Giganews!!!!!

Hi

Last couple of days my usenet has gone from outstanding speed to OMG crapiola. I am using Giganews, SSL port. I am sure it's being throttled!!

Anyone shed any light?

Thanks

Unless it's recently changed VM has throttled Usenet and p2p for some time (only peak and weekends) It's separate from ttheir traffic management .

Try an alternate port as some get past it.

On Supernews i use port SSL 443 and last time i checked i didn't lose any speed, hopefully that hasn't changed.

Is your regular download speed still ok on speedtest.net?

Re: Giganews!!!!!

I use port 443 on astraweb and get 200+Mbps on 20 connection. If it's older stuff most Usenet providers prioritise newer stuff so older stuff tends to drop to about 1/4 to 1/2 speed

Speed test is fine thanks, getting what I should be.

Which doesn't tell you anything about the link between you and giganews.. Try a trace to the servers as perhaps maybe the routing is being temp diverted due to a problem.

Try downloading really new content as Kymmy suggests to see if that makes a difference.

Maxing out my connection downloading on supernews on port 443 with my usual 20 connections which uses the Giganews backbone.

You're not alone with this problem, I have been having the same problem for about a week now getting about 10-20mb on a 200mb connection, while speed everywhere else is fine.

This also seems to only be problem with Giganews/Supernews as a few other people here are also having the same problem.

I use Astraweb as a back up and haven't had any problems, this is a Supernews/Giganews centered problem.

looks like it is back to normal now but I love it how VM just seem to ignore posts for 3 days. They must sit there with their fingers crossed saying "please let it fix itself".

I've always gone with supernews. I found giganews too expensive and the stuff you get with it you can get for free elsewhere.

I noticed similar issues with Supernews recently on the EU servers. When I switched to the US servers, speed was fine.

Can I just jump in here and ask a question, as its been a while since I've used usenet and my last provider was either Giganews or Astraweb.

Have the DMCA takedown notices stopped? As soon as all that started, there was no point in using usenet anymore, unless I'm missing something.

No you need to be quick sometimes, like for Supernatural it'll be gone in a few days.

Still doesn't stop me getting what I want and would never use Torrents again as I feel safer.
