For All Mankind

Having seen the first 3 episodes I must admit I'm greatly impressed.

The storyline of how the US would have reacted had the USSR (then) had beaten the US to land the first man on the moon and then the first woman folowed by the US reaction makes for compelling viewing.

Produced by Sony Pictures Television and so well written.

I look forward to the rest of the series.

 That was the teaser for season 2. We are waiting for an air date and it will be posted in the tv schedule thread as soon as we get it.

Well what a fantastic season and an amazing finale. I don't know what the plan is story wise for subsequent seasons and how long they want to to keep going on for but this series is simply fantastic and I want more more more.

Re: For All Mankind

The creators have a 7 year plan so let's hope Sony/Apple are sticking with the investment. Best alternative history show out there.

It really is. I know everyone loves to mock me for my views and opinions on tv series but this really is superb and what I call a proper serious scifi drama. You are lucky that you have got two seasons to plough through because waiting a week for each this season has killed me.

I don’t think there’s a conspiracy against your tv show tastes. :D I know I think you sometimes look for hyper-realism in the wrong places but that’s just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions. ;)

Nowhere near as good though. Halo got me thinking last week about the extreme contrast in current tv series atm; they are either superb or completely ****. This is one of the superb ones which i cant wait for every week and become completely immersed in it.

Re: For All Mankind

Well it shouldn’t … for all it’s a very well made show, the premise is nuts. The N-1 could never have landed humans on the moon. The required level of complex engineering was simply beyond the USSR. They made great strides where they were able to steal secrets from the West (such as the Tupolev Tu-144, aka Concordeski, or Buran-Energia, their space shuttle) but where they couldn’t, their own scientists just weren’t up to it.

Even if we allow the idea that they might have somehow managed it (without blowing up on the pad and causing what was possibly the largest man-made, non-nuclear explosion in all history) the economic fundamentals that drove the USSR to its demise in the early 1990s could not possibly have changed as a result of that, which means even if they got to the lunar surface, they couldn’t have sustained a moon programme. The Apollo programme pushed America to the limits of affordability and it was in far better economic health throughout the Cold War.

Don’t get me wrong, I follow the show and I enjoy it, but the idea that the Cold War has somehow lasted right to the end of the 20th century with the Soviets funding not only vast conventional and nuclear armed forces, but also an enormous interplanetary space programme, is completely bonkers.

How about not trying to be some kind of snob (or muppet) and just explain WTF you are talking about. :dozey:

Re: For All Mankind

Hate me if you will but the first people to arrive on Mars (realism) will be be delivered by SpaceX. It is the only company/Government agency concentrating on it. It is the whole reason for the existence of SpaceX.

Even he says it may not be in his lifetime, but that is SpaceX's goal.

Now that's realism.

Re: For All Mankind

Watched season 4 Episode 1 last night - really enjoyed it.

It took me an extra fifteen minutes to watch this episode, because I was freeze-framing through the intro, where they do a voice-over/video/news headlines montage on what has happened since the last series (usually a ten year jump), and it’s fun (imho) freezing and reading the newspaper pages to see the similarities and differences between our (real) timeline and the diverged timeline of FAM. :D

Paul 12-11-2023 19:18

Re: For All Mankind

Yes, I watched that (did freeze it tho).

The episode was an ok start, we'll see where it goes this season.

For All Mankind Season 5 confirmed

https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi...-5-newsupdate/

Quote:

Following its fourth season, which finished airing earlier this year, Apple TV+ alternate history/sci-fi show For All Mankind has been renewed for a fifth season - but there's a twist.

Not only will the show be coming back for season 5, but there will also be a brand new spin-off series alongside it called Star City.

The new show will take viewers back to a key moment in the original show's alt-history retelling of the space race, when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the Moon.

However, this time the story will be explored from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, engineers and intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space programme.
