Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
Vevo seems to have a bigger and different selection including lots of live stuff - but I must say the promo video select archive is very limited.
I wonder if it will replace VM's own OD service - which is also quite limited. |

I certainly hope there's something exciting that they've got up their sleeves. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
So basically it looks like VM are replacing a paid music service with the ad-supported Vevo that is available for free on many other platforms? There really seems to be less and less that you get for your money.
|
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
It depends on what VM are offering - it may just be the OD app.
But Vevo off 24/7 streams too - http://www.vevo.com/tv |

That seems to just imply that the web-based services like Youtube and Vevo will be more accessible - not a part of the service

At least everyone will be able to access Vevo for free on their Tivos. Not sure if customers with the VHD or V+ boxes will get it, though, as it is an app. The thing I most worry about is which of the music videos are suitable for children. I can put on a play list that isn't a 15 at the moment and they can watch that when I'm not in the room, but I dare not just let Vevo play by itself. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
3 new channels will launch on VM in 2016 no information yet on to which channels they are but i'm hopefull to have further information within the next 28 days, i think history hd could be one of them.

I find it a great big con, when the TV providers state "bazillions of channels" and then you realise that most of them are standard, then the same channel in HD, and then the same one +1. This must account for neatly 50% of the channels advertised. How many different channels do we actually get? I'm sure it's not that many. And of him, I'd say 75% are actually rubbish, and I would dream of watching them. I have to say I really do find VM really poor. And as for the On Demand (or lack of it) offered to customers! Well don't get me started. |

2016 needs to be designated the year of TV content for VM, whether it's through the provision of new conventional linear broadcast channels or streaming, I don't care. It would be such a shame if VM missed the opportunity to be the kings of content. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
Indeed. If they don't do something soon, there are a fair few subscribers who will be happy to leave.

For a while, the were king of on demand, but lost that title to Sky when Sky got their act together on that. But king of content is not everything, and VM are hardly lacking in content; HBO being the only significant absence, which VM are powerless to do anything about. Pretty much every other aspect of VM is far superior to Sky's in my view and those requiring HBO content can always take out a Now TV sub. Not ideal as it requires extra expense, but sadly we live in a world of exclusive content deals. Networks such as HBO would rather make more money by doing exclusive deals than give a larger number of paying customers access. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

I only moved back to VM in July after nearly four years away, I really feel VM is not as good as when I left. The on demand is awful compared to what it was when I left, and TiVo, is not exactly as good as the salesman made it out to be. Come next July I'm back to sky, or some other package I can assemble myself. I'm sorry but Virgin really does suck now, it is so far inferior to the services I was getting for. Sky when I left. I hate saying this as I really dislike Sky, but it really is a far better, more customer conscious service. Virgin just do not seem interested. |

I've used both and would choose Sky every time which is of course personal choice and more to do with the fact I generally use Sky Catch up , Sky Movies OD and Sky Boxsets. In my opinion the On Demand content is so much easier to browse and not hidden behind menu after menu. In a nutshell we are all different and use our systems in a different way , if you predominantly record I can see your point however my use differs slightly. |

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
what do we dream about in 2016 friends?? since people keep buying now tv entertainment packages for sky atlantic that channel seems further away than ever. My broadband speed goes up in april and i get a new hub then apparently.
Apart from that i dont see much happening. new tivo box with apps like amazon and tivo should be a must for vm. i dont see how they can compete otherwise. they need to be the one tv provider that offers everything (at a price) again for all the price hikes i would like the missing freeview channels and sky channels added. purely for the sake of "youre paying the same as sky and they get all this so you need to have it. and these channels are free so of course you can have them". 2014 and 2015 have been quiet years then it comes to channel additions. compared to the infamous 2013 year of utter glory. lets hope 2016 turns it around. happy new year all. im sat in my mums boxroom 30 years of age drinking sparkling rose wine in simpson pyjamas. god bless us all! |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
Happy New Year to you too Vince (and to everybody else).
Extreme Sports was due to close at 6am. On satellite it actually closed at midday, was replaced with a static caption and then later removed from the EPG altogether. The space looks as though it's going to be being used by a new channel 'The Church Channel'. What is Extreme Sports showing on VM? I'm not near a box where I am. |

The next TIVO will have to be pretty good if VM are to survive. I, for one, am determined not to be left behind if VM are to continue moving to the slow lane. I am very close to making a complete re-evaluation of my options. I have already considered changing my TV package as follows: Terrestrial with a recordable Freeview box. Netflix (through smart TV and Roku) Amazon (through smart TV and Roku) Now TV (through my Roku).. That provides me with a good deal of content and I would miss very little of what I currently watch. Apart from the set up cost of the Freeview box, all of this would cost me the small sum of £20.56 per month. I won't make that move just yet and I could be persuaded not to if VM come up with the goods. I really hope they do and that they start offering their own packages of streaming services covering TV series, films (on subscription rather than PPV), music, nature programming, good stuff for children, etc. VM could offer a great deal if only they ditched their slow train for a bullet train instead. There's so much they could do with a bit of imagination. It has taken only a year for optimism (with all those new channels launched on 2014), to turn to despair, with previously loyal VM viewers jumping over to the dark side. This alone should show VM the urgency of the situation. If the new TIVO box turns out to be a disappointment, I think a lot more people will jump ship. I may even be one of them, and I never thought I'd say that. |

If they no longer have an interest in the TV side of things, or believe that only certain customers are worth serving, why don't they just come clean and say so? It's getting to the point of embarrassment as more and more previously loyal customers have or are considering jumping ship. I am one of them, but I would never go to Sky. It will be a Freeview/Freesat combination with recording facilities. Any material that I want that is not available will be sourced from elsewhere. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

Why go to the expense of a Freeview box? Why not just drop your package to TV M? Granted, you don't get every Freeview channel, but I personally find the missing ones no great loss. For the few that are missing, you could always put a USB stick in the back of your Sony TV and record that way. When I was researching Freeview PVRs a couple of years ago, they all seemed to loose unused series links after six months, only had two tuners. and no Whishlist functionality. Those are a few of the reasons that I choose TV M over a Freeview PVR, when I went down the route that you are now considering. |

No, they won't and that is exactly why VM need to get some content of their own, or sign up to contracts with providers who can provide such content.
However the problem with relying on others is that VM has nothing to bargain with. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
My concern regarding the launch of Sky Q and 4K content on the platform is that Sky will step down the bitrates of the HD movies and sports feeds we get. I'm pretty sure I didn't imagine it when we saw the picture quality of SD versions fall when we couldn't get the HD versions on Virgin Media, and I wouldn't put it passed Sky to do similar again.
Not that the HD we get from Sky on VM is anything to write home about - I compared two TiVo recordings I had of the movie Hugo, one recorded from Sky Movies, the other from 4HD, and I couldn't believe the difference, the 4HD one was massively superior whereas the Sky picture lacked sharpness and 'sparkle'. ---------- Post added at 13:11 ---------- Previous post was at 13:05 ---------- Quote:
I for one am quite happy to have VM sitting out the overpriced auctions for sport and other content. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
I never watch Sky Movies on the channels. On Sky all the Premieres are delivered over Satellite and instantly playable and are excellent quality in fact the file sizes are far higher than the downloadable versions. As an example Avengers Age of Ultron is showing 7.03GB compared to the downloadable file of 4.34GB.

There is an issue with competition for sports content, I agree, but there is plenty of other content that could be brought to our screens that is not available on other platforms. The ITV Collections addition to On Demand is welcome, and if expanded, could compensate us for the absence of ITV Encore. More initiatives such as these would be appreciated by most. The more expensive stuff, such as sport and films should be something for Liberty Global to resolve, IMO. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
I was in Currys and PC World over the Xmas period having a look around and customers were leaving with 4K teles left, right and centre.
I don't have one, but it definitely looks like they are getting very popular. I wonder what factors VM look at before they decide to invest in 4K content or not? |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)
Quote:
They are being sold on what might be coming available in the future as opposed to what is available now. I was in Curry's looking at the televisions and was approached by a member of staff who then proceeded to go through all the benefits of the 4K TV's but spent more time getting me to compare the difference in the picture between a HD TV and a 4K TV than being able to let me know where I would get the content from. The cost of them has also come down so this makes them more affordable too |

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

The TV marketers have done a wonderful job selling 4k TVs to people who don't really need them. 4k content is very thin on the ground and the size of TV most people buy, for normal sized homes, will gain nothing picture quality wise over a 1080p set. How many normal sized homes buy 60" TVs? 60" is the minimum sized TV that will gain from 4k. For enthusiasts, large 4k sets makes sense, especially when 4k bluray becomes widely available. And of course, also for well off people with big houses and room for large screens. Content availability will doubtless improve in the coming years, but without a big screen, it is still pretty pointless. But given that a big chunk of the general public don't bother to check these things out, manufacturers will continue to milk the 4k TV cow, and VM will have to offer an unnecessary 4k box for fear of being perceived as out of date. |

The Bike Channel?? Hope that isn't about push bikes!! I expect that the five 'new' channels are simply variants of existing channels (HD, +1 and the like). How depressing... :grind: |

There is only one significant chunk of content missing; Sky Atlantic. But that has been the case for around five years. The rest of the missing channels are insignificant. Ok, Universal HD would be good, but the content is still available. Price rises are a fact of life, that no one likes but you don't expect anything extra from utility companies when their prices go up. Pay TV is what it has always has been; darned expensive and overpriced. Now there is an option for those that are dissatisfied, as I was; Cut the Cord. Pay TV services aren't going down in price anytime soon! |
