That would have been my point. As a Christian I do believe Jesus is coming back, this time as king but we do NOT know when.

Some cult groups have updated and reinterpreted their dates multiple times as predictions have proved inaccurate.

2,000 years to make a comeback is quite a long time.

and "complete silence" in all that time is the one that tells you a lot.

but you have to wonder what he does with himself everyday.
for the last 2,000 years.

Thing is, if they want to study the Bible to the point where they feel prepared for the End of days then they ought to have read where it says no-one (not even Jesus) knows when it will happen.

I think you're confusing the Bible with the Koran.

As far as I'm aware the vast majority of Christians most definitely do not take the Bible literally or consider the entire thing the infalliable word of God. Even the Bible doesn't consider itself in its entirety to be the word of God, there are passages that explicitly state they are not the word of God, but that of the author.

This in no way diminishes Christianity. Quite the opposite I would suggest.

As a case in point both the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury apparently believe in evolution and are fine with post-Big Bang cosmology. Takes a fair amount of 'interpretation' to reconcile a literal reading of Genesis with evolution and cosmology.

The Koran in the eyes of many of its adherents, however....

Even if the date given was, say, 10,000 CE?

I'm big on science and evidence but not sure we could debunk the Bible based on something not due to happen for several millennia. There are a whole bunch of ways we could be extinguished between now and then.

Not the Young Earth variety that comes from a literal interpretation of Genesis, et al, though.

I was pretty clear on what I was referring to.

Diversionary much?

I respectfully disagree, but then we inevitably fundamentally disagree on the source of such 'guidance'.

I'd also point out I was directly addressing a specific point you made that I don't think can be backed up - that the Bible is entirely unadulterated and protected by God. It was translated by humans. It was compiled by humans. I am not a scholar of such things but I am not aware of such scholars who would concur with your statement.

I also pointed out that what you are saying is exactly what a fundamental Muslim would say about the Koran.

Not diversionary in the slightest. Your viewpoint is just somewhat more 'fundamentalist' than the heads of both the Anglican and Catholic churches.

On that note this is, as always, a hot button topic and one regrettably not too amenable to dispassionate discussion. Any further attempts from me to do so seem futile even if I am just responded to existing posts. I'm out. :)

The concurrence of others is not important to me. Nor do I feel the need to "back up" the statement that the word of God is protected. Believe it or don't.

You confuse fundamentalism (literal translation) with faith (spiritual guidance).

I have for a long time believed that all religions are man made and started off as just a way of keeping the population in check during a time of superstitions and over the past 1000 years has grown to a major money making spin.

As for evolution people are gonna laugh at my beliefs but there is evidence to support it.

I believe that we were created as a species by Alien intervention, many ancient drawings depict visitors from out of space etc. I also believe that the story of Atlantis to be true, i believe we once held technology far beyond what we have now and for some reason it was taken off us.
