Updated: Zimbabwe's President Mugabe Resigns after 37 Years of Rule.

Shocked no thread on this supposed coup in Zimbabwe, where it looks like the days of Robert Mugabe ruling Zimbabwe like a despot are nearly over. Personally, about time too. Could this be the start of an African 'Arab Spring'?

No it won't be the start of anything, the people that take power will be the same people that propped Mugabe up all these years, that's why there wasn't a thread on it, no point, nothing's going to change

I am shocked that he made so much money out of the poor in his country.

The poor people of Zimbabwe were forced to pay for his lavished lifestyle.
It would NOT surprise me if this country gave financial aid to Zimbabwe. As they were a poor country

One suspects he will leave the country pretty soon and will go to some far flung country to live out the rest of his days in grandeur and luxury.

Perhaps if he does not go quietly he might end up the same way as Ceaușescu and Mussolini and others in history.

Preferably like Kadaffi or Sadam.

In that area I would guess a machette would be the weapon of choice

No need for violence! Either impeachment or criminal charges is the way to do this if he refuses to go.

One hopes that change is a peaceful as possible with Mugabe dealt with legally, his cronies also. Reports suggest that many such army moves in Africa do result in elections and new parliments.

It was still Rhodesia when I visited. I contracted mumps and tonsilitis at the same time so was not a very happy boy for some of the trip but I do remember Victoria Falls, just a small closed kiosk but clear paths and one of the wonders of the natural world free to view. It really was a prosperous nation.

It took a special kind of dictator to take the bread basket of Africa to the basket case of the continent. One hopes that now the country can be rebuilt for the benefit of its people rather than the elite. Not holding my breath though as Africa seems to breed dictators and one party states that fail.:(

I hope his missus is enjoying her stay at the Travelodge in Windhoek. I expect that's where he'll be off to soon.

Exile was agreed one suspects before his resignation.

Re: Updated: Zimbabwe's President Mugabe Resigns after 37 Years of Rule.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Mugabe

Robert Gabriel Mugabe (/muˈɡɑːbi/; Shona: [muɡaɓe]; born 21 February 1924) is a Zimbabwean revolutionary and politician who served as the President of Zimbabwe between 1987 and 2017.[1] He previously led Zimbabwe as Prime Minister from 1980 to 1987.

Wikipedia reflects his Presidency in the past tense. At long last.

Jubilation on the Streets of Zimbabwe at the moment. It's like they have won the FIFA World Cup, many times over.

I recall when Mugabe and Nkomo were looked upon as a ray of hope for the future. Just as in so many cases in Africa and elsewhere, that went well didn't it...

He'll have all sorts of dirt on all sorts of people so he's probably done a very generous deal which will see him continuing to live a life of luxury and keeping his ill gotten gains.

Certainly not but Zimbabwe needs to become far more open to the outside world as it is in dire straits economically and the populace are not as deferential and tolerant as before as many want clear change and improvements.
