World War III Will Be Less High-Tech Than Anyone Imagines

Last year, the (US) Naval Academy made two distinct changes in how it operates—one that’s a natural progression in cyberwarfare, the other a clear response to how thoroughly we rely on that technology.

“First, they've created a cyberwarfare center and created the first class of midshipmen who will be cybersecurity majors,” cybersecurity and military expert Peter W. Singer recently told me. “Second, they required that every midshipman learn how to do celestial navigation like they did back in the 1700s. We're preparing both for a world of cyberwarfare and, ‘oh my goodness, what if I have to go back to navigating by the stars?’”
What would happen if the next war knocked out our technology? (GPS, smartphones, Internet, etc.)

"Ghost Fleet" is an excellent book, like "Red Storm Rising" updated for the 21st Centurt.

Stuff like this is exactly why I'm doing the MSc I am. Seriously serious stuff.

With respect to navigation (not precision munitions) eLORAN. Governments across the world have been bringing systems online over the past few years. Even the US who had originally canned it realised that in the light of jamming attacks on the Korean peninsula by the loons in the North realised that it would be foolish not to have a backup to GPS for, at the very least, maritime safety.

I also think it will be less high-tech than some people imagine. Just watch the carnage when Facebook goes down for 10 minutes.

Interesting he mentioned Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rsing. Excellent book for its time.

People would have to communicate with their mouths and not their index fingers.

You need an MSc to navigate by the stars???? I can find the pub in the dark!

Re: World War III Will Be Less High-Tech Than Anyone Imagines

I was navigating and mapping using highly accurate astronomical observations and calculations over 30 years ago, using kit like this, star tables and a calculator. In the middle of nowhere with no known landmarks or fancy GPS/laser technology, it's how it was done. How things have changed...

What is your MSc in?

Ignitionnet 26-09-2015 20:40

Re: World War III Will Be Less High-Tech Than Anyone Imagines

Information Security. Cybersecurity is the apparently 'cool' name for it now though :)

Ramrod 26-09-2015 21:27

Re: World War III Will Be Less High-Tech Than Anyone Imagines

Or "InfoSec", apparently :D

Mr Robot it's a cool series with somewhat realistic hacking....

And the Chinese make most electronics for many makes, what's to stop them putting backdoors on the chips? Take Netis routers for example ( UDP port 53413) ....

Re: World War III Will Be Less High-Tech Than Anyone Imagines

Strangely enough, that's the basis of the plot of "Ghost Fleet"...

A robust accreditation and assurance process.

Either way the hardware isn't usually the problem. It's the people who design, configure and operate it.

Indeed. Fred Piper, likes the "Cyber security" word and as a founder, he can do anything he likes. Vodaphone and GCHQ are closely connected with the MSc course/Centre, and they are up to date as much they can be ;)

A few decent EMP's and the whole world will revert to firing bits of lead at each other.

Hugh 27-09-2015 09:22

Re: World War III Will Be Less High-Tech Than Anyone Imagines

A lot of military 3C systems are hardened against EMP, and various equipment such as the Abrams M1.

Biggest worry is the loss of comms/GPS satellites.

True but there's a lot of stuff that isn't

Most of a countries infrastructure would collapse: No electricity, no phones or mobiles, no internet or email. No TV or radio. Most transport paralysed including private cars. Most computers / tablets fried. Gas and water cut off.

May as well just curl up and die then.

what you supposed to do with yourself when all that's down?

I worked for a company that worked on anti jamming GPS, so the only way to stop Military use of GPS is take out the GPS satellite.

I had dealings with the CPNI over the years.

These are the guys thinking about this kind of thing.

To be fair that is an understandable worry, map reading is such a chore

Hugh 28-09-2015 06:57

Re: World War III Will Be Less High-Tech Than Anyone Imagines

It's more that the military use the GPS for targeting/way finding, and the the comms satellites for, strangely enough, comms.....

Yeah course it is, if they'd been scouts instead of wasting their youth smoking and chasing girls this wouldn't be an issue
