Church of England calls for 'fresh moral vision' in British politics.
"The Church of England has launched a strongly worded attack on Britain’s political culture, criticising all parties for offering only “sterile arguments” that are likely to make voters more apathetic and cynical in the runup to the general election.
In an unprecedented intervention, the church’s bishops have published a joint open letter warning that “our democracy is failing” and attacking the “growing appetite to exploit grievances” and “find scapegoats” in society. They called for “a fresh moral vision of the kind of country we want to be”. It is the first time the bishops have intervened in this way ahead of a general election, but one said the church had felt the need to counter the “sex appeal” of people like Russell Brand, who have argued that people should disengage from Westminster politics. The bishops insisted that the letter was not targeted at one party in particular, but the 52-page document can nonetheless be read as an indirect criticism of the government’s welfare reforms." No only about a third of the population.

This thread has potential based on previous 2 posts.
The C of E are more than welcome to their opinion, of course, and have every right to publish it. |

in 2014 it was reported as being down to 800,000. In 2008, 22.2% identified themselves as anglican, even though most of them wouldn'tknow what the inside of a church looked like and I would summise that the decline has continued. So I think your claim of a "third" of the population is slightly wide of the mark. |

Official figures from 2005 show there are 25 million baptised Anglicans in England and Wales. The population of the UK is around 60 to 70 million. Unless you've heard from each of those 25 million and have been told they have no further affiliation with the C of E perhaps your maths may require brushing up. |
Re: Church of England calls for 'fresh moral vision' in British politics.
Well I'm not going to argue too late into the night.
But if you take figures of mainly infants that had no say in the matter when they were indeed baptised, then more fool you. I was baptised Roman Catholic, but I am not so now I am an adult and can make my own assessment. Results of a Social Trends survey in 2008, 3 years after yours, put the % of those that call themselves Anglican at 22.2% And as widely reported practising Anglicans are as low 800,000. So rather than brushing up on mathematics, I would suggest you need to brush up on reality. |
Re: Church of England calls for 'fresh moral vision' in British politics.
You may benefit from brushing up on reading what I actually said.
Did I say "people who attend church every sunday"? Did I say "people who practise all the teachings of C of E"? No, I said its followers. Those who take an interest. I agree it's too late to argue, especially when there is nothing to argue about. |
Re: Church of England calls for 'fresh moral vision' in British politics.
A lot of people class themselves as C of E. (for religious form purposes)
but many many many are not infact religious in any way. this is down to being dumb. thinking that because they're British they must be C of E. idiots. I strongly suspect that the C of E option is a ploy. makes the numbers up. |
