Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

Having them delivered some time today and wondering if I have to install and activate them both at the same time or whether I can sort the Tivo out then tackle the superhub?

I'll be replacing a Samsung STB and old cable modem connected to a Netgear router with the above and all I've been told is that they have to 'activated' after connection in order to work.

Are there any simple do's/don'ts for me to bear in mind before getting started? I have no idea what the setup will involve - the CS rep made it all sound very simple but I have no idea if that's a fair representation of the reality.

As regards the Superhub, I set up a password on my Netgear router, will I need to do the same thing and how do I go about that?

TIA as always.

I went through this process a few weeks ago. You have to call them up before connecting anything new. I hadn't even disconnected the old equipment. Make sure that the Tivo and Superhub are to hand. They will ask for the serial number of the Tivo and the MAC address of the superhub. The superhub has a default username and password. I encountered no problems with the process.

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

It is an easy process, but it may well not let you do one without the other. To avoid losing your broadband, I'd suggest you don't start until you are ready to do both.

Cheers for that. How long did it all take? Just want an idea of how much time I'll need to set aside.

Not sure about the Tivo but the SH phone call should be automatic, you just dial the phone number and that should activate it for you, i had it wired in but switched it on when it told me it was activated.

spiderplant 13-01-2015 12:40

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

TiVo takes about half an hour to be up and running once you've powered it up. But make the phone call to activate it first.

But you can go off and do something else while it initialises.

It's arrived and I have the Superhub 2 ac. Will have a read through the stuff and probably start setting it all up tomorrow morning so if anyone has any other thoughts/suggestions feel free to let me know.

Cheers as always. :tu:

Hopefully the stuff that came with it tells you all you need to know. But I'd be very interested in your feedback in how it went.

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

Oddly I've been having a few intermittent connection problems over the last couple of days - it's happened 3-4 times today already but the connection is usually restored after a short while without me doing anything. Thinking about my impending installation, I just rang 150 to see if there was a known fault in my area but nothing was mentioned in the automated spiel so I guess the problem is very localised or with my old equipment somewhere. The automatic connection check revealed nothing either but I got the standard 'reset the modem' which I'm just about to do. Maybe my old stuff knows it's about to be replaced. What do you think?... :)

Hard to say. It could be one of many different things. I suggest you wait until you've got the new kit in and see how it goes.

Just plug in the SH2ac and dial the activation number then put in your wireless password, it will take you 10mins, very easy to do. :)

There's no technical reason that you'd have to upgrade them at the same time, just like there's no reason you and your neighbors all have to upgrade at the same time.

I suspect the phone menus don't let you choose which equipment to activate. Everything in the order gets done at the same time. So not a technical reason, but just how it's designed.

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

Just connected the TIVO - the hardest part so far was untangling and sorting out the myriad wires behind the cabinet emanating from the TV, STB, VHS player, DVD player/recorder, HDD Recorder, Hifi system and CCTV system. I can see life on the TV screen however so all appears to be going well... :erm:

Will head off to swap the modem shortly so if you don't hear back from me for some considerable time you'll know it wasn't quite the 10 minute job predicted... :)

You may get a "Network Availability C133" error on the TiVo Home screen. Don't worry if you do - it's a current system outage. It's being worked on.

Thanks for the help and feedback guys. :tu:

I'm finally connected via the 2ghz setting using the password on the bottom of the Superhub2. I have no instructions re. how to change that password and the SSID to something I recognise better so could anyone enlighten me please.

The Tivo seems to be working OK but it'll be a while before I'll be fiddling too much with it. I'll report any issues when I've had more time.

Will we have to do a reboot to sort it out once its fixed?

Type in 192.168.100.1 in a browser and that will bring up the Super Hub access menus. From there you can do those things.

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

Well I seem to be getting some wildly different speeds according to this test:

http://www.which.co.uk/technology/co...et-connection/

Anything from low single figures to just over 20mbits but with usually the upload or download speed being a lot higher than the other rather than both roughly the same. Not sure if that's to be expected though. The best numbers I got were achieved with my laptop in the same room as the Superhub. Nothing even approaching 152mbits yet but I'll repeat the tests and probably move the hub around a bit to see what, if any, difference that makes.

If I connect the laptop via Ethernet and do the test, would I expect a significant increase in speed?

If your using 2.4ghz you have not got a chance of 152meg, wired or on 5ghz is best for speed

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

First off if you're doing a speedtest via wireless then obviously the max speed of your wireless card will have some affect, connecting via ethernet will see if this is true.

You should try a better speed test as the 1 you posted is useless on my connection.

Thanks guys. The speed issue isn't a big thing - I've been happy enough on 20mb and getting only a fraction of that for ages. I just wondered what sort of increase I might see.

I'm going to try the Ethernet option just out of interest but it'll have to wait.

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

OK well I tried the speedtest again using my admin account and this time it worked so I guess the internet settings on my user account must be different. I got a speeds in the low single figures with the laptop in my usual location but then moved into the hall and the numbers went up massively. The last test I did gave:

Ping - 15ms
Upload - 44mb
Download - 49mb

I then repeated a couple of mins. later in the exact same location and got:

Ping - 35ms
Upload - 12mb
Download - 16mb

Then again and got:

Ping - 50ms
Upload - 12mb
Download - 45mb

Quite a variation.

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

Now try Ethernet, that will tell you if your connection speed is ok. :)

Pick the best closest server too.

I suspect some of your wireless devices will be limiting your speed.

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

And I thought that it takes a few days for it to settle, or that is what Virgin told me anyway.

I get a speed of around 35 MB a second wireless and around 168 MB a second ethernet connection.

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

Well I'm still here folks but having a few issues...

Is it possible to extend the coaxial cable running to the superhub from outside? If so, how? When I was using a cable modem and separate router, the combined length of wiring meant I could locate the router it in a better position to give a good signal throughout the house. Now I have the Superhub the available locations are much more limited and I'm finding that the signal in certain rooms is not so good.

Ps - why are the TIVO display lights sooooooo dim? We can hardly see them.

nomadking 18-01-2015 22:05

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

You can still use a separate router with the Superhub. That should give the same layout as before. You can even still use the wireless signal from your router and not from the Superhub. You have the option of switching the Superhub into modem mode. That is where it acts just like a modem with only 1 port active and no wireless.

To save power. Although the saving is less than a Watt, multiply by 2.5 million TiVos and it makes a big difference.

People used to moan that the display on the V+ HD was too bright lol.

It would be better if there was a 3 step brightness choice, two of my TiVos seem to have brighter LEDs than the other. Think its between the two makes of boxes.

TVM guys.

Ours is a Samsung 500mb box and honestly in daylight, the lights are invisible and at night they're only just. Not a major issue however.

As regards using the old the modem, it's a cheapish Netgear wnr1000 v.3 (N150) so would reconnecting that adversely affect the wireless speeds?

nomadking 19-01-2015 12:54

Re: Help - new Tivo & Superhub installation

You could still use the superhub wireless as well as using your old router for the wired connections. It would mean setting up your wireless devices to connect to the superhub instead of your old router.

While on the other hand they put ridiculously bright lights on the Superhub 1 and make it take 5 watts more power than it needs. Multiply that by 2.5 million Superhubs and any savings from TiVos are wiped out a dozen times over.

The Superhub's wireless should theoretically be up to twice as fast as your old router.

What was your old modem and STB?

You should either have a returns label in the pack to send back the kit if Virgin Media want it back, or instructions on your local recycling centre that accept electrical kit if they don't (WEEE takeback scheme)

It's not just a matter of putting it in an envelope and in a post box. A courier would have to be involved.

Returns are via Collect+ in the box the new kit came in.

If for whatever reason you've got kit that VM want back and you don't have a returns label then Customer Services can arrange for a replacement label to be posted out.

It's a Samsung STB and ancient cable modem. I was told I'd be contacted after the installation and be advised where to take the old kit to be returned to VM. There was no returns label in the box.

Virgin Media don't want the SH1's back which is why you won't get a label. You can take it to any local recycling centre, as Virgin Media are part of the WEEE's regulations DTS scheme.
