Ethernet not working
Ethernet not working so I tried a new Ethernet cable that I had on my laptop so I know that cable works but still no internet, Wi-Fi is ok.
I fitted a second pci internet card and selected that but still no internet connection. Any ideas? |
Re: Ethernet not working
Have you installed the drivers?

Yes but I will reinstall the drivers. |
Re: Ethernet not working
switch your hub/router off if u have just plugged it to the new ethernet card and leave 30 secs and switch back on, it may need to assign a new ip address to the new mac address.

I will try that out |

I have performed that procedure but still no luck, of coarse the network card that tried may be faulty. |
Re: Ethernet not working
Did your issue start after doing the Windows 10 1803 update? If it did and you need ethernet then try rolling back to the previous version until your issue get fixed if you cant find the fix online.
Check the link below for a possible fix. https://www.drivethelife.com/windows...indows-10.html |

What about the link i provided that may fix your issue? |

The Win 10 was installed by the OEM and there are no restore points to roll back. |

Ken you still haven't said if you tried the fixes on the link i gave you? You're not giving out any useful information on your replies so it is difficult for anyone to help you. |

The security software on my laptop blocks the that site ( not the pc that I am having probs with the Ethernet card). |

Re: Ethernet not working
If it's never updated or set any restore point since you bought it then take it back as there is obviously something wrong. All OEM should have auto update set and large enough disc space set aside for restore points even with a large W10 update.
Why did you ask earlier how to turn off auto update if you've never had any? BTW my security blocks the site do to it promoting downloading driver talent to fix the issue which is a scam. It'll do a scan for you, indicate a few outdated or missing drivers and ask you for money to fix them. The free version of driver booster will fix the main ones anyway. Just don't accept any of the extras it offers and uninstall it afterwards. |

I tried those two links but they did not help so I did the 1803 update, (took a long while) but still no Ethernet. ---------- Post added at 21:06 ---------- Previous post was at 21:05 ---------- Quote:

Re: Ethernet not working
Does device manager have a !!! On the ethernet devices?
It is very strange you have tried 2 ethernet cards and still doesn't work. Have you tested ethernet on the other computer using the same port on the modem? |
Re: Ethernet not working
Don't tell me you are trying to run a Tiny computer on windows 10!
Who's the OEM Ken? It shouldn't really make a difference. Then again it could be why they went bust! |

it is a Intel core DUO, ASUS motherboard with 8 meg RAM plus a ASUS video card met all the requirements to run Win 10. The company who went bust was VivaTech was based in Leathhead area. ---------- Post added at 04:37 ---------- Previous post was at 04:35 ---------- Quote:
I have plugged the Ethernet cable into another pc and that works ok. |

If you can't fix it you may have to nuke the system and do a clean install unless you want to take it into a repair shop. Or if you want a faster system consider spending on a new one? |
Re: Ethernet not working
Try and get a live Linux DVD/CD - some are really very small downloads and can be burnt to CD or USB. Boot from that and see if Ethernet is still broken. If so then it hints towards something hardware. If it works in Linux but not Windows it hints to something in Windows.
Linux sounds scary but many now look similar to Windows and live DVD/CD will boot into the OS and likely offer a nice easy way to launch Firefox. At this stage we are simply ruling out hardware. If it doesn't work in Linux we can possibly assist in using Linux tools to debug the issue but most expertise here will be Windows. |

Some thing I must consider |
Re: Ethernet not working
Might seem silly (and it's often the silly things) but . . how many ethernet ports are on the PC rear, and are you plugging into the right one?
May be an idea to start from scratch, remove and refit to ensure things are correctly settled into their slots? Look for simple errors before getting into complicated areas ;) |

I have re fitted the card in the slots on the mother board several times to ensure that it is seated ok. One Ethernet port on the mother board and another on the Ethernet card I have fitted. ---------- Post added at 16:36 ---------- Previous post was at 16:08 ---------- Quote:
I think that I have found a USB to Ethernet Adaptor from Clasohson Article number 38-3732. |
Re: Ethernet not working
Assuming the system information is showing the adapter as correctly configured, try from the command line (cmd) ipconfig
This will show if the adapter is active and if it has been granted an IP address in your network. |

Re: Ethernet not working
Still no luck with this Ken? Whats your next move, reinstall Windows or treat yourself to a new computer?
|
Re: Ethernet not working
The "media disconnected" message can have a couple of meanings: Either the cable really is disconnected or DHCP has been disabled.
ipconfig /all will report the DHCP status of all the adaptors amongst a shedload of other stuff. If it says "no" then you'll need to re-enable DHCP. It's possible that an update has changed this setting for the wired connection particularly if you were using WiFi at the time. I'm not running W10 so I can't tell you where this setting is. |

Re: Ethernet not working
I would try the Linux test as suggested and if that works then you know the issue is with Windows so you could then clean install which should hopefully fix your issue.

Re: Ethernet not working
Given that the PC is showing that the interface is all running correctly, sounds to me more that the Superhub is not issuing an IP to wired devices.
Try a reboot of the SH. You will probably need to issue an ipconfig /renew command on the PC. This makes a DHCP request for a fresh IP number from the SH. This is normally done while the PC is booting up. If still no joy log into the SH and check to see that it is being told to issue IP's to the wired part of the network. HTH If you're using your own router then you need to look at its settings rather than the SH |
Re: Ethernet not working

If the wired connection works just fine on my laptop wired that shows the SH is working ok |
Re: Ethernet not working

so, what do we know so far . . 1) wired internet suddenly stopped working 2) a new card - with drivers - still doesn't work 3) wired works on a different PC using the same cables logic points at the PC, could be a setting that is configured wrong, could be a motherboard fault. If it's a motherboard fault how do we diagnose it? |

I thick that I have come to the conclusion that the mother board is faulty, how I can prove it I do not know. |
Re: Ethernet not working

As mentioned you prove it using a Linux CD if it works on Linux then your PC is fine and it is a Windows issue which would likely get fixed with reinstalling it. |

You could always go wireless if you only want to spend a small amount or as you say ask the bank of pensions for a new pc.
