Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

As you are probably aware a new Star Trek tv series is going to start in January 2017 and we are currently discussing it in this thread. Everybody has different tastes and whilst the new films have proven to be popular, I personally prefer the themes of the TNG movies and I am hoping that the "Star Trek-ness" is going to be reflected in the new series as well.
Each of the previous series has it's pro's and cons; I love the TNG crew, I love the war with the Dominion and Sisko having to walk the line in terms of doing the right thing and obeying orders/rules and I love Voyager for the science, the ship and the Borg. What is your favourite?

TNG for me... but only just ,Voyager was good but pipped at the post by TNG because Patrick Stewart is more watchable than Kate Mulgrew who was just bloody irritating

I agree, Patrick Stewart is the best captain by miles.

Yes, picard was the best.

There was a time when TNG/Voyager & DS9 all overlapped and were on TV at the same time, I think anything in the same Universe can get used too much and become stale if milked to excess.

well the good news is that it has been 10 years since we have had any new Star Trek to watch so I am hyped for this. I just hope they stick to 20-26 episode seasons and don't do anything gay like 12 episodes. I love GoT and it sets the bar for quality but you just get in to it and realise that it is episode 10 and the season has finished.

Particle Of The Week (Voyager) had its moments, but for me, you can't beat TNG. It really got going from mid season 2 IMO, and got better and better throughout. NexGen effectively validates the genius of the original idea, because it was, from launch, a continuation of it. The flaws in DS9 (too static) Voyager (too isolated ... exactly how many shuttles does an Intrepid class starship carry?) and Enterprise (not enough tech, especially in the early seasons. Transporters were an inspired idea in the original series, for good reasons) are all, to a greater or lesser extent, caused by deviating from one or more of the plot devices that made TOS and TNG so flexible.

Having said that, I've watched every episode of every series, often several times over, so they're not all that bad. :D

Well it was a close call between TNG and DSN but in the end it has to be DSN.

I think the animated series is also worth a mention - it wasn't bad at all.

Once it got going DSN was good, but overall I think TNG.

Another vote for TNG. I remember when it started and I hated it, but I was soon buying the VHS tapes soon enough.

I never thought I'd warm to DS9 as it definitely had a different vibe to it than the rest of the Trek universe. But I find watching old episodes of different Trek series' and its DS9 that seems to stand the test of time the best for me.

For me it's a close call between TNG and Voyager.

I was just turning 16 when Voyager started and I just remember being wowed by it. Was the first fully cg series as well I think as didnt use models from the start.

I did enjoy the earlier DS9 series but was bored by the end.

I voted DS9, but only really from S4. Other than that, I would then say VOY, TOS, TNG - although TNG did have some outstanding episodes.

Re: Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

TOS, often imitated never bettered.

When I was growing up it was always Star Trek over Dr Who (which I still don't really watch to this day). As dilli says - the animated series was good too. Thinking about it I've enjoyed all the TV series but can't say I've been that impressed with the last couple of films.

Cheers

me too dude, I remember watching the pilot and watching in awe as the nacelles folded in to create a stable field and they went to wrap.

Voyager.

If I was forced to pick, I'd say TNG. However, all the shows had good and bad points. Most of season one of TNG is fairly forgettable, although if you can find them, Wil Wheaton's reviews of this season are funny. They are also occasionally rude, hence me not providing a link.

Voyger no 1 with me sad about the ending which was rushed a bit.

Re: Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

funnily enough I watched it yesterday. I can remember watching it 15 years ago when I was at uni and showing all my friends the scene when they deploy the ablative hull armour. I loved it then and I still love it now.

This is why I wish they would make a new ST series based on a time ship like the Relativity. It would give them chance to dedicate episodes to minor stories which can fill gaps but at the same time give us more depth and insight into the behind the scenes goings on so to speak about the ship and characters lives. If we were to speculate about Voyager returning home the first thing you would ask yourself is what would happen to the crew. Do they stay together for another year to wind down and assimilate (pardon the pun) themselves back into society or are they all split up immediately and given separate missions and assignments? What happens to the Doctor? Does Starfleet and the Federation respect his rights as an individual and allow him to pursue his medical career and take advantage of his knowledge or do they see him as a hologram and take him offline so they can dissect his mobile emitter in an attempt to duplicate the technology? Are the marquis given pardons or are they held accountable for their previous crimes? What happens with Seven and does she go on a soul hunting exercise and discover nature and what it means to be human or does she join the crew of a science vessel?

These are all things which you wonder about going through the series and I loved how they sort of tied that up at the beginning to give you some resolution before they undid it all. They did the same thing with DS9 which I really liked. I hate open endings and when you have spent years with the characters and come to know them and respect them it is nice to see that things work out for them and they get a measure of peace and fulfilment in their lives after all they have suffered and been through.

Re: Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

The one thing they're not going to do when they make this new series is turn it into 23 hours of fan****. The most successful formula Star Trek has is the Five Year/Continuing Mission as shown in TOS and TNG. Weekly episodes, each presenting their own self contained story, with little to no reliance on a story arc. I believe CBS wants this to be a commercial success and therefore they're going to make it accessible.

I just hope they keep the science in it. I need them to realign the positron relays and use the deflector to generate an inverse tachyon field :)

Re: Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

While later series maybe better made and acted (especially Patrick Stewart) the TOS remains for me the best. Wobbly sets, terrible fisticuffs and knowing that non regular person in a red shirt in the early scenes was doomed.

Re: Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

I knew I had succeeded as a parent when one of my kids pointed at an incidental character in a TV show (not Star Trek) and said, "is he a redshirt?" :D

Then TOS

Then Voyager

DS9 - I never liked

Enterprise - Naff central.

That's one thing that I don't like about modern Sci Fi. Over reliance on the story arc.

As you say, they put the casual watcher off as (in terms of time) it becomes a major investment to watch a series you may or may not like. You can't just dip in with the odd episode and muddle your way through the series..

That's one thing I liked about TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. They had story arcs (particularly DS9), and while it did help if you knew the story arc, most stories contained enough that you could enjoy them without following every episode.

Modern Sci Fi seems to rely almost exclusively on the story arc, which I think is why it doesn't get great viewing figures.

Horizon 03-06-2016 14:49

Re: Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

I like the story arc carrying through an entire series, but yes, if you just want to dip in and out of a series, it makes it difficult.

The Stargate series' were similar to Star Trek in that respect. They had themes and stories that carried through the length of the entire series', but each episode was self contained, as was I suppose any other sci-fi series of the time.

Re: Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

I can understand the appeal of either. I absolutely love Stargate and at the same time i really enjoyed season 7 of ds9. By that point though you couldn't just watch one episode, story arc or not, you would need to know everything has happened in the run up to it (i.e the dominion and the current state of affairs in the alpha quadrant).

Everyone mocks Enterprise but i think the one thing they got right was the balance between individual eps and story arcs. I loved the 2 and 3 parters, it gives you time to cover a story more thoroughly.

Paul 03-06-2016 17:10

Re: Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

The problem with Enterprise was that it was to dull for to long, by the time it got a bit better people had given up on it in droves, and so its end was already a formality.

The Enterprise time war story arc was unremitting gonads. For me it utterly ruined the whole premise, which was to strip out a lot of the high tech of the earlier series.

Scott Bakula was the main problem, too high profile for another big sci-fi show. Every time I saw him on screen I was expecting Al to pop up smoking his cigar. And as for Trip, I wanted to flip.... every time I heard his voice I just thought I was in a episode of Dallas. I'm surprised he never wore a cowboy hat!

Re: Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

Good news, it sounds like we can look forward to the classic Star Trek we love with a new lick of paint. Rather than trying to completely reinvent the show they have got some of the old writers back:

"The new Star Trek series is sticking with the veterans. According to 1701 News, the upcoming CBS series will feature writers from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Heroes.

From showrunner Bryan Fuller, the new series is expected to premiere on the network’s streaming service, CBS All Access, in early 2017.

Former Next Generation story editor Joe Menosky has reportedly joined the new series’ writing team alongside Heroes writer Aron Coleite. Menosky also wrote on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.

Previously, we reported Star Trek: Voyager novelist Kirsten Beyer had joined the writing staff as well."

Re: Which is your most favourite Star Trek series?

I was hoping they was going to do something like this:

Star Trek will return to the big screen next month, and Star Trek Beyond will acknowledge the passing of Leonard Nimoy. He appeared in both of the new films as his character of Spock, and his death did have an impact on the cast of the film.
At a recent appearance, Justin Lin spoke about joining the popular science-fiction franchise and the way the film will handle the death of the older Spock. He said the following, according to Trek Core:

“It’s something you’ll see in the film. It obviously affected everybody, because he’s been a big part of our lives. There’s an attempt to acknowledge that in some way.”

He also admitted that Spock was one of his favorite characters and that helped pushed him to sign on for the project. He said:

“Bones is my favorite character, because I’ve always viewed him as the curmudgeonly uncle I never had. So it was fun to talk with Karl [Urban] about where McCoy is going and where he is right now. I almost feel like I’m making the biggest-budgeted fan film! We got to have Bones and Spock have the conversation I’ve always wanted them to have. I didn’t realize how much the franchise was a part of me until we played with putting characters in these different situations.

Sad news. Probably deserving of another thread but Anton Yelchin has died aged 27. Best known as Chekov in the New movies and Kyle Reese from Terminator Salvation.
