Did anyone else get a trial invite?, i just got one from a mod on the virgin forum.

I am aware of NDA's but thankyou for letting me know.

I am sure this is actually correct as it has been done like that in the past.
So you better not mention anything else relating the trial, until Virgin actually state you are allowed too!

I am aware of how a non-disclosure agreement works. Merley asking if other people had been invited to a trial is not breaking any form of NDA.

No invitation for me but my wild guess is that this is a long awaited VOIP phone product. Something that will make use of the Telephone ports on the new Hub.

If they weren't intending to use these soon they would probably have hidden the related information in the VM version of the modem firmware

Re: Got invited for a trial

I saw something about Power lines being mentioned a while back which is quite a good thing for Virgin to get into as it's ok having this super fast broadband but a lot of equipment can't actually make use of that top speed.
Power lines (if specced appropriately) could be a way for customers to use that speed.

Wonder if it is that.

Didn't get an invite either, but I suspect the trials are for VOIP.
Not Powerline or Tivo.
That's my 2 pence worth anyway ... :)

It would make financial sense if VM could ditch supporting old analogue phone lines, when they have a nice cabled broadband supply already into the home.

It is. They want to trial powerline adapters. The things are useless and they should know this they've been told it enough times in the past, so I can't be bothered with it.

As for NDAs, that only applies to people they can enforce it upon, aka their staff.

The staff do all the trials, then when they're ready to release stuff they do a limited roll out first. They still call it a trial, but in effect its a roll out.

Yes there are some new people being added to the Powerline trial, but that's been going for 5 weeks now. You're late to the party!

There's another new trial which has started more recently.

Re: Got invited for a trial

Got one of these this morning :-
Hi there
We’d like to invite you to participate in a usability testing session for a new product we’re developing here at Virgin Media.
The session will take place in Hammersmith, London during office hours on Wednesday 25th May. Participants will be required for about an hour during the day. When applying, you can tell us whether you’d prefer to attend during the morning or afternoon, and we’ll schedule your session accordingly.
During the session, we’ll ask you to use the product to carry out some tasks, and tell us what you think of your experience. We’ll use your feedback to help us improve the product.
Participant requirements
To qualify, you’ll need to be:
• Able to come to Hammersmith on the day of the test
• A Virgin Media customer, registered with My Virgin Media (if you’re a customer and you’re not registered, you can do so at my.virginmedia.com)
• A smartphone user
• Happy to have your voice recorded during the session (we won’t share the recording outside the development team here at VM)
• Happy to sign a non-disclosure agreement (a standard legal doc promising not to reveal anything you’ve learned during the session to anyone else)
Other than that, no special experience is necessary.
What next?
If this sounds like you, go ahead and fill in the information form here: http://tinyurl.com/UTS2305. The closing date for applications is 5pm on Wednesday 18th May. We’ll let successful applicants know by the end of Thursday.
Thanks!

Unfortunately when I click on the link it tells me this :-

Unfortunately the survey closed on Monday May 16 2016 14:00 (GMT). Thank you for your interest.

Is this what people have been invited to? I couldn't have gone anyway as it's 200 miles away

I got one of those too, thought I was special :) Many many years ago when I lived in London I went to one of these research meetings for BT when they were launching residential ADSL for the first time. I remember being in a room with around 12 other people and being watched from behind a one-way screen by big-wigs and being filmed. would never do it again.

Anyway, I got an invite to a trial a couple of weeks ago but haven't heard anything back but I know it wasn't for powerline adapters.

Re: Got invited for a trial

Same as daveybm.

Even if they survey was still open I would not be attending because I too live 200 miles away!

Given the survey ended problem can you confirm this is a genuine VM email?

trickytree 18-05-2016 12:37

Re: Got invited for a trial

Got same email but as you say link is closed!

As it is 12:35 now and they supposedly close it at 17:00 not much time to respond if I wanted to anyway.
I was slightly tempted but a bit extreme for me to take a day off work for some 1 hour info session.
Also not sure of the address as to whether I could drive there from Nottingham without congestion charge or being able to park etc.

I've just been invited for an hour to test usability of a new VM website.

But it's in Hammersmith, London.

Surely they know I don't even live in England, let alone London?

Re: Got invited for a trial

The link seems to be working again now, but travel to London (taking time off work) to participate in a trial that benefits them without covering expenses seems a bit cheeky.

trickytree 18-05-2016 13:43

Re: Got invited for a trial

The email says Wed 25th but now the link is working it says Thur 26th....

I just wish there was more info as for an out of Londoner I need to know about parking or not and related to that the time. Just saying Morning or Afternoon is a big time frame.

Think I will end up applying and then I may not get accepted anyway but if I do hopefully then I get more info.

We’ve also moved the date of the sessions to give you more time to apply.

The new closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday 20th May.
We’ll let successful applicants know on Monday 23rd May.

Got the London email too. If they were offering travel I would have went. I have some time off work and it would have been something random in the middle of my time off. Not paying to get to London to test something for a company.

Sorry but I have to ask: why on earth would you make the journey from Nottingham to Hammersmith to spend an hour doing a usability test for VM?

They're going to be testing usability on a 'My VM' app, or perhaps a streaming media app.

Exactly.

For those people that live in West London and want a first look at, what I assume will be the new tivo, perhaps they may think its worth it. For everyone else, no way.

I suspect they won't, but companies do sometimes offer customers rewards for testing products. For instance I got a free copy of Windows Me (OK, that was a pile of crap, so wasn't much of a reward) and also a free copy of Windows XP x64 from Microsoft.

If a company is going to pay your expenses and you have nothing else pressing that needs done, why not? As someone else mentioned, you tend to get some goodies.

Quite possibly but was going to tie it in with a journey up the apples and pears to try some jellied eels, maybe a trip on the big wheel and then march outside Parliament with the Brexit people.

I actually got a call from them yesterday afternoon. The guy asked if I wanted to go down. I asked him if they would pay my travel - he said no but they would give me £40 Amazon vouchers. No thanks mate!
