The X Files is back!

Mulder and Scully, and assistant deputy director Skinner (and the smoking man) are all back for a new series!

Re: The X Files is back!

Still monster of the week episodes plus a story arc? One of the best things about the original run was the ability to actually keep people watching with Monster of the week episodes that were always reasonably good.

It seems a lot of actors are ditching movies for TV returns. Absolutely loving this era of TV in which we can find the likes of Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sean Bean, Kevin Spacey on TV etc. It's really overwhelming seeing the quality of TV shows now. DC and Marvel are producing 8/10 content everytime, Arrow, Flash, Agents of Shield, Daredevil. You've got a massively strong cast in Sherlock, Game of Thrones.

The Netflix era?

Will start watching the US timeline tonight as I do with everything else. Channel 5 will lose track and get massively behind. Person Of Interest fell to that problem. Another show bound for Netflix soon anyway.

Was hoping to follow this on C5 as I can't be bothered pirating it.

What's their problem with scheduling?

Re: The X Files is back!

I have watched the first two episodes shown so far.

While it was nice to see Mulder and Scully again, I wasn't impressed.

It came across to me as just yet another badly written Conspiracy episode. (Although I admit I did like how it tied into real life stuff that has happened since the series finished.)

Spoiler:
So, just because Nina from The Americans tells Mulder that she was actually taken by men and not aliens, suddenly he just abandons his beliefs and decides "IT'S ALL BEING DONE BY THE SHADOW GOVERNMENT!", despite everything that he has seen?! And - hang on - didn't he do the same back at the start of season 5, when the word of one person made him think the whole alien side of things was a hoax and it was all being done by the government / military / corporations etc.? Why, yes he did, back in "Redux"!

It shouldn't be news to Mulder that men were carrying out abductions and experiments, or making use of alien technology - he bloody well knew the Syndicate was doing that for the Colonists and for itself back in the original series - so WTF did hearing one lone abductee say "it was men, not aliens" make him decide the Conspiracy was just men all along, rather than men working for aliens?

And it's not just everything Mulder's seen that has now conveniently been called into question just so that Carter can retcon the Conspiracy, there's everything *we've* seen too.

Nope, turns out it was all just the men in black performing a massive alien hoax because <reasons>, so that they can TAKE OVER THE WORLD WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT, even though they've *long* been in possession of badass alien-derived weapons and spacecraft and Stargate style zero point energy...

Episode two was better, but was nothing special for a MotW episode. It also had two pointless and overly long dream sequences.

It's no surprise to me that episode one was written by Chris Carter, but I expected better from James Wong for the second episode.

Episode three is written by Darin Morgan, so I'm expecting (hoping) that it will be a hell of a lot better than the first two (especially the premier).

Standard C5 uselessness when it comes to US TV...

Only seen the first one so far - considered it average - watchable, entertaining, but nothing special.

I suspect most peoples expectations were probably too high to start with.
The original nine seasons had a lot of poor episodes as well as really good ones, memories are often rose tinted.

Pretty much what the BBC used to be like, back when they screened anything from the US.

Memories of trying to chase Star Trek:TNG around the BBC2 schedule ...

My expectations were low, as I've long thought that The X Files went downhill as the original series progressed anyway!

Re: The X Files is back!

Nostalgia for the first two I guess. Episode 3 however is on another planet, absolutely dire in my opinion. If this is the best their writer can deliver then this will be done and dusted soon. Besides Mulder and Skully, I never felt I was actually watching the X-files with that one.

People above are already pointing out just how silly it started but to get sillier.. Well  It was the seriousness of the first three seasons that made this show good. High viewership eventually dies down but I'm now underwhelmed.

I've been loving it so far. I missed Mulder and Scully. Found the last few series poor and the second movie pretty awful.

I think the lighthearted humerus episodes were good and sometimes really good. Bit like when Supernatural does them.

Nothing will ever beat the Jose Chung's from outer space episode :D

Episode three was a massive improvement over episodes one and two (*especially* over episode one)... no surprise, as it was written by Darin Morgan.

A shame, then, that it's the only Darin Morgan episode in this "revival" / "event series" / "mini series" :(

I have no hope for Chris Carter's next episodes, five and six, being any good.

It's popcorn and bubblegum trash TV, easy to watch, doesn't take any brain power. I will never watch it, but it will be a populist sun reader water dispenser topic I suspect.

Its anything but trash TV, but following your recent posts it seems that you are just a silly person out for attention and trying to cause trouble.

Also X Files isn't new, it started in the early 90s and was a massivly popular show.

hear, hear. It pains me to say that it was 20 years ago but I can still remember it like it was yesterday. It was all everyone talked about at school and you could feel the tension in the air as everyone waited for the next episode. I am sure it was on at 10 o'clock on Monday nights. There was nothing else like it at the time you we waited every week to see what mysteries and conspiracies awaited us. (cue the theme music).

Just like Star Wars, X-Files is legendary and nothing will ever rival it!

You were at school and 20 years pains you. I had finished school, done a degree and was in my third job....

You know what never mind the posts on here personally I quite liked the first episode and liked the expectation of looking to a new series on linear TV.

Totally agree, I was 12/13 when it started and at the time was the best SciFi show on TV. Also not to mention every teenager had the hots for Gillian Anderson :D

It lost the plot in the last few series though.

When on the BBC It did get shifted around after a while and in particular the episode 'Fire' Was shown much later at night, think the Beeb thought it was too scary for just after watershed:rolleyes:

yeah that is what always ****ed me off about the BBC. The internet wasn't around back then and Sky was a rarity. The BBC has never had any respect US shows (including Star Trek TNG and Buffy a few years later). I can remember the x-files being bounced between BBC1 and BBC and shown at 9, 10 and 11 o'clock. They never told you when it was the end of the season, it just stopped, and they never told you when the new one was starting. You just hoped that the Radio Times put it on the front cover or something to make you notice when it was coming back. Luckily these days we have got the internet and the tv calendar which we have been talking about in another thread.

I thought the first Ep was pretty good. If it trundles along at that standard I won't complain.

Time doesn't seem to be teating Scully very kindly. She seems to have a real face full of Botox. :(

Fox, on the other looks like he's never been away. :)

Horizon 09-02-2016 20:52

Re: The X Files is back!

Just watching ep3 now, oh dear.... and I see ep4 has come through too.

I loved this series when it was on. It was the ultimate conspiracy theory, alien invasion and monster fest series. But what made it believable were the two main characters. You believed in the aliens because Mulder did and you knew Scully was always going to miss the aliens and monsters and be skeptical.

I cannot remember how the X-Files finished but I do remember they concluded it with the films, or so I thought. But the new 1st episode seems to turn all that on its head and it doesn't sit well with me at all. THe second ep was better, but this 3rd ep is just one big -MOD EDIT- take.

THe X-Files, as was, was a superb series in its day but this revival is not sincere and thus I cannot believe in any of it. And that was the point of the old series, wasn't it? Being a believer like Mulder.

And just to prove how much I dislike this series, I am typing this while "watching" the 3rd ep. I guess I'll last the whole course and watch the other three, but then that will be that.

Did I say that the 3rd ep was -MOD EDIT- awful? Well, I have now!

Stephen 09-02-2016 21:31

Re: The X Files is back!

Have to disagree abut the new series. It has felt very sincere and well worth the wait. I can't remember how the series ended either but the second movie was rubbish. This has felt like a much better continuation and hope there will be more.

Episode 3 was a right laugh and was meant to be totally toungue in cheek and a bit of a not serious mickey take of itself.

Re: The X Files is back!

I haven't seen any of the new ones yet but if they are as bad as people say they are (or at least not as good as expected) then hopefully Fox will throw a tonne of dosh at the next season and they'll get some fantastic writers and spend the time to hammer out some cracking stories like we are used to. They can do it with 24 and Homeland so X-Files should be no exception.

Tezcatlipoca 14-02-2016 18:37

Re: The X Files is back!

Why would Fox bother doing that when it's still getting great ratings despite the quality not being very good?

The writers for the "revival" are the same as for the original run, anyway - including the show's creator Chris Carter. Can't see Fox ditching him.

Not sure why you mentioned Homeland. It's not from Fox, and - unlike 24 and The X Files (and Prison Break and Heroes) - it didn't get cancelled after going down the toilet only to later be resurrected years later.

I get that, but most of the time they do these kind of episodes after 5 series' or so, not the 3rd episode of the 1st series.

That episode totally ruined it for me.

Re: The X Files is back!

It is definitely coming back:

The X-Files returned to FOX for season 10 earlier this year, and there is a season 11 planned – it is really a matter of finding time in the busy schedule of the stars and others involved.
Chris Carter spoke with Digital Spy about the series in a new interview, and he gave fans the latest update on the next season of the series, which stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. He said the following:

“There was talk of trying to film them in November, but that said, that would mean I would have to be getting to work right now, and I’ve not even made the calls. I’d have to go into very quick action to make that happen, so, until someone gives me a clear idea about when they would actually have open schedules to film episodes, I’m going to continue on my vacation.”

X-Files Season 11 starts in the US (Fox) on Jan 3 2018, the season consists of 10 episodes.

I haven't seen any of the new ones yet. Because the BBC dicked about when they originally aired years ago and never told you when it was the end of the season or when it was coming back, and it just randomly disappeared, I think I have only ever seen up to season 6. I am working my way through them properly atm and have just started season 4 and am looking forward to catching up with the newer ones.

As an fyi though, this may be the last season because Gillian Anderson won't be coming back.

I am sure that BBC eventually lost the rights and the final 2-3 series ended up airing on Sky1.

I do remember that even though it aired at 9pm there were a few episodes the BBC didn't show till 11pm. Fire was one that I remember not being on till that time.

Re: The X Files is back!

So er, episode one easily ranks amongst the worst episodes of the entire franchise. I had to check fan reaction to check it wasn't me just being a knob but nope, the consensus is pretty much the same, it was a stinking pile of crap. Literally riding the $ and Nostalgia train. There's still hope that everything Carter didn't touch will be good though, we'll see after tonight's episode.

Given that I ranted about the previous seasons MoW episode, I find myself wanting that more than the 40 different angles and close ups of a Ford Mustang.

---------- Post added at 03:07 ---------- Previous post was at 02:13 ----------

Episode 2 is far better.

There's still plenty of life in it. Just not in anything Carter writes nowadays or late into the original run. There's not been a bad episode besides the first in both my own opinion and general consensus. The fifth is a myth-arc episode that isn't written or directed by Carter and it's fine, it works. :erm:

2,3 and 4 are great episodes. 4 is a standout.

Will there be an X-Files without Gillian Anderson? Recently, creator Chris Carter spoke with Digital Spy about the future of the FOX TV show.

As reported earlier, the sci-fi drama’s 11th season will be the last for Anderson. The cast also includes David Duchovny, Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Annabeth Gish, Lauren Ambrose, Robbie Amell, Veronica Cartwright, Chris Owens, and Dean Haglund.

In the interview, Carter revealed he thinks The X-Files has more story to tell, with or without Anderson’s Dana Scully.

“I think that certainly The X-Files has more life in it, there are more stories to tell, with Gillian or without. I’m sorry to see her go, I’ve never actually considered doing this show without her, so is this the end?

It’s the end of something, I don’t know if it’s the beginning of something new. But certainly we will have to all put our heads together and figure out where to go from here.”

And what about the end of season 11? Will it be a series finale? Will there be a conclusion for Scully? Carter says:

“It’s a culmination of the ten episodes and it’s a culmination of a storyline. I can tell you that it involves their son, who they’ve always considered to be their son, revelations there. It will certainly be looked upon as a cliffhanger of sorts, but also an episode that answers so many questions.”
I am only half way through season 6 atm so I don't know what the new stuff is like but I would like to think it can go on for a few more seasons. As with all long running series like SG1 and Grey's Anatomy they introduce new cast members to keep it fresh so I would like to think they can come up with a fantastic story for Scully's departure which pays tribute to the character whilst at the same time introducing somebody new who can offer a different dynamic to the Mulder-Scully relationship.

This happened briefly with the X-files already, Duchovny dispute etc and the show tanked. Sadly those ideas just won't work with this show, it's a cult classic. I'm confident they could run the show with a solo lead in Duchovny if they wanted to and still make it good. I just don't believe they should head down that route again and add an entirely new partner for Mulder. They should just expand on Miller and Einstein more to fill in a handful of episodes per season and have Mulder run solo in Mythology episodes and the other handful of Monster of the week episodes.

If they pulled off successful reactions to Miller and Einstein episodes they could seriously pass the torch over and continue into a modern day X-files using the old format with those two lead characters. The same way you make/reboot movies like Jumanji. It'll not be the old cult classic of old, which is what we're clinging to now, but at least the transition would be smooth.
