Rewriting critical functions more efficiently could do a lot but it'll never happen as the push is always for more bells and whistles and to be rolled out yesterday. |
Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
Tivo rocks compared to what Sky offers its customers.......

I am surprised to say the least. I didn't realise the deal was expiring as I thought it had several years still to run. Be interested what the City bods say to LG at the next quarterly meeting. |
Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
So what's Horizon like?
|
Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
.... no idea, I've never seen it beyond the pics/vids available on the internet.
It looks like open media software such as Kodi or Media Portal. So, based on that, it looks good. But until/if it comes to the UK, we won't know. |
Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
I've just had a google and found this video showing it off:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzHF2P2ZeeY I have to admit, it does look nice. I get why they called it Horizon. It seems nippy, not sure I like the layout but its at least faster than TiVo by a mile. The owner of that states it has 4 Ethernet ports. I can't even fathom why you'd want 4 Ethernet ports unless it was also the router/hub. That I don't like. |
Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
.... It does look good and yes it is a router too because unlike VM, the Horizon box is used to stream channels to mobile devices, pcs etc. Whereas on VM, they come off the headend.
I've used my own media software for years and its superior to tivo in every way. But the only way to get the HD channels from VM is to have their damn box, I can't just feed the channels through to my own setup. |
Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
Now if virgin did offer it that would be a game changer broadband and TV in one box compare to separate internet and TV box now

It's also important to note that LGI has just over a million Horizon customers throughout Europe whilst VM has just over 2.5m Tivo customers. Think I prefer the look of the Tivo box over the Horizon box but the Horizon box seems smaller. |

as heero states bloated software on an inadequate CPU , absolutely terrible user experience. |
Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
I dont think there is much difference between sky+ and tivo, both do similar stuff. Does Iplayer work on sky?
|
Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
My experience with both Sky HD and Tivo are largely similar. The interface is slow. I can't comment on layout and features too much because the glaring issue for me has always been how slow the interface is.
A raspberry Pi running XBMC/Kodi runs rings around both. A raspberry Pi 2 with Kodi is absolutely stellar. |

All that power wasted by bad coding. :( |
Re: Virgin Media and TiVo sign new deal
Sounds like it's fairly comparable to a gen1 Raspberry PI, then. It should definitely run better than it does, from the sounds of it.

Very true , TiVo is so far behind Horizon. Virgin must have a great price if they feel that it is the box they want to use |
