UKTV HD free for Christmas

It seems UKTV HD channels are available to lower packages for Christmas. I've listed only the ones I don't normally receive on Mix.

W HD
Alibi HD
Eden HD
Christmas Food HD

Have you not had your bottle of Full House single malt yet?

Shouldn't that be malt vinegar?

VM would argue that we get free BT Sports channels, free HD versions of many more channels, a new free UHD channel etc.

Of course, we still pay for this, albeit indirectly.

I have to get the Full House package to access the programming I want, Mr K. But I do object to paying for all the dross that goes with it.

Well one person's dross is another's must have. I don't watch any Sky output, but still pay for it. It would be good if we could tailor to exactly the channels we want but guess that's not profitable.

To be fair on VM, it has been argued that the BT Sport arrangement helps to attract and retain customers, which helps to keep prices down whilst offering extra premium channels to Full House Customers at 'no extra cost'.

Apparently, this attracts customers more than the addition of Sky Atlantic would do.

Of that there is no doubt Richard.

I think it depends how you structure it. Clearly, some people are attracted to the number of channels appearing, regardless of content. However, wouldn't it be good if you could subscribe to a 'quality max' package that only provided the present selection of HD/UHD channels plus Sky Atlantic HD and AMC HD together with all the 'free' terrestrial and news channels, plus the all the main subscription on demand services including Amazon and Starzplay at a discounted price through Virgin. Now that would be much more to my taste. Virgin would need to price it to what was sensible, of course, but it should stem complaints about paying for 'dross'.

l see OB we are still waiting for Starzplay.

Yes, we are, but it's only a short wait until Virgin irons out the glitches.

Bringing the thread back to topic, I wasn't aware that we had to pay for UKTV in HD or otherwise - possibly because I never watch any of the rubbish shown on these channels?

Re: UKTV HD free for Christmas

Generally speaking, Full House has to be taken to obtain the HD channels, though this has become more relaxed recently.

Not sure most of the rubbish on those channels benefits from being in HD

I was speaking in general terms, as opposed to just UKTV.

Well... on the one hand, there's more incentives available to lower-tiers to encourage higher-tier take-up which ultimately probably helps the economics of the higher tiers for everyone.

But yeah.. people on the higher tiers then wonder what they're paying extra for when it's given away to lower tiers.

A balancing act I guess, and no doubt come January there'll be lower-tier customers complaining about the loss of these freebies.

That'll be because they (probably) filmed it on film, it's the old shows that were done on video that look awful.

Although as they're releasing video shot Doctor Who on Blu Ray, I guess there is still room for improvements.

Tbh I was being sarcastic ! , I can't see any difference in these old sitcoms in HD ! However PQ isn't the reason the watch them. Some of the 1960's BW Steptoe and son episodes on Drama are barely of broadcastable quality, but they are still brilliant. The script and actors is eveything, PQ an irrelevance.

Curiously, one channel that would benefit from HD would be the Drama channel, and yet that is the only UKTV channel not in HD at the moment. Why is that?

It does not have a +1 channel either OB as yes it would be nice for viewers to watch it in HD.

No it's not, the other UKTV channels not available in HD are Really and Home.

I imagine that nothing much will happen in that respect until at least the split between the BBC and UKTV has taken place.

You're right, sorry, I forgot about them! They seem to have disappeared from my radar!! Those two channels appeared to be quite popular when they first launched, but they seem to have regressed over the last few years.
