50MB - Intermittent Fault
Hi,
I have a intermittent fault which comes and goes. The problem is the upstream power level on both upstreams goes to 54dBmV, between Tuesday and Friday the power levels were very stable. What could be the cause of the fault I am getting? I get the exact same problem with the TiVo box, which means on demand, YouTube, BBC iPlayer does not work, the picture and sound never breaks up when the fault occurs. By the way, the downstream power level and SNR are stable when the uptream power level goes to 54dBmV. You will likely see T3 and/or T4 timeouts (disconnections on the upstream) in your network log as well when this happens, though it is not guaranteed. The modem may stay online at that power level. ---------- Post added at 05:43 ---------- Previous post was at 05:37 ---------- Quote:

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post.
How do you pin point the cause of this fault? I have a technician coming out in a few days from Virgin Media, knowing my luck when the technician arrives, all the power levels will be stable. Quote:

Re: 50MB - Intermittent Fault
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post.
I seen a technician in the street during the week, I told him my problem and showed him my power levels and he showed me inside my cabinet and he moved me to another tap as he said they needed boosting. I did say to him is it possible it could be the amp he said if it was the amp lots of customers from around my area would be ringing in saying there Broadband and TV are not working. Quote:
---------- Post added at 08:33 ---------- Previous post was at 08:30 ---------- By the way, from what I seen the cab it looked ok. I was directly connected to the tap, like all the other customers. I have heard on here some customers are sharing taps with splitters involved, which is classed as a oversubscribed cab. |
Re: 50MB - Intermittent Fault
Moving your tap point will bring your power levels back in spec for now but if there is noise on the network which gets fixed this week then your newly lowered tap point (depending on how low they have out you) may now take your power levels out of spec. The tech is correct in saying that if there was a problem a lot of customers would be ringing up complaining but they only know there is a problem when a tonne of calls get logged, it is circular reasoning. It takes a tech to come out to two or three of the same jobs in the same area to notice the fault and then he escalates it to networks to get fixed. Unfortunately not everyone is tech savvy and looks at their power levels to see what is wrong so these things don't always get picked up immediately.

Re: 50MB - Intermittent Fault
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post.
My power levels before they got boosted were on the downstream -4 to -6 and on the upstream 51 to 53. I was on the second tap to the bottom of the cab. I am now on the third tap down from the top. My cab has from when I had a quick look between 6-9 rows of blocks of 6-8 taps I think. From looking at cab pictures on the Internet, before I saw inside mine, I thought they were all the same like 15, 18, 22 and 29 taps. What do you think the technician will do to try and fix this intermittent fault? Like I have said knowing my luck, when the technician comes out everything will be stable. Quote:

Re: 50MB - Intermittent Fault
I don't think it's anything to do with noise. Is it happening mainly during the day?

Re: 50MB - Intermittent Fault
Your upstream seems to constantly be around the 43 mark which is fine, has your issue gone away now or is the upstream fluctuating?

[img][/img] [img][/img] [img][/img] [img][/img] Don't have a lot of time to post. Just looking at the BQM's the issue on the 16th between 1am and 10:30am definitely looks to me like an SNR fault. As does the period between 8pm and midnight, plus 3-6am on the 17th. NOT a peak-time only issue. NOT an afternoon issue caused by over-heating cabinet. Seems to be random with plenty of packet loss on the BQM's at times that haven't been recorded. SNR fault's are known to be intermittent and random. |

Any idea how this would get fixed? I have technician coming out tomorrow. I don't want to be fobbed off saying everything is within spec. |

Re: 50MB - Intermittent Fault
How did the tech visit go yesterday?
Quote:
Just try to make the tech aware of the extent of the issues you're having with SNR (e.g. modulations changing) and power level problems on the upstream. There's not a lot else you can do. You may need to go through a couple of tech's before things get escalated. Like the General said, escalation can take time and a certain critical mass of customers complaining. Assuming other people are affected and not just you. I often take the view with SNR fault's that reporting it then sitting back and let other people do the moaning can be the easier option. Quote:
It may not be something they can do anything about anyway; Regular tech's can only deal with things from the hub to the local cabinet. If it's further upstream then a network tech/engineer will need to be called in. At this stage you don't know where the issue lies. |

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post.
The technician changed the splitter and isolator and also put new connectors at the end of the cables. For the past few weeks it has been stable. So I am guessing the splitter or isolator was the cause of the problem. How do these power levels look below? Downstream is a little high but if it's not giving grief I wouldn't worry about it. I didn't think it was a network SNR fault (I used to be a VM network engineer). Seems like it was like you said a faulty splitter/Iso or maybe a bit of braiding around the "stinger" on the cable. If you get anymore grief first thing to try would be a 6db wideband attenuator to get your levels closer to spec, but upstream levels are much more important than downstream (for stability). |
