Terrorist couple jailed

Quote:

A husband and wife who plotted a terror attack in London have been jailed for a minimum of 27 and 25 years.

Mohammed Rehman, 25, discussed targeting the London Underground and Westfield shopping centre on social media under the name "Silent Bomber".

He and his wife Sana Ahmed Khan were convicted of preparing terrorist acts.

Jailing them both for life at the Old Bailey, Mr Justice Baker told Rehman he had been "determined to fulfil the Islamic State's call for jihad".

The couple's trial had heard how bomb-making chemicals were found at Rehman's Reading home, where he had filmed himself setting off a small explosion in the back garden.

He had been planning an attack to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the 7 July London bombings, the trial was told.

Well they'll have plenty of time to think about it all now. Let's just hope they're not allowed to spread their hatred inside prison.

It never fails to amaze me as to how incompetent some wannabe terrorists are.

We've had some lucky escapes over the last 10 years or so, I'm sure when the inevitable attacks come all the good work of the security services wil be forgotten.

Yep the Twitter name of Silent Bomber with an avatar of Jihadi John was very discreet

Four lions is looking more and more like a serious documentary.

More "life" terms of 25 and 27 years. Out to make bombs again in 10 perhaps?

Not possible.

A life term, unlike other sentences, comes with a *minimum* tariff - they don't get out in less than the minimum. And if they seem to present an ongoing danger, they can be kept in jail a lot longer. And if/when they do get out, they will be on licence for the rest of their lives, and can be returned to jail very easily.

Presumably the sentence can be appealed and will be.

It's pretty much in line with what I'd expect for this crime, the best they can hope for is some occasional days leave before they even think about parole.

Let's hope so.

I must say I'm still confused about whether this pair were really very stupid in broadcasting their intentions or there's more to their arrests.

I'm quite glad they were that stupid & hope many more are equally as dim.

It does beggar belief a bit that someone is dense enough to imagine that gong on a public social media network with a name like 'silent bomber' asking what is the best target to hit is without attracting the attention of well.. everyone really, then compounding it by showing a 'test explosion'

I don't think that it was purely the twitter names/content, I'm sure that the security services have a lot more in their surveillance arsenal than some nerd programming a computer searching social media for keywords.

That's certainly true, but how stupid do you have to be to post that sort of stuff where it might get reported in the first place?

Maybe this pair confused it for a terrorist's handbook. :D

It's the dim ones that get caught, the "good" ones don't usually get the chance to pass on their skills for obvious reasons.
