British Transport Police said officers were at the scene and warned people to avoid the area, in London's West End.
"Oxford Circus Station is closed while we investigate a customer incident," Transport for London said.

No evidence of shots fired'

The Metropolitan Police says in a statement:

"To date police have not located any trace of any suspects, evidence of shots fired or casualties.

"Officers continue to work with colleagues from British Transport Police in the area of Oxford Circus.

"Updates will be provided as soon as we have them.

"If you are in building stay in a building, if you are on the street in Oxford Street leave the area.

"Officers are continuing to search the area."

And the loss of his Twitter verification tick recently, clearly highlights this.

I think people need to start acting more responsibly. If we're not careful someone who's panicking about nothing is going to start a stampede in which people are killed or maimed. That's just doing the terrorists' work for them.

Re: Incident at Oxford Circus

Piers Morgan got in to a bit of a twitter spat with Olly Murs over his earlier tweet, said he was wrong to tweet to people and tell them to evacuate when the Met Police were saying stay in shops etc.

Well that's the world we're in now sadly isn't it. Idiots posting all sorts of guff without any real foundation and without thinking of the consequences. Morons.

Yes, it is pathetic and dangerous. These people increasingly lives their lives according to what other people tell them online, despite the fact that they ought to know by now that so much of it is ill informed and even malicious rubbish. Where's the common sense gone? Don't they think for themselves anymore?

As it is 16 people have been injured in the chaos, all of it caused by other people being irresponsible. How long before people die?? Then the media will be having a feeding frenzy reporting that fatalities have resulted from an entirely unnecessary panic driven by nothing...

Re: Incident at Oxford Circus

So now actual terrorists have learned that all they really need to do is create the illusion of an incident, and the snowflakes will do the rest for them.
