Speeding up my galaxy S5

hey everyone,

My S5 is sluggish and lags . Any tips on speeding it up? I'll even consider rooting it if I have to :)

Thank you :)

I'd give up if I were you. I gave up on mine and went back to an iPhone 5 which worked much faster. The S5 is an odd one, a very high spec phone that still has the traditional Samsung lag.

I tried all the usual 'tricks' such as using a different launcher but they made no difference.

Reset it? I use a custom ROM (Phoenix ROM) which is pretty fast out of the box. There are plenty of custom firmwares for it (one of the big advantages of Samsung phones), some are much faster and specifically optimized for speed, though I picked mine because I wanted to stay as close to stock as possible.

I like mine. Sure, it's slower than the S6 but that's only noticeable once or twice a day. I've never experienced this "traditional Samsung lag" you speak of, and I've had every Samsung flagship from the S1 to the S6.

Is rooting the phone a safe thing to do? I'm on a Mac by the way, so any software I'd would need, would need to be Mac compatible :)

Just like the S3 and S4 I stupidly tried before, the S5 lags a lot. I believed someone on here who told me the S3 was better than my then-current 4S so I tried that. When I had my iPhone 5 I again believed that it would be a better performing phone but that lagged and stuttered too so I went back to a 5.

I couldn't believe it when my S5 was going the same way. I've gone back to my 5 and won't ever touch a Samsung phone again. Seems like MadGamer is also experiencing the traditional Samsung lag too.

Disable the bloatware. I did this and mine runs like a dream.

Re: Speeding up my galaxy S5

Try a factory reset, that will help in most cases and make sure you have the most up to date software.

Sometimes it can be caused by an app you have installed, eg memory manager or antivirus.

Search Google or watch YouTube video for disabling bloatware on android devices.

I have done it on my Galaxy S5 and Galaxy TAB PRO.

Rooting is safe. Samsung phones are extremely robust, as in it's pretty much impossible to brick them thanks to the low-level recovery system. Dunno about software compatibility though, I only know of Windows software - perhaps a Virtualbox might help?

In any case, the speed-optimized firmware usually comes pre-rooted already.

My S3 didn't lag, my S4 didn't lag, and my S5 doesn't lag. I'd be curious exactly what you mean by "traditional Samsung lag" since I can't find any source for it beside your own personal experience.

If Samsung is all you're used to then the lag is likely to be what you'd call normal. Try any iPhone from the 4S onwards and you'll see the difference.

Re: Speeding up my galaxy S5

I've just got a Samsung Galaxy 6 and I detect no lag compared to my old HTC One..In fact it's fabulously fast,it's instantaneous ..I love it..

No, if you want lag you want to try my Nexus 7 tablet..it's practically a brick after the Lollipop update. It currently takes about 5 minutes to open any app and to sign into WiFi..I can't wait to get something else..

Re: Speeding up my galaxy S5

very limited what can do without rooting it.

generally we talking uninstalling unneeded apps, better kernel, possibly adjusting cpu governor, io governor, blocking certian functions and then should be faster.

Although in my view the s5 is a pretty fast phone anyway, I have the 5+ model (g901f) and it is lightning fast.

Also I suggest staying on kitkat, its much more responsive than lollipop. Seems to be a rule of thumb that the best version of rom to use (on samsung) is the version shipped with the phone.

I have been working with iPhones since the day they came out, and HTCs, Blackberries, Windows phones and tablets for nearly fifteen years. The only thing I'd call normal is Apple owners considering their devices superior and failing to come up with any empirical evidence to support it when challenged.

Right now I still don't see any source backing up your claims. You haven't even been able to describe this mythical "Samsung lag" is other than "iPhones don't have it". There's three different people in this thread saying their Samsung phones don't lag, and there's you claiming they all have some traditional lag and implying everyone else is ignorant of it. Hmm.

Re: Speeding up my galaxy S5

A quick Google search on S5 lag or S4 lag issues shows it can be a problem. It's also one of the reasons the S6 is better due to Samsung listening and allowing to uninstall some of the bloat ware.

This is coming from a S2, S4, S6 Edge and S6 Edge+ owner.

No need to get defensive, seems like a lot of Samsung owners can't bare to have their precious devices criticised. It's just a phone, it doesn't have a soul.

You'll read whatever you want in to my posts but I've not "implied" anything of the sort. As for people saying their Samsungs don't lag, keep an eye on what this thread is about. 3 people have also related to the problem.

There are plenty of posts on the Android forums about the lag, I've said it is traditional *not* universal but ties in with my 3 experiences with Samsung phones.

I have an S4 from work and in the end I ditched it and bought myself an iPhone 6. Best thing I ever did phone-wise. The S4 had the habit where apps and/or kernel would "run away" and end up heating the phone up so much you had to take it out of your pocket it was so hot. The battery life also sucked as a consequence.

iOS by comparision has far better app management and so far, I do not see this issue in the iPhone.

Re: Speeding up my galaxy S5

I got it from EE, no idea if they still sell it tho now with the S6 been the latest and greatest. (they never marketed it as the 901f, their site showed the normal s5 specs).

I think I got my timing perfect, the best phone samsung have made that has removable battery and storage :)

I think its worth mentioning I also own a oneplusone which runs a variant of AOSP.

It is far slower than my s5+ in terms of responsiveness. I can only guess why and I think its slow flash storage, as it has a cpu thats almost as fast and more ram than my s5+. Or maybe just maybe touchwiz is now faster?

Re: Speeding up my galaxy S5

If I'm not mistaken the 901f was meant to be T-Mobile only at first.

Re: Speeding up my galaxy S5

EE and T-mobile are the same (It said that on my bill), that's why dumped them for O2.

That's Kinda weird Maggy ..
.. im finding Lollipop on my Nexus 7 to be really responsive with no lag lol

is it the Gen 1 or the 2013 Gen 2 Nexus 7 you have ? :)

Sure I can be mistaken. But for you to automatically assume I am mistaken without any evidence makes you the problem here.

Says the iPhone owner defending his device? I'm not just a Samsung owner, as you can see above. However I'm being defensive because your only counter so far is to accuse me of ignorance when I ask you what you mean by "traditional Samsung lag".

I have never claimed your Samsung didn't lag yet every time I point out mine doesn't you imply I must be mistaken or ignorant.

I've asked you three times to point it out and/or detail it, you have still failed to do so; you continue arguing despite failing to come up with a single source or reference.

Three times I've asked you to describe what you mean by "Traditional Samsung lag", your responses so far have been:

- "It doesn't happen on iPhone"
- "You're probably used to it if you've only used Samsungs. Try an iPhone"
- "Even if you've used other phones you can still be wrong or mistaken."
- "Samsung owners can't bare to have their precious devices criticised"

If that isn't fanboyism I don't know what is.

Meanwhile I'm still trying to figure out what you mean by "traditional Samsung lag" but it seems you're incapable of answering...

A quick Google search on iPhone lag, Blackberry lag, and Windows Phone lag shows it can be a problem too, but that still doesn't mean all these devices share "traditional lag". We know all devices have isolated cases of lag, but to call it traditional implies a systematic problem.

Interestingly enough, there are:
0.8 million Google results for "Huawei lag" (9% market share)
9.2 million Google results for "Samsung lag" (21% market share)
82.3 million Google results for "iPhone lag" (14% market share)

By that reckoning iPhones have 14x times as much "traditional lag" as Samsungs do, while Samsungs lag 5x more often than Huawei's.

Course, scientifically speaking this "evidence" is paper thin but it's still more than Russ has bothered to post, which is amounts to "non-iPhone owners are mistaken"

Now an actual description of a real phenomenon! I've observed the S4's background media scanner had a particularly bad habit of it, though it didn't "run away" it did often take 15-30 minutes+ to complete. I just switched it off.

iOS has always had somewhat better app management, in the early days simply by not being capable of multitasking at all. The upshot of the freedom you get on Android is some apps and manufacturers can do it badly, but Sony phones in particular are a lot better at managing it.
