White adapter plug
 

Hi guys.

I am doing a self install on virgin tomorrow. I have located the white box where the cable that goes into the hub is but there is also another cable coming out the box that has a plug on the end of it? Never seen this before any clue what it's for?

It won't let me. It looks like a white 5 volt charger plug but the cable comes straight out the white box. Says virgin media on it.

Was it left by a previous occupier? I suspect it's the cable they used to connect to their modem and you can replace it with the new one you've been sent.

But I'd still like to see the "plug". Can you post a photo somewhere else, and a link on here maybe?

I have been told that it is a power supply so there is no need for a green box on the street but the plug needs to always be in for the router to work. I will try to link a pic

If you're in a FTTP area I could be the power supply for the unit outside (forget what is called) but its most likely a HDU which is a splitter that has no loss, but needs power

It is definitely a power supply for the unit outside just never needed one in my last house so seemed strange that it needed power

I think it's called an ONT (Optical Network Terminal)

Yup, that's an ONT power supply.

You can tell that's what it is as it's connected to coax.

An HDU has a normal power connector.

So you'll need to leave it connected and plugged in.

I think I replied to this on the thread you created on the Community Forum

Normally there is a big Fibre to coax converter somewhere on a road that connects to multiple addresses. You can tell what they are as they're much bigger and make a noise as they have fans and other power to them.

From that point it's then coax to your home.

With the newer FTTP area installs, the fibre is installed all the way to an address, and then each home has a converter. But these then need their own power supply.

Thanks for all your replies really appreciate it. One last thing if I may. If this is already installed and previous owners had virgin. Why did I get a text message saying we need to run a cable to your property do you want to be home. Text yes or no?

If it's all installed correctly at the house, then you shouldn't need that.

Oh, I may have to revise my previous replies.

It seems I'm wrong about the HDU. They can be connected via coax to a power supply.

However they still need to be connected and powered, so it doesn't really change the situaton!

Thats a power supply for the newer HDU's (2016 and later models).

Basically you either have too many splitters or you are too far from the cab.

But yes it needs to be on :)
