Road repairs - shameful Tories at it again!!!

Well those evil Tories I don't hate are at it again. This time they are resurfacing the busy road outside where I live and it's about time too!!!! Not only that but they are doing it in the night so none of us who work work nights like me will be able to sleep when we're not at home. These people make me sick they don't care about the working man who has to use his car to get to work. Now I am going to have to use a terrible new road to cycle to my 31 jobs. They never do this in rich places do they!!! No they come to poor places like where I live and force us to have the new roads in the night instead of during the day when the roads are busier. Boris makes me sick!!! If he ever used a bike he'd know what it's like to cycle on a brand new road.

You missed out Maggie and that when you had a job working for the council doing road repairs you would have done it better :)

A pot hole caused near £700 worth of damage to my front suspension.

I didn't bother going to my council as they rarely budge from not paying out.

They're pretty prompt around here fixing potholes. They did resurface our road, the full deal of grinding off a couple of inches and then a new layer of blacktop and that was great until the gas people came round a few weeks later and dug it all up replacing the mains. Talk about joined up thinking. Not.

Our Tories are pretty good: No tax rise for 5 years and we still get weekly bin emptying.

For £700 I'd have made the effort. It would have cost nothing to pursue would it?

I had spoken to my sister who works in a Solicitors, and she said that it was a pointless task.

Local authorities can't just refuse to pay out where there's sufficient evidence that they've been negligent in their repair inspections/schedules:

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/pothole-claims

Their first line of defence is likely to be denying liability, however, and small claims court action may be required.

I don't complain that much abut the Tories - l hate them.

In regards to local authorities. I can tell you something abut our local Council - Hounslow.

Many years go, when l mum was alive. Outside there huse was pavements so bad, that they were complain for months. We had proof of letters, and emails.

My mum went outside, didn't see the pavement was bad, slipped over and broke her arm. My brother reported it to the Council - it got repaired - THE SAME DAY.

The solicitor took photos. BUT, as there was no PHOTO evidence of the paving BEFORE. No one could be sued.

Not only that - WHY DO WE PAY ROAD TAX FOR. Answers on reply please

Re: Road repairs - shameful Tories at it again!!!

What makes me laugh about Hounslow Council is that they have a lovely Centre, near the Town Centre.

And have bought land about half a mile up the road, and plan to build a New Centre. So. l wonder who they will sell the land to. And make a massive profit.

But they will still say they have to make cuts in Social Care etc etc

Re: Road repairs - shameful Tories at it again!!!

Yeah, maybe there'd be more money for social care n Hounslow if they made a fat loss on the deal eh?

There's no such thing as road tax Arthur; that's a term from ye olden days. Road repairs are funded from general taxation. Some vehicle owners do pay vehicle excise duty which you may think is a road tax but it is for vehicle emissions (VED - Vehicle Excise Duty).

It is often demanded that cyclists should pay road tax and most already do from general taxation. The emissions that cyclists make are not of the same toxic type that come from vehicle exhausts and farting, to date anyway, is not taxed whether you're in a car, on a bike or typing on a forum *parp*. Oops excuse me .

Haven't read the whole thread but are we talking about road works?

Because they've got very annoying. The Tories implemented a policy whereby companies had to pay for the time they took causing them to do it quickly didn't they? Have they removed it? Recently I have noticed road works which last longer and never seem to have anyone actually working on them! One very busy road near me on the outskirts of the M25 has had roadworks causing long backups and there hasn't been anyone there all weekend. The works have sat there unmanned for at least two days causing chaos. It's absurd.
