Free speed upgrade

I logged in to my account for the first time in ages and it tells me the upgrade from 152 to 200 is ready and i need to click a few buttons to activate it,

I am just curious to know if it starts a new contract in doing so.

No new contract, no change in price.

Confirmed. But beware that if you change your package then you may lose the free upgrade speed.

BenMcr 28-07-2016 18:08

Re: free speed upgrade

That only applies to the 70Mb and 150Mb increases which aren't available in current bundles.

200Mb is an available tier for new customers so existing customers that get the speed upgrade to it shouldn't then lose it - unless they specifically choose a lower tier

I just got an email telling me I can sign into my virginmedia account to get a free speed upgrade but I don't recall having an internet account so what am I supposed to do?

Yes, I've had it since NTL days but never used an internet account for my dealings with them or VM.

Re: free speed upgrade

Sorry, confused by what you mean by "internet account".

Go to the my virgin media page and follow the on screen instructions for setting one up.

BenMcr 04-08-2016 13:50

Re: free speed upgrade

It is always possible that one was created that no longer works (due it not being used).

If that is case that Technical Support would be able to help resolve this, as the online username and / or password rest options normally need a security profile to be set up.

So am I as I haven't got one. :) So do I have to create one to get the speed increase because frankly, I don't really want another online account to worry about if I don't have to. In the past I've had free speed upgrades and never been asked to do that.

BenMcr 04-08-2016 14:42

Re: free speed upgrade

The last few speed increases have asked you to sign into My Virgin Media to opt into them.

Are you not on ebilling - it's the same place.

heero_yuy 04-08-2016 17:23

Re: free speed upgrade

I thought the account was there almost by default. The login being your default email address that VM gave you and the same password IIRC.

General Maximus 04-08-2016 17:27

Re: free speed upgrade

it might be there but you defo have to activate it/sign up for it. He won't be able to sign in willy nilly, even though he has an email address and password for the account, the two need to come together and I think there are some other option which need specifying as well.

I'm sure you're right Mon General, Sir. I can't remember how I set it up. Was a long time ago.

General Maximus 04-08-2016 17:43

Re: free speed upgrade

Me too, all I can remember is getting a letter from VM about it so I went to sign in with email and account password and it knew it was a first time sign in and went through what you can do and gave you a tour and asked you to set some preferences.

Osem 05-08-2016 15:36

Hi guys and thanks. If it's connected to our original NTL email address then yes I still have that and the password. I'll try logging in later and see what happens.

It isn't my hardware, it's prob the box on the street that hasn't had a door for months, next door has the same problem.

Seconded (thirded?) - it's your hardware. You've got a piece of equipment (router/cable/network card) limited to 100Mbit, I guarantee it.

We have 100mbs internet with Virgin. I saw the offer for an upgrade on my Virginmedia for an upgrade to 150mbs but it was clear whether this was a free upgrade. Rang 150 and asked and they confirmed the upgrade was free apart from the cost of of posting a new router at £5.99. I've ordered and the router should be posted out for Momay next week. Great,

Welcome to the forum. Make sure that the rest of your kit is capable of the higher speeds. Many older PCs etc only have 100T cards.

Nice to see Virgin or on the ball. I had an email on Tuesday telling me that I finally have my free upgrade from 152 to 200. Funny that as I have already had it now for nearly six months.

Hey,

I just got an e-mail too asking me to claim my free upgrade from 100Mb to 152Mb. So there's no strings attached with doing this? i.e. my price won't go up and I won't be tied into a new contract? I know in the past there's always been a hidden surprise, such as the price of my bill going up at the start of the year...

Thanks!

Totally free no strings attached. Be aware that if you subsequently change any part of your package you loose this freebee and go back to 100.

Is this information available from Virgin Media anywhere? i.e. on their website

Thanks :)

Yes I just got one to-day and have also had the upgrade for for about the same time.

It is right there on my VM when you click the button to get the speed upgrade.

Re: free speed upgrade

Turns out the e-mail wasn't supposed to be intended for me. Clicking on the link in the e-mail takes me to My Virgin Media, where I get a message saying: "Your speed boost is complete! Your connection speed is now up to 100Mbps."

I guess there's no such thing as a free lunch...

I have just taken the free upgrade from 152Mb to 200Mb, yesterday the router arrived, a secondhand SH 2ac with what looked like the remains of someones dinner on it, cleaned it up, activated it, got it got it all up and running OK no issues, then I noticed a tag on the power supply unit which says "Only to be used with Superhub 2 VMDG 485" as the SH 2ac is VMDG 490 is this OK? it's working fine at the moment.
Thanks

Dave

Re: free speed upgrade

I also received a Hub 2, installed it OK, then found it was only giving low speeds of 50 to 90 Mbps on Ethernet but wireless was 140Mbps.
when they sent an engineer out to check it according to him it was showing 193 every time he tried it on wireless and he thought that a 1Gig card in the PC would only give 100Mbps.
He would not believe me that was was not correct and he rang someone who confirmed that I was correct.
He supposedly escalated it, waited a few days and no sign of another engineer so rang 151 and got to someone who knew they were doing and sent a hub3 out to me which, when installed all worked as it should and now getting reasonable speeds on both wireless & Ethernet.
At 6.00am this morning I was getting 203Mbps unfortunately just checked at 11.30am and it looks as if everyone and his dog is on it and only clocked 35Mbps.
Looks like another call is on the cards.

I've done the free upgrade to 200Mbps , is the upload supposed to increase too? mine is still on 10Mbps , same as I've been getting since i was on 100Mbps

Your configuration file should look like this

Dave is correct. There is a difference between what you are provisioned for and what you will achieve with a speed test. Have a look at your config.

Re: free speed upgrade

Well I had the email on Saturday saying my free speed increase to 200mb was ready and that seeing has I had all the equipment I just needed to log in to my virginmedia, so I did and completed the 'free order'.
4 days later my SH2 router config is still showing 152mb, so given VM's record I might have it for Christmas.

Have you tried rebooting your Superhub?

DaMac 18-08-2016 11:45

Re: free speed upgrade

Yes I have mate, will try again when I get home.
Just to add since I sent the request I have had 4 missed sales calls from VM, would not put it past them 'withholding' it till they have tried to talk me into a TiVo (and subsequently a new contract).

 that is exactly how companies operate and VM are no different, in fact they are one of the most annoying sales driven companies I have ever encountered, the amount of sales calls I get of them is annoying, I don't answer any of their numbers.
As it is, 1 week on after completing the request and me with the correct equipment still hasn't had the increase, I'll try another modem reboot just to see.....
Nope, still 152.

That is not how Virgin operates. Their sales folk have no way to "withhold" anything from you.

I am currently on the big bang bundle. Paying 64.48 per month. If I click to upgrade broadband I can see that vivid 200 is available, and the cost is a extra 51.64 per month. Surely this is wrong ?

He mate listen once you make a change from a bundle sometimes it takes you to the normal non bundle non discount price. To get the best price you do need to call virgin customer service to get the right price for you

First the big bang price with line rental is currently £52 that includes line rental

You can get the 200mb for less than you pay now or get XL pack and 200 mb for £74

Re: Free speed upgrade

Well I still haven't had my upgrade, rather curiously I have logged into my virginmedia.com today and the option to order the speed increase had reappeared, so I have gone through the process of ordering it again and have now received yet another order confirmation e-mail, I'm still hopeful for Christmas, although this is Virgin Media, I certainly wouldn't go to a party at a brewery with them.
