Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media Extra

Well, that added a bit of excitement to a boring old Friday!

Media Boy, have you heard when the All 4 replacement for 4OD is going to be added to our TIVOs?

.

http://www.brandrepublic.com/article...ital-service-4

Channel 4 to drop 4oD for digital service All 4

Channel 4 is dropping its catch-up service 4oD for a new online destination called All 4, which will host all of Channel 4's linear channels, digital content and services.

The All 4 brand will replace the eight year old 4oD brand on all platforms from the end of the first quarter, 2015.

The digital interface will archive Channel 4 content into three categories – On Demand (past), Now (present) and On Soon (future).

On Demand will house all of Channel 4’s catch up content and its archive – integrating all available programme related information such as cast interviews and galleries with on-demand content for the first time.

Now will be where viewers can watch live broadcasts from all Channel 4’s channels and engage with a range of content experiences which are of-the-moment – e.g. interactive content formats, news clips, short form videos and social media feeds.

On Soon will showcase new programme clips and promos allowing viewers to set reminders and alerts for future shows to drive awareness of upcoming content – and watch a selection of exclusive episode premieres before their linear TV broadcast.

All 4 will launch initially on PC and iOS devices before being extended to other digital platforms across 2015.

Channel 4’s newly launched ‘Shorts’ programmes will be tightly integrated across all three states, with Shorts additionally available in a dedicated Shorts hub.

Drawing on Channel 4’s database of more than 11 million viewers (which now includes 1 in 2 of all 16-34 year olds in the UK), All 4 promises to surface an increasingly bespoke set of content and related experiences for viewers.

David Abraham, chief executive of Channel 4, said: "Having been a pioneer of VoD services in the UK, we think the future of TV viewing lies not with either linear or on-demand, but a creative and visual integration of the two worlds, blending the strengths of both into a single brand.

"We believe All 4 will deliver the most advanced broadcaster response to changing viewer behavior in the digital age, and will help ensure that our content portfolio remains an important, valued part of viewers’ TV consumption for decades to come."

Keith Underwood, director of strategy and technology at Channel 4, added: "We want to evolve our digital estate to reinforce the online association with our linear channel brands and to provide a broader range of content experiences in an increasingly personalised manner.

"This is a significant change programme which will be delivered iteratively over the next year."

Best thing to say when faced with critisism for being kind enough to pass on info.

Now confirmed: Lamhe will close down completely on EPG number 811 from 1 April and be replaced by &TV from 6 April.

I don't mind critism tbh mate it just goes straight over my head lol, i'm happy in the knowledge that my predictions and rumours have happened on a average of 93%.

Any news of when these Opera Apps are going to launch on Tivo as reported last year. It was supposed to be after the software update but we had that ages ago.

You have to remember that customers and Virgin have different definitions of coming soon.

Customers: Within the next 2 months
Virgin: Within the next 2 years

As far as I'm aware, VM have never given any indication of timescale for Opera Apps. What's your source, Den?

l am just stating the obvious fact that from Virgins actual comments on this which was a long time ago we do seem to have to wait a inordinately long time before actual plans come to fruition SP.

With Sky and BT both due to launch new STB's in the summer, VM ought to have something up their sleeves or are gonna get left behind yet again. I know Sky's is supposed to be 4K ready and also have a cloud based storage for recordings so you can watch them anywhere (TV Anywhere you say!) via Sky Go.

Both Sky and BT also seem to be aggressively seeking new customers with half price deals, free sport, etc. Be interesting to see how VM react (if in fact they even do!).

I doubt Virgin have anything new up their sleeves other than trotting out the usual ` record 3 channels on tivo unlike skys box,not efected by the weather and `free repairs``. Hope I`m proven wrong though.

They do have a new tivo in the pipeline but no dates given as to when it'll arrive.

Sky's was originally due 2016 but BT have forced their hand by introducing BT Sport in 4K for next season. Sky are reactive to the competition whereas VM always seem to run to their own timescale regardless.

I'm hoping the new Sky STB is out by July as I'm planning on switching my TV over to Sky so it would be great to get the latest STB with cloud recordings.

What makes you think you need a new Sky box for the forthcoming cloud facility ?

The honest answer is I don't know whether you do or you don't, just in the articles I've read mention cloud recordings alongside the new STB.

I'd be very surprised if a new tivo appeared unless it was just one with a larger hard drive.

Liberty, in conjunction with Comcast, are working on the next generation stbs and software and I'd imagine tivo would be jettisoned as part of that project. Details of which I have posted on this forum before.

Not 100% certain but haven't Sky recently enabled their boxes so you can view photos from your mobile or tablet via your sky+hd box?

It is 100% happening the source is very very reliable. It could be that stb that you're on about though as no timeframe has been given yet.

It's all very well being 4k ready, I'm sure people will buy into it more than 3d etc. But all the research I can find (I'm in the market for a new telly!) suggests that I won't actually see much difference when you take into account viewing distance, screen size etc. Has anyone here got any out of the showroom experience?

We cant reveal the numbers yet as they are testing under "V0--".

Joking aside, Universal HD would be good though, Bates Motel starts again very soon, could even be Wednesday.

Obviously any new STB will be 4K capable and will include cloud functionality but I'm pretty sure both Sky and VM's current STB's will work with the cloud facility.

Sky has over 6 million users with Sky+HD and VM has over 2.5 million TiVo customers it would be crazy if cloud functionality didn't work with these.

The days of selling expensive box upgrades are coming to an end in my opinion , both Sky and VM are fighting for their lives just to keep their current customers I'm not sure people are as prepared to pay for expensive STB's these days.

And in a way, Sky has already moved in this direction, Now Tv being the example. They can do this because they have strong tie in with other channels as well as content provider of their own making.

This is where in some ways I do fear for virgin as a TV provider in this field.
