it.

Other royals have managed it, with varying degrees of success. I suspect their allure in America will be such that they won’t have too many problems.

In June the pair trademarked the Royal Sussex brand, applying it to dozens of items and services from pencil cases to sport activities and education training.
As one of the most famous couples in the world, their brand has the potential to be highly lucrative. Their joint Instagram account @sussexroyal has more than 10 million followers, while Meghan was the most Googled person in the UK in 2018.

They are senior Royals though. Prince Harry might not be in line to the throne but he is still the Grandson of the Queen, the son of the future King and the brother to the King after that.

Which is why he can't detangle himself from the Royals so easily. There will always be security and PR concerns for whatever it is he does next. I also think there is a problem if he trades on this Royalty in future work, if they seek to become mega celebrities and trade on their connection to the British Monarchy. I am not saying they will but that'll be the concern. The Civil List is nothing really and coming off it to 'become financially independent' is a bit of a cop-out if they're going to start making far more money by being Royalty in America.

It does raise the question of what we are doing to these people though. Trapping them in a role defined for them from birth that they cannot easily extract themselves from. :erm:

They are senior royals. The term has meaning in terms of the level of official work they do, but is derived from how close to the line of succession they are.

If they simply “step back” from the level of official work Harry has done in the past they are still senior royals because Harry will be the king’s son, and eventually the king’s brother. The reason this is all so officially shocking is that H&M have tried to circumvent this by starting that they plan to “step back” from being senior royals, not just from the official work of senior royals. Harry has come pretty close to renouncing his titles and claims.

I’m passing-acquainted with my local (not royal, but hereditary) duke and I don’t consider him “mine” either ... neither does he consider himself ours. He gets a “your grace” when the local flower show opens but that’s just the tradition. On the years when he does the formal opening and gets a tub of chocolates as a thank-you he wanders round sharing them out afterwards.

The nobility is to all practical intent a relic in this country. With the single exception of the monarch and immediate family I don’t think anyone with a hereditary or life peerage would expect any formal recognition in any but the most formal of ceremonial circumstances.

Crisis? Not really. Global warming is a crisis. The Royal family are a boring irrelevance and I don't know us/the media obsess over them. Maybe they just don't like the way thing are going in the UK, fair enough, let them go. Many other young people might follow suit and leave the pensioners to their tabloids.

Well, the visit to Rwanda in February 2016, four months before she started seeing Harry, wasn't because of her "royal connections"...

And in 2014 (two years before she met H), she became an Advocate for Political Participation and Leadership for the women's agency of the United Nations.

Strange that on the one hand allegedly wanting to avoid royal type duties, but on the other seeming to want to do a lot of those sorts of things.

Why would anybody in Rwanda have known that she appeared in a TV series?

Their priority was having a TV and watching a US English language TV series over having clean water? Yeah right, although it wouldn't be completely surprising. She was there as Ms A. N Other. The two recent Canadian appearances were solely due to her acquired royal connections. Any future appearances, along with the publicity will also be due to that. She doesn't do anything concrete, other than promote herself.

The Rwanda visit was just as Ms A. N. Other and after any actual work had been done. That is set out in the article by the charity itself.

Quote:

While visiting a school in Rwanda in February 2016, she taught students to paint with watercolours using water from a newly-installed pipeline in their community.
Her words form the article.
Quote:

Access to clean water in a community keeps young girls in school, because they aren't walking hours each day to source water for their families. It allows women to invest in their own businesses and community.
Forever racist and sexist.
Her own words again, reported by the BBC.

Quote:

On the pair's first official overseas tour last year with their son, Archie, the Duchess of Sussex told teenage girls in a deprived part of South Africa that she was with them "as a woman of colour and as your sister".
Reported by the BBC based upon actual facts.
Quote:

The Sussexes' new charity is expected to be global, linked to Africa and the US, rather than domestic - and will have a commitment to female empowerment.
It was revealed in December the couple had made an application to trademark their Sussex Royal brand across a string of items including books, calendars, clothing, charitable fundraising, education and social care services.
She is the one still seeking publicity and attention. Hardly a case of wanting to step back from the limelight.

Quote:

Both Prince Harry and Meghan have said they are interested in continuing with their charity work, with the duchess visiting two Vancouver-based women's organisations this week.
Quote:

On Tuesday she visited a charity in Vancouver which campaigns for teenage girls living in poverty.Justice for Girls said Meghan visited to "discuss climate justice for girls and the rights of indigenous peoples".
As if those those don't affect white males.
Endless hypocrisy from her and her supporters.

It's when their point of view mirrors what they've read in the tabloids it gets boring. Who can say they don't like this woman, if they've never actually met her?

If somebody puts themselves in the public eye and their actions contradict what they say, then they should be criticised. Eg He might be "retiring" from public duties, but she has shown that she has always been determined to seek attention. How are the 2 visits she made while in Canada retiring from the public gaze? Her actions speak louder than her words.

She is the one focussed on race, as her quotes demonstrate. Imagine what would happen if a white male was only going to focus their attention on white males. All hell would let loose.

She's clearly not the nice person she's made out to be. My opinion has nothing whatsoever to do with other people's opinion, and is based upon hard facts and what she says and does.

I couldn't resist the pointing out use of the word "their" to qualify a "white male".

Was that built-in political correctness or just a slip of the finger?

I don’t know any tabloid called that. I’m mature enough to refer to businesses by their correct name. Pretty sure on CF you’re suppose to do the same. Infraction time for you? (Don’t push your luck with me).

It saddens me that we live in a country where a disgraced former tabloid editor who posted fake pictures of our troops and was complicit in the large scale hacking of people’s phones can accuse an actual war hero of being unpatriotic and 16,000 *redacted* “like” it.

I (mostly) disagree with "hating" things, because hate is such a negative emotion which blinds rational thought and discussion- I understand strongly disliking things, but you can have a reasoned discussion about those things; if someone hates something, it becomes an argument about who’s right, rather than a debate about what’s right - the hate becomes all-consuming, and reason leaves the discussion.

Anyone who served front-line in Afghanistan, especially in a FOB in Helmand Province.

Lieutenant General Richards said that this was the heaviest persistent combat the British Armed Forces had experienced since the Korean War or the Second World War.

Also flying front seat in an Apache over Terry Taliban and his SAMs and RPGs sounds fairly heroic to me...

Quote:

The portion of the money that funds the Royal Family that comes from the taxpayer is called the Sovereign Grant.

This money is taken from the profits made by the Crown Estate, which is the Royal Family’s independently managed commercial property arm.

The profits go to the treasury to help with the administration of the country, and 15 per cent of those profits is given by the government as the Sovereign Grant to help fund the activities of the Royal Family.

This includes the upkeep of the palaces, as well as the official duties of the members.

The core grant, based on this 15 per cent figure, was £49.3m for the year 2019-18, up £3.6m on the previous year.

And from 2017-18, the Sovereign Grant was increased to 25 per cent in order to help cover the £368m costs of updating Buckingham Palace.

This means that the total amount for the 2018-19 year, taking into account the £32.9m increase, stood at £82.2m.

At the end of the year, any unused money in the Sovereign Grant is moved into a reserve fund, which is also used to help pay for the palace upkeep.

The royal accounts state that the Queen’s expenses for 2018-19 were £67m, so this year, £15.2m is being put into the reserve.

In the same year, the Crown Estate provided £343.5m to the Treasury, which was an increase of 4.3 per cent on the year before.

This means the 2020-21 grant is expected to be set at £85.9m.
tl:dr - the money to pay for the Royal Family (£82 million) comes out of the Crown Estate (£343 million), with the balance going to the Treasury.

(Even if we did pay for the Sovereign Grant, it is the equivalent of two pence per person per week).

nb- I’m not a Royalist

You sure you're not a fan seeing as you're not using the full cost to arrive at that figure, when you take everything into account they cost this country 350 million every year in cold hard cash and that figure will only be going one way and it isn't down
