UK jobless rate now heading to a 40-year low

Quote:

Over the last five years, Cameron has overseen more job creation than any other peacetime Prime Minister. And he did this in a bust, not a boom. He cut taxes for employers, and for employees. He reformed welfare. Result: the greatest job-creation boom in UK history. Employers are so keen to hire that there are now more job vacancies than ever before.............the lowest jobless levels since the 1970s. And still the Prime Minister whose policies have brought this is neck-and-neck with one of the least popular Opposition leaders in recent history

They were going to abolish the 10p tax band just to irritate the poor but that closet Tory Gordon Brown beat them to it. :D

Pay growth remains low and half the jobs have gone to foreign born immigrants. Kinda takes the gloss of it imo, still it is an achievement, of sorts.

Well, there wouldn't have been so many immigrants here in the first place if it wasn't for Labour and as for 'pay growth', some job is better than no job.
Plus, if "Employers are so keen to hire that there are now more job vacancies than ever before" then there is an upward pressure on wages, so wages will rise.
That's what happened in Germany. The govt allowed employers to hire and (more importantly) fire, at will. That created more jobs and demand for workers.

Too true. It really is just another example of Labour's duplicity for them to try to absolve themselves of responsibility for the entirely predictable effects of the uncontrolled mass migration they unleashed upon the UK. They didn't give two hoots for the poor, low skilled indigenous workers who'd have to compete with cheaper foreign labour. Labour the party of the working man? Do me a favour. Labour is the party of unemployment and benefits culture.

Remind me what Dave "no ifs no buts" Cameron said he was going to do about immigration and what he's actually done about immigration?

Cheers

He's achieved sweet FA but that's what getting out of the EU would sort out - something Labour's social engineering dept. would never even countenance. They won't even give us a referendum on the subject so it's clear to me which is more credible on the subject. Labour had a deliberate policy of mass migration, they opened the floodgates and they knew how hard it'd be to close them.

And you truly believe Dave wants anything to change? IF we get a referendum he'll make sure he gets the result he wants, he so nearly screwed it up the last time he had one he'll make sure it goes his way next time.

I know you'll find it hard to believe but not everthing you consider to have gone wrong in the last 115 years has been the fault of Labour.

Cheers

If you add to list those that cannot be on the list, it will be through the roof.

Who signed us up to Europe in the first place and knew exactly what the grand plan and ramifications were all along. As usual if someone want to address an issue or look deeper at the 'facts' someone else will be along in moments to play party politics, might be why nothing ever gets done in this country.

With regard to pay we'll have to wait and see, I'm not to hopeful personally. The fact half the jobs have gone to immigrants means the pay will invariably be low or the bare minimum and the prevalence of zero hour contracts means it unlikely anyone can guarantee getting a living wage out of it.

Indeed. You find yourself wondering why the tax take continues to disappoint so much and prove so problematic as far as cutting the deficit further goes if everything in the labour market is so marvellous.

Again, the reason we have so many migrants is because of Labour. Do you remember a figure of 13000 being quoted by Labour back then? As an aside.....I said it was rubbish back then and was called a racist here. I notice that Labour have since apologised for their 'miscalculation' on immigration. I've not yet had an apology from our left wing members for them calling me a racist. :dozey: .
Again, the equivalent of zero hours contracts has dug Germany out of a hole and made it a booming economy. Give it time.

They also have the Euro making their exports way cheaper than they should be, and fiscal transfers lending other EU countries money to buy their exports.

It seems absurdly simplistic to suggest that zero hours contracts made Germany a booming economy. Internal devaluation and the Euro seem rather to blame as well.

We can't follow this formula.

The Tories rejected attempting to rebalance the economy for fear of losing votes so our current account deficit is massive.

Despite claiming that they would aim for price stability the Tories are throwing public money at house prices for political reasons while Germany kept them relatively stable.

Our currency floats so we won't internally devalue, and external devaluation failed to make much of a dent in our current account deficit as everyone else was doing it at the same time.

Our issue is one of productivity. Zero hours contracts will make that worse, not address it. The kind of employees who produce won't tolerate zero hours. The French produce as much in 4 working days as we do in 5. We have given up hopes of an efficient, productive workforce in favour of pretty looking employment numbers. The income tax take reflects this with a very high employment rate and abysmal income tax take.

We need smarter, more efficient work, not more of it. We need more investment in R&D, more investment in science by the government, less borrowing by corporations to fund share buybacks and individuals to fund unproductive investment in property.

Of course the necessary actions to do this wouldn't make for good politics, so good luck seeing that any time soon.

Yes it makes *unemployment* figures look great, but it's just an illusion.

I couldn't care less about the last 115 years - I'm worried about the damage they did last time out which is going to cost us dear for the next 115 years, socially and economically. I'll believe the referendum if it happens but at least he hasn't ruled it out like Labour.

You 'know' what I think eh? No you don't, you just think you do. Just to educate you one more time, I don't think everything is Labour's fault and have said that before but that fact won't stop me reminding people of the things which were most definitely their fault as recently as 1997-2010 when they had an enviable parliamentary majority and were spending money faster than they could print it. Just to be clear, these would be the things mentioned in my signature, amongst many others there wasn't space for. Perhaps you think they're someone else's fault and that Bliar and Brown had nothing to do with selling our gold reserves, Iraq, pension raids, 10p tax rate, PFI excess, social engineering., etc. etc. etc. Perhaps you think operating in coalition with people diametrically opposed to each other is somehow easier than having a cast iron majority. I don't. Labour inherited a good economy and had it all but cocked things up right royally through a combination of lies, duplicity and good old fashioned ineptitude. For that I will judge them very harshly.

I'm really sorry if you've forgotten all those 'little mistakes' but I haven't and it'll be a hell of a long time before they get my vote again, if ever.

I see you too think everything which has gone wrong over the last 115 years is Labour's fault.

Don't wait for those apologies mate - insults are what people who have no arguments rely upon. Labour couldn't even be honest about that - they called it a 'mistake' until the real policy (social engineering) was exposed. You get what you see with a 'Typical Tory Toff' - with Labour what you get is a rank hypocrite secretly aspiring to be exactly the same...
