Phishing email?
Just received a very official looking email, 'apparently ' from Virgin Media.
This was the main text in the message. In our contstant effort to improve your experience with Virgin Media, we have completed an important database upgrade. We request our customers to take part in this process. Please update your profile with Virgin Media until 23, January 2016. Failure to update your profile until the limit date may lead to service interruption. To avoid any inconvenience, we strongly recommend to update your profile with Virgin Media now. A very convincing looking message and the website it takes you to looks very good. I didn't enter my details of course, especially as it asked for my card number as well. Take care folks, this one does look kosher. |

Re: Phishing email?
There is only one small spelling mistake but one giveaway is the Virgin Media logo copyright symbol. It is 2015 on the genuine web site but is 2012 on this fake one.

There's quite a bit of poor English there. |

And there was only one spelling mistake.:) |
Re: Phishing email?
That is sometimes true but I find there are particular types of error which foreign scammers tend to make and the fact that most of them learn 'American' English also helps to identify them when they're purporting to be from a major UK company.

Re: Phishing email?
Any email strongly recommending you to update your profile, which includes a link to a form where you can hand over all your lovely personal details, is deeply suspicious.
Sometimes it helps to check the message headers to see the email address it originated from (not the reply-to address, which can be different, and a legitimate one for the company being spoofed). A sender address from a phishing scammer will often look similar to the official email of the company being spoofed, but be subtly different in spelling, punctuation or some other way. |
Re: Phishing email?
LOL you'd have to be feeble to believe that, it's dreadful, masses of mistakes in grammar etc, although places like the Daily Mail are now full of errors, companies especially Nationals are still by and large pretty good, mark as spam and delete.
The advice to look at headers is sound as is a good dose of scepticism when faced with correspondence like that. |
Re: Phishing email?
I delete anything like that kind of e-mail, they are never genuine.

Why would having an "out of date" profile with Virgin cause your internet to be shut off? As long as your payment details are correct, you're good (And trust me, if those were wrong, you'd know about it!). If you've moved, well, you'd be paying for something you don't have access to, so that's just silly. Any e-mail asking to "update" personal details that the company should know, with a link especially is a massive red flag. Most companies these days explicitly state they never ask for personal information via e-mail as it a massive risk. Any unsolicited e-mails like this should be either deleted, or if there is any doubt, followed up by direct contact with the company using your normal channels, NOT any links provided. |
Re: Phishing email?
Correct. I've had one or two quite convincing ones, so I logged into the account via normal channels just to make sure.
Never NEVER NEVER use their 'convenient URL' Ever. |

Re: Phishing email?
Aparently there is a very plausible one doing the rounds now that has your personal postal address and an authentic looking bill. There's a link:dozey: but if you use it it puts a cryptolocker on your system and an escalating ransom.
