Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
http://news.sky.com/story/1716977/se...-highly-likely
I had great admiration for Nicola Sturgeon, as a lead of a Party in Scotland. But, l feel that she is now being like a spoilt child that has had her dummy taken from her. She is preparing for a Referendum, for Scotland to become free from London be prt of Europe. Doesn't she realise that this will benefit Scotland as well and the people of Scotland have already spoken of there desire. Yes, almost all of Scotland voted to remain. Don't she realise how close the vote was. I have watched news report of what the people think of the Nicola's thinking. And most of them don't want another vote. Just think there are many things Scotland get free, whereas London don't. Are we complaining. NO. Things wont change, prices will go up and then they will stabilise. The biggest thing I that we wont have to pay that large sum of money to Europe each week. And we only get a quarter of that back. The United Kingdom, which is ENGLAND, IRELAND, SCOTLAND and WALES will still trade with Europe. And we will still trade with each other. Its not as if all phone lines to Europe will all end. Most of the public spoken too, today, said that its a great day for BRITAIN. This ALL the countries above. but someone said today about football. Will we be able to buy Foreign Players. This is how pathetic its is. We also had Ryanair, saying they might have to put fares - not being funny, l wouldn't fly Ryan Air if they offered FREE flights WORST airline going. A company on LBC radio said today, that thy deal with Germany, and are concerned due to the result. They might have to lay off staff. Total rubbish. Companies will still trade. Its not the end of the world |

If we can't get a decent deal jobs will be lost. We will still trade, but will be less competitive selling into Europe and, hence, lose jobs. Sturgeon is merely sticking to the SNP's manifesto. Nothing to do with spitting out the dummy. Had she not issued a statement informing that a referendum was 'on the table' she'd have been roundly criticised for not doing so, and quite rightly. Prices may go up and then for sure will stabilise. I'm sure the people who don't have a huge amount of disposable income, yourself included, would be just fine with prices being unaffordable as long as they are stable, right? |
re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
Yes, but leaving the EU. Should not effect trading. All its is at the moment is scare munging. Even Major companies are now saying it could effect us.
Britain, UK or whatever you call it. wont effect the trading standards of this country. We will still trade with other countries no matter what |

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
Would Parliament give them a binding vote again? If they do I think Scotland leaves. The only issue is how do they get back into the EU? What do they do about currency?
Worst case scenario for us is they become the accessor state. Basically Scotland retains our membership. Not sure how feasible that is. If the EU wanted to make it happen though they would find a way. |

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'

My hope is that Sturgeon doesn't have the appetite for the risk involved. If they have this vote now and they lose, independence is over for a long time. There are still problems facing Scottish Independence, questions over how a retained EU membership for Scotland would work and of course the price of oil. So it's not 100% they'll win although I think they probably will. A lot of it probably depends on if the EU give Scotland any indication they'll stay. If the EU really wanted to screw us then they would offer Scotland our terms (minus keeping the pound I guess) and they would give her encouragement to run with it. As you've said though there are a lot of switchers now. If that support is sustained it's curtains for the UK. |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
While I do want to stay in the EU I would still vote no to Independence.
I simply do not trust the SNP to govern the country properly. They simply don't live in the real world. |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
Yes we should wait and see. Emotions are high right now so it's hard to get a precise picture.
|
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
When the dust settles, Brexit is likely to work against Scottish independence IMO. Sturgeon worded her statement very carefully as she always does, tub thumping for the true believers in the gallery while leaving herself maximum wriggle room.
The primary trigger for a referendum is not Brexit, it is sustained poll readings telling her she can win. No matter what else happens, she won't call it until she's sure of that. |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
The SNP NEED EU membership to be able to get enough money in to balance the books.
This is why they are running scared now. But even if they had voted for Independence, the EU has told them, in no uncertain terms, that the membership process would be started from Square One. And that process takes many years. |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
They could end up in the worst position of no EU money, no English money and having to have their own currency.

Hell of a risk, they run a great chance of being a 3rd world country inside 30 years - still if that's what they want, I won't be stopping them. |

We do not all want to leave the United Kingdom , this annoys me when we get a comment saying" Let them go" I love being part of Britain and want to stay like this, But Nicola and her hunt to go down in history as the one to break us up, just like Salmond, really gets me angry. She should be trying to make the U K stronger and work together for us all. I have family living in London and we should all be as one,. I am not a hateful person but I hate the S N P for their search for power,
|
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
IF Scotland DO get their second referendum so soon after the last one and choose to leave, they won't be a part of the EU, they'd be pushed to the back of the queue, AND when their oil runs out in a few years, they'll be begging to come back to the UK.
Don't get me started on how it seems OKAY for Scotland to have a national party, but it's somehow "racist" for England to have one |

Whilst I don't think another independence is a guaranteed win for the snp and as much as I like the Scottish friends I have I have no desire to go through another hateful campaign which is what we will get and if Scotland does get another independence referendum then the rest of the uk should get one as well asking if we want Scotland as part of the union anymore. This is just not going to stop the snp will jump on any excuse to go for it and continually create more Ill will on both sides of the border.
|
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
I think we need to take the threat seriously. We almost got burnt last time by underestimating the support for independence and this time the message will be far more potent. Serious Unionists from last time are currently supportive of the idea at the moment.

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
Yes this "stole our future" is popping up more and more but as the figures show the majority weren't that bothered about their future to take half an hour to vote for their future. In the past on this forum I've defended the younger generations when they have been accused of not working hard enough and so on but this time I'm sorry but they are sounding like entitled brats who are having a hissy fit because they didn't get what they want. That's not even touching the insult of us older people not giving a thought to the futures of our kids and grandkids which is completely ridiculous.
Vote was done leave won and it isn't going to be ignored or reversed so it's time to get behind the country or go off and sulk quietly but give the whining a rest. |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
First set of post-Brexit polls but support for Scottish Independence at 59%. Probably indicating some of the difficulty the SNP will have as that number is likely to come down. The question is what continues to happen in the aftermath and if Sturgeon gets any suggestion from the EU that they could stay.
If she got assurances Scotland would be admitted under the UK terms and gave notice of her intention to call a referendum upon the triggering of Article 50 then things could get interesting. |

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'

On the EU and currency issues, it could go two ways: 1. Scotland votes to leave the UK and Scotland becomes a independent nation. Under this scenario, Scotland would have to negotiate to join the EU from scratch. Until then they would use the pound but I doubt the Bank of England would underwrite that.... so could get very messy. And besides, Spain has already indicated it would veto any attempt by Scotland to join the EU as its worried about its own backyard and regions breaking away. 2. The UK (as a whole) agrees to split into two parts, like Czechoslovakia did. Scotland being one part and the rest of the UK being the other part. Under this scenario, as the old UK was still in the EU, Scotland would state that they wished to remain in the EU. Whether the rest of the UK agrees to this is another matter entirely. How amenable England would be to Scotland in the event of a breakup of the UK is key? Zero, I think. They would have to adopt the euro as again the BoE would not underwrite Scottish debt. ---------- Post added at 02:20 ---------- Previous post was at 02:16 ---------- Quote:

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
Isn't this all hot air? I have not heard of any existing legal statute that can be used to force a second Scottish vote.
If there isn't a case in law and since the law for such an instrument is made in Westminster then this is all pointless, right? Scotland may want to stay in the EU and may want to leave the UK but wanting and getting are two different things. |

There was talk that Scotland could survive on the revenue from North Sea oil. There ONLY income l believe. Nicola, is in dreamland as far as l am concerned. I am married to a Scot. I do work for some Scots, and wont accept Scottish currency. As some shops wont accept Irish money either The Scottish people, and they are brilliant. I have always thought of the Scots as my people, because they were. Now, I don't. I think they're foreign, alien thinking to us and I hope they all **** off. Salmond wins. Bring on the wall....! |

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
The snp have jumped on the referendum as a good excuse for their long-term aim and why not it's not like they are the only one's making good use of the referendum. I think the problem is that sturgeon mistakes remaining in the EU meaning happy to leave the UK and I'm not convinced that's the case and neither fully does she or she'd have gone for it straight away. She will wait for a few polls to roll in saying their is a majority for independence then she will jump regardless of other aspects. Of course the other problem is how much faith do you really want to put into polls given their modern track record :erm:.
I would still support a non binding referendum for the rest of the UK if there is another Scottish independence referendum as the issue affects all of the UK and everyone should have a voice. |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
Makes me laugh with all this racist card thrown about but nobody has mentioned Scotland how many % voted out to leave England. So does that mean sturgeon and the out voters are all Racist as well. None of this was covered on the news was it?
|
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
Quote:
The racist card really has lost its impact due to none racists being branded racist. But some still feel racisim is away to be heard or express how they feel. If there is a large amount of hate or racism within British community's then we need to work with these community's and understand why they feel racism is the only way they can be heard. We can then put the time and money, resources , education and people to these community's to see positive action. Shouting LOCK UP THE RACIST is not helping anyone, we need to ask and understand why some people are racist, then offer them the help and understanding they need. |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
But it makes a mockery of the whole referendum how our country can be held to ransom now by over inflated news reports of Racism and foreigners living in the country that want to play on the Racist card just to keep the country in the EU.
Setting aside all the crap the GOV is causing at the min. but you could use the same card on Scotlanders wanting to VOTE out of England you could use the Racist card their against the English. You are right though There isn't enough education on it. |

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
At the moment Scotland get cash from the UK Government. And l agree with Stephen.
But, Sturgeon was relying on Oil, to bring in the cash. Well if they want to remain part of EU. Most of that cash they earn from Oil, will be swallowed up by the EU. And if l am not wrong, the Scots, get a load of stuff FREE, compared to the UK. This will all go out the window. Apart from Oil, where else do they get money from ? And everyone thinks that trade will stop with other countries - l think they are wrong. We are one of the richest countries going. When the result came out, the markets fell. But Boris said that the markets haad now steadied. And everything was now fine |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
Spain has torpedoed any chance of Scotland negotiating a place in the EU while the UK negotiates to leave.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan...itics-36656980 If Sturgeon wants Scotland in the EU, she will have to win a referendum, wait for the UK to complete Brexit, then start negotiations to join. Which will take quite a long time. |

The Spanish were never going to just let Scotland slide in and if sturgeon didn't realise that then the people of Scotland need to think about her competence. What's clear is the SNP is not going to stop until they get what they want and will exploit any situation to get it no matter the consequences for Scotland. I have a feeling that in any future independence referendum Scots will look back on the EU referendum as a bastion of truth compared to what they will have to endure.

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
OK, I give up. I have asked this before but surely Nicola can huff & puff as much as she likes but unless Westminster votes in new legislation for a new Scottish referendum, nothing can happen, right?
Isn't this Much Ado About Nothing? |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
It's unlikely she could even introduce legislation for a referendum without legislation first being passed at Westminster. The presiding officer of the Scottish Parliament is legally obliged to reject a bill that is outside the competence of the parliament.
The real question is, the circumstances under which a Tory government would consider it less damaging to refuse to agree to a referendum than to allow it and risk losing. |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
Nothing can be done until after we leave the EU.
The government will not grant another referendum before as it would hinder our exit negotiations. Scotland cannot apply for any kind of membership as they are not a sovereign nation, and it would be blocked by Spain and Belgium at a minimum. Post EU exit a referendum could be granted but that would leave Scotland outside the UK and the EU. They could apply for membership of the EU but they would have to accept everything that consists of. |
Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
She ain't going to be happy, it's a good reminder that no one gets everything they want - even if they think they can, even if they stamp their feet, even if they say it very LOUDLY.

Re: Second Scotland Referendum 'Highly Likely'
Trouble is Nash she sees it as her primary role to make Scotland independent and in the past had no problem with out and out lies and misinformation that made the EU referendum campaigns look like total honesty. As usual I think the SNP are seeing more into something then is actually there and the majority for remaining in the EU doesn't automatically translate into want to leave the UK. She will be busy in the coming months trying to figure that out and will jump at the first sign she thinks gives them the vote irrespective of the fact that uncertainty on that does Scotland no favours.
I've always got the feeling listening to a few SNP people over the years that they would be happy for Scotland to burn to the ground as long as it was independent at the time very single minded people with less of a care to the damage done. |

Despite what some thought she clearly has her own vision for the future and has no problem shaking things up to get there I do believe also that if any deal with the EU is not in the interests of the UK she will just decline and go on another path.
