Speed Upgrade Questions?
I received an email from virgin media stating that I was entitled to a speed upgrade, currently on 50Mb, new speed increase is 70Mb. Checked online when the speed increase would be ready, it is already ready.
Few questions. I selected to add the upgrade and I was informed that there was no extra charge. Am I entering into a new contract if I continue with this upgrade? also, is the upgrade carried out automatically or is there a need for an engineer to call? |
Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
It will be a new contact and no need for an engineer.

Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
you can continue with current equipment, they'll just send a new config file down to the shub which tells it it is allowed to go faster. In previous upgrades the free upgrade has tied you in to another 12 month contract but afaik it is not the case this time round.
|
Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
OK, a bit of doubt if this speed upgrade is a new contract, anyone confirm either yes or no?
|
Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
no
|
Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
thanks dude. I was just about to send Ben a pm and ask him. I was sure I saw a post a few months ago saying no but I cant find it anywhere.

Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
I was going to say. How can you enforce a new contract on someone when they have no way of refusing the speed upgrade?
It says for me it's coming to 70 end of this month but there is nothing to say I can refuse. |
Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
You can refuse by not accepting it; it is an opt in upgrade and not a mandatory one. The only way you will be upgraded is if you either ring up and ask for it or if you activate it online. You can either stay as you are now and VM are happy for you to do so or you can request the new free upgrade at no charge with a new 12 month contract.
That is all hypothetical because as we have already said this particular upgrade does not involve a new 12 month contract but that is how it has worked in the past. |
Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
I see- sorry I thought it was automatic. So the "it's coming soon" will be replaced with a button? I getcha! :)

Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
Hi all,
I have a £7 per month loyalty discount which states on my bill 'if you change this package you may lose this discount'. If I choose to accept this free speed upgrade does this mean I have changed the package and will lose the discount? Thanks in advance. |
Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
I doubt it as it's not a package change. And no it's not a new contract. Well I've had the upgrade and not been told so.

Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
But 70 was the hype from 2+ years ago, they are now hyping/charging for 200 and delivering 11 -30 .
The truth is out there! Or maybe a whistle blower? |

Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
Just had the upgrade from 50Mb to 70Mb and all seems fine, best part of it for me is the boost in upload speed from 3Mb to 5Mb.

Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
Hmm, mine has disappeared from myvirginmedia page since renegotiating a new price on my package :(
Now it says "Your speed boost is complete! Your connection speed is now up to 50Mbps." |
Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
and what does your config say?
|
Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?

70 and 150 are only available as free upgrades for existing 50 and 100 customers. You are a 'new', not 'old', 50 customer, having re-negotiated your package. |
Re: Speed Upgrade Questions?
I suppose that makes sense but i asked during the call if i could get the boost to 70 right now and was told i'd have to wait for it to be done in January. Not once was it mentioned that i'd no longer get it just because i was recontracting on the exact same package.
