SKY Sports and BT Sport price drop

Seen some intresting prices in the past week from both parties. Only impacting SKY customers just now but I wonder if SKY and BT are maybe having a mini price war ahead of the summer.

SKY offering SKY Sports to existing customers for £18.00 over the next 12 months. The real intresting point is the price change for BT Sports. BT Sports for SKY customers was £22.99 per month on a 12 month contract. This has now been dropped to £14.99 per month on a 12 month contract. I can't see anything on the BT website to suggest this new price is a short term offer. The BT Sports package also includes the AMC channel and Boxnation.

Granted the above prices are for SD channels only however £32.99 per month is not bad at all. Just a few months ago BT Sport + SKY Sports + Boxnation would cost a SKY customer £62.49 per month. It's a significant price drop.

As I have no sky sports and BT sports via virgin, I am having to watch Middlesbrough v arsenal on my minimal sub sky box (luckily it is on sports mix channel)

If I had to suffer SD quality pictures all the time I might well stop watching tv!

It's extortionate if you ask me. Especially if you're not into football.

I don't know how many stadium-games other Sky Sports subscribers go to, but a Premiership rugby game can easily be £45, internationals closer to £90.

As much as I dislike Sky's subscription costs, that's my line of thinking in paying for it. It does help that BT is included in XL of course.

Not sure, but I suspect it is to get people hooked on the sports channel content then they continue to subscribe after the initial year at the normal price?

I'd hold off from signing up to a new Sky Sports contract just yet, in case the rumours about the new packaging and prices for Sky Sports are correct.

Someone just into football may well find it cheaper to subscribe to the football channel/s only.

What rumours are these?

I was asked by sky to participate in a survey the other day that was basically about Sky Sports package pricing.

It didnt seem to say much about splitting out football though.

Coupled with their recent "split" in sports packs on NOW TV in others countries.

http://www.nowtv.it/sport_offerta/

Chose the Italian football pack for €19.99 per month or full SKY Sports for €29.99.

Sounds a good idea if you're only interested in one sport. But not so good for those who want to watch several sports as it seems like you'll end up paying more than the current price.

Would Virgin Media have to replicate such packages to their customers, or could they bundle them all together in one package at an extortionate rate?

Re: SKY Sports and BT Sport price drop

My guess is that football will be split across 2 channels - requiring the full Sports package, as currently sold. This is probably to attract fans of other sports who see the current pricing too much to justify if they aren't interested in football as well.

I would imagine that Sky will sell the Sports channels to Virgin Media at the 'negotiated' price, and then Virgin would be able to package them as they thought fit.

There's no sign of such a development to date.

European countries have done the split thing for quite a while. This is Movistar's offering in Spain:
http://www.movistar.es/particulares/...rosProductos-2

Through Movistar I currently get basic TV package, 50MB Internet (guaranteed speed up and down), landline with free national calls, and TWO mobiles with combined 4GB data and 200 min calls all for €25 per month. I could have had 300MB (same speed up and down) for €31 no point as 50MB was ample for our needs. It was an offer when I signed up - the same offer at the moment is €55 (about £47) which is still fantastic compared to UK but they do put deals on every now and then at cheaper prices.

Worth adding that the contract is only for 3 months and when you have disconnected you can re-sign to the latest offer (you have to have disconnected though). The modem they supply is like a brick though!

The above is a good example of how much we are getting well and truly ripped off here in the UK.

Or is a good example of how badly the Spanish economy is performing (if you're a "brexiteer").

You can get similar value in the UK market if you shop around, or go with a bundled deal at the best rates from one supplier when you are a new customer for all the services.

Prices would be cheaper in £ if it wasn't for Brexit :)

The prices haven't changed much over the years, they've always been high, nothing to do with Brexit.

I meant the Spanish prices not the UK ones!
