Virgin Media to give FREE broadband speed upgrade to over 1 million homes

Virgin Media to give FREE broadband speed upgrade to over 1 million homes.

https://www.t3.com/news/virgin-media...-million-homes

Quote:

The resulting upgrade will elevate the broadband speed for eligible users on Virgin Media's M100 package. The speed for this package is currently listed as an average of 108Mbps, but Virgin is expected to significantly raise broadband speeds to hit this mark, and exceed it, more consistently.

Quote:

If you're eligible, Virgin Media will contact you, updating your speed automatically and sending you a notification on completion, so there's even no need to go hunting around in the terms and conditions.

Re: Virgin Media to give FREE broadband speed upgrade to over 1 million homes

Seems a bit vague about what the actual upgrade speed is going to be (I already consistently get 108Mb/s, so assume not much of an upgrade for me...).

Re: Virgin Media to give FREE broadband speed upgrade to over 1 million homes

I wouldn't be surprised if they just move M100 customers up to another tier so they have one less to maintain.

Re: Virgin Media to give FREE broadband speed upgrade to over 1 million homes

The increase is for the M50 tier at present to merge it with M100 as far as I understand it.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has this morning announced that all customers still stuck on one of their slower superfast broadband packages (e.g. 50Mbps) – equating to over 1 million subscribers – are to be upgraded to “ultrafast” download speeds of 108Mbps (6Mbps upload) for FREE.

Big deal, they offered that upgrade ages ago to those that opted in.

Re: Virgin Media to give FREE broadband speed upgrade to over 1 million homes

So in that case it won't be the same group of customers that will see the increase.

As Hugh points out its a bit vague.

Press Release is here now

https://www.virginmedia.com/corporat...st-speed-boost

Quote:

Starting today, more than a million Virgin Media customers are set to enjoy a completely free boost to the provider’s M100 broadband, meaning they’ll benefit from average broadband speeds of 108Mbps - around twice as fast as the UK average.

Under the plan, more than half a million Virgin Media customers can expect to see their broadband speeds double with some seeing their speeds increase fivefold. For most customers, this will mean they can enjoy ultrafast broadband significantly faster than the top services offered by many other internet providers.

Eligible customers won’t pay a penny more for their services with their speed boosted automatically. A notification will be sent to these customers once their upgrade has been completed.

No, this announcement is not about upgrading M100 customers. It's for eligible customers on lower tiers to M100.

Thanks for the clarification, Ben - much appreciated.

Think you should rewrite the press release for them minus the hyperbole! ;). ATM 100mb might read it as though they are getting an upgrade...

In this instance, I don't think it's the press release that's the issue, the website linked in OP does a terrible job of explaining the uplift. Virgin's actual press release is clear it's 50mbit -> 100mbit.

Angua 08-01-2020 07:08

In other words the 50mbit customers will get 100mbit at no extra cost, where 100mbit customers get nothing.

It's non news. The free upgrade to 100mb has been there for over a year for anyone that asked. It's getting like politics presenting the same good news as 'new' several times....

The last time any specific download speed upgrade programme was in place was around 4 years ago.

Virgin Media is rewarding its existing broadband customers by offering them the chance to upgrade from existing speeds of (up to) 50Mbps, 100Mbps and 152Mbps to more powerful speeds of 70Mbps, Vivid 150Mbps and Vivid 200Mbps.
In the last year it has probably been the situation that the triple bundle including 100Mb is around the same cost as a triple bundle including 50Mb was before those stopped so there has been an easy upgrade path between the two, but that's not the same thing.

Re: Virgin Media to give FREE broadband speed upgrade to over 1 million homes

We had the 70mbs upgrade and it's been rock solid. 100mbs is as fast as my network router and switches currently support. Since at most there's only two users this is adequately fast. Still a freebee (for now) is always welcome. :)

I think this is also about bragging rights when comparing VM to the other ISP's with little cost to VM as those on 50 and 70 don't exploit their BB to the limit or they would have moved to a faster option anyway.

As far as I remember there was a 'free 50 to 100mb upgrade' button to press in 'My Virgin Media'.

T3 is an unmitigated pile of trash. They have a lot of what are probably chatbot generated bumf just there to get some google search results and ad impressions.

Whats the price difference between the two prior to the increase?

Will those who were on the 50mb package now be paying less than those on the 100mb whilst on the same speed?

The answer will be no. Those that are uninformed are ripe to be fleeced ( unless they threaten to cancel ;) )

Re: Virgin Media to give FREE broadband speed upgrade to over 1 million homes

So just noticed a banner on my account page saying my speed has had a boost and my package is now shown as M100 instead of M50. Checked the hub and the configuration has indeed changed. I haven't ordered this so presumably it's a "free" upgrade.
How come Virgin are still selling M50 on their site?

Well if you were ok with M50, ask for a downgrade and a discount. Worth a try ;)

Sounds like a good plan.

It's possible M50 is still being sold for those in areas that haven't had the upgrade to stop people ringing up and asking for a free upgrade to M100 before the area is ready.
