Sky Sports for free?

I've been a virgin TV subscriber for several years, but have only occasionally paid for Sky sports, the last time was 7 months ago. I have just noticed that I can access all the Sky sports channels in SD, despite not being currently being subscribed. I can't get them in HD though. Is this standard now?

From email I received on Wed.
Quote:

Hello,

Get in there – we’ve specially handpicked you to enjoy Sky Sports at no extra cost, from today and for the next 6 weeks.

We’ve already added the Sky Sports channels to your line-up, so the only finger you’ll need to lift is the one that finds ‘sport’ on your Virgin TV box. You won’t be charged a penny to watch these extra channels, and if you don’t want the channels at the end of the 6 weeks, they’ll automatically come off your package.

No. I assume that would come if I had Sky Movies and the HD premium. I used to, but not at the moment.

I disagree that it doesn't matter. Yes it's understandable that Virgin try to attract new customers to different packages with incentives like this. However there is never a bonus for existing long term customers that are forking out £100+ per month such as your sky sports free for a month. Norm seems to be 2 or 3 price rises a year without any extra content for existing customers.

It could be a Sky driven promotion, they are the ones who would benefit from increased Sky Sports subscriptions which must surely be the thought behind this promotion.

Ok desperate times is probably OTT but clearly premium subs are now far more difficult to attract. Both family members and friends have all said they constantly have Sky Sports and Sky Cinema half price offers now even offering up to 9/12 months.

Its certainly a very competitive marketplace and that is no bad thing for us consumers.

I think all these offers are out there because they are desperate!

As I say desperate may be a little OTT from me and discounting isn't something exclusive to Sky I've been rung probably 4 times since leaving BT likewise many on here who've left VM claim to have received healthy discounts to stay from a callback.

As Den says it's a competitive market making it more challenging for all the traditional pay providers.

nomadking 16-01-2017 18:46

Re: Sky Sports for free?

So who would Sky Sports be competing with, over the Sky Sports channels? Won't cost Sky that much to give it out for free for a period of time as they already "own" the content.

The point being made is that the whole thing is now getting too expensive for many , the entry price for Sky Sports requires you to also have a base TV package unless you are happy with Now TV.

Sky Sports isn't the only player in town now BT has a pretty decent offering sure it has less key sporting rights than Sky but then it can be had included with your package on both VM and the BT TV platform.

If what I'm trying to say is incorrect and everything with Sky Sports subscriptions is hunky dory explain why Sky are having to offer so many freebies and half price discounts for periods of 9 and 12 months something they've never had to do before.

I'm not suggesting Sky can't afford to discount but they clearly have to now to tempt people to subscribe.

Sorry thought you were referring to VM subs. I agree with you, Sky's cash cow isn't so reliable as a revenue stream any more.

I wonder if the powers that be can see from my Tivo box that I watch Sky Sports News a lot. Also about a year ago I had SS for 30 days over Christmas and New Year.
Anyway Thanks, I just hope this is a free lunch full stop.:D

I'm gobsmacked by this offer from Virgin, really am, so in effect people like me and thousands of others who pay through the nose for the sports pack, are basically subsidising others who don't have it, and Virgin are dressing this up as a sweetener to entice new customers into taking the Sky sports pack, unbelievable!

For the record I had SKY for years with VM before I dropped it because of cost. I recently had multiple offers from Now TV for their sports pack so I think it is completely a marketing drive from SKY themselves through VM!

I suppose they are giving this offer to customers who are on the highest bundle that does not include SKY Sports!

If it's any consolation, I'm unlikely to make use of this offer. For example me and my boys will be taking in some delightful Scottish Cup action this weekend, watching Stenhousemuir get pumped at McDiarmid.

But whoever has been the brains behind this offer (let's be honest it'll be Sky) really should have thought about their existing customers as well. They are maybe relying a bit too much on people retaining Sky Sports without stopping to think about it.

Not sure it's that, I'm only on the Mix bundle. But I have subscribed to Sky Sports in the past (we're talking about maybe 4 years or so ago) so perhaps this is a drive to win back previous subscribers.

Mine was greyed out too, so I did this (from VM Help site: Missing Channels)...

Press Home on your remote
Select Help & Settings
Select Help
Select TV Care from the top bar
Select Missing channels
Select Refresh my channel list to check for missing channels, and to get your TiVo box automatically updated if they are missing.

...and they showed up.

As a broad rule of thumb... premium channels can all be cancelled anytime with 30days notice.

However - if you get premium channels bundled into your package to get a discounted price, then cancelling any part of that package does run the risk of losing any or all discounts.

VM-staffers on here can probably confirm better..

Not being VM staff myself l think you are probably right as we have our premium channels at a discount price bundled into our package and the contract stipulates 12 months at the very least or you are quite likely of losing those discounts if one is thinking of cancelling within a bundled premium channel package.
