Netflix powered speed test

Hi i dont think this has been posted but if it has please feel free to delete this netflix has just introduced a new speed test it will only give you your download speed and not your upload speed.

Ive tested it a couple of time and it seems to be reliable it wont work if your using a smart dns your have to temporarily disable that.

I get 210Mbps every single time. Does seem consistent at least.

I can't get more than 120Mb out of it. Most tests I invariably get 210Mb.

Another exception is the Thinkbroadband speed test, which never gives me more than 110Mb. I know their test is wrong because Speedtest.net and TBB's file download test both get me >200Mb every time.

Has something changed with the TBB test? I always used to get >200Mb from them too.

I get full speed on this test like all others, works very well for me.

Re: Netflix powered speed test

Inconsistencies don't mean the test is poor, there could genuinely be congestion somewhere between yourself and netflix's servers.

Must be something about Netflix's network connection then, with congestion from some locations. Within the same time frame I tried speedtest.net, Uswitch speed test and file download methods. All gave me >200Mb.

The whole point of Netflix's test is so that you can test your connection to netflix, nothing else. That's why it's a really simple one and doesn't care about things like ping and jitter.

I'll give it a miss then. Just got 130Mb.

It's worth reminding people that there is no single speed test that trumps the others. If you're serious about testing your connection, you'll want to use a variety of methods and services.

After all, a lot of speedtest.net servers are actually hosted by Virgin on Virgin's core network. That's great if you want to make sure there's no local congestion, but tells you nothing about the state of Virgin's overall network congestion.

Remember not that long ago when people would max out speed tests regularly, but still get buffering and crap on Youtube? Same thing, except for netflix. If you're getting 210MB+ on speedtest.net but still get buffering on netflix, then who's at fault? The idea is that this test at least tells you what speeds you should be getting from netflix themselves.

Re: Netflix powered speed test

The Netflix test isn't there to massage the egos of avid speed testers, give them masturbation material or give them big numbers to paste to their mates to show how 1337 their connection is. It's there to give an idea of Netflix experience.

My own test opened connections to 2 servers at my ISP's Netflix Open Connect CDN, 2 servers in the Amazon Elastic Cloud's US West 2 instance, and 4 of Netflix's own London servers.

The numbers in an 8+ connection Ookla test hosted on a server on your ISP's own network, or a USwitch test using nearby Amazon EC and Akamai CDNs do not in any way reflect realistic conditions in use.

It's also worth mentioning that if you're serious about testing your connection and are doing it purely for the sake of it rather than because you perceive issues you really need a hobby as you make World of Warcraft players seem awesome. ;)

I would put forward that most of us "enthusiasts" on this forum could do with a better hobby ;)

Networks are a part of what makes me my money, and I've close connections with broadband in general so I'm all good. ;)

Speed testing for fun is about as fulfilling as masturbating with sand paper.

no hard feelings dude. I am the king of sarcasm and saw the funny side of it even though it was directed at me.
