Panic Friday...
Quote:
Doesn't surprise me either. I was unlucky enough to be in our local Tesco a couple of weeks ago and witnessed a major and very unseemly scrummage over the reduced groceries section. Anyone would think these people were starving but the truth is they were mainly well dressed people filling their trollies with quite expensive branded products which had been reduced by a couple of pounds. Not exactly household necessities. The staff who'd been stacking the shelf were forced to retire and watch from a safe distance as people pushed, shoved and shouted in order to grab as much as they could. I'm wondering how long it'll be before someone is seriously injured or worse as a result of this sort of selfish behaviour and IMHO the stores must bear their share of responsibility for not adequately controlling the situation. |
Re: Panic Friday...
I was going to go to Tescos today but i will give it a miss i think as i can't even get on the Tesco Direct website!

They do it seriously over the water:

Re: Panic Friday...
I went to Game at midnight and there were about 40 or so people in the queue before me and at least the same number behind.
I got the Xbox One offer they had one and there were only 2 left after that. Most people were calm and friendly, the only annoying folk were the drunks that kept walk past asking what we were there for. Seen photos of the queues outside some supermarkets and its totally crazy. |
Re: Panic Friday...
We got some Black Friday deals but we did it in the comfort of our own home.
|
Re: Panic Friday...
Lots of press reaction to what happened in Tesco stores.... not a word about the other supermarkets.

Re: Panic Friday...
The Argos website was down earlier - too busy...

All this for £40 off an end of line TV...
|
Re: Panic Friday...
Frankly some of the behaviour l have seen on the TV news this morning is that of people who are deeply selfish and are prepared to do anything to get a bargain including fighting , trampling over other people and pushing disabled people out of the way and l find that appalling.

Re: Panic Friday...
I had a look at the halfords website today (my mum wants to buy my brother a satnav for christmas) there were a few discounts, but nothing more than 20 or 30%.

Re: Panic Friday...
Folks, it's worth bearing in mind that the "was" price only needs to have been offered for the same length of time as the "now" price. It's entirely possible that your mega black Friday bargain was only ever available at the higher price for 24 hours. ;)

Re: Panic Friday...
I got an Xbox one with Alien isolation for £269 from Amazon. I was quite happy with that deal.

Re: Panic Friday...
And again. how many millions of pounds worth of stock was taken out the front door, without going through the tills in all the chaos?
it was like a rehearsal for the riots again. |
Re: Panic Friday...
Probably not, as most medium to high value items have a security tag...

Like wild animals fighting over the best bits of a rotting carcass.
So Tesco are going to work with the police next time they do this. Well I hope they're going to foot the bill (no pun intended). The fact that they even have to contemplate wasting police time on people who are too stupid to exist is a pretty daming indictment. |
Re: Panic Friday...
Well I was out at the local shopping centre and saw no riots,no shoving,no abuse.I dropped by the 24/7 Asda later and again all was calm..and still plenty of 'bargains' available.:)
The media just love this stuff.;) |
Re: Panic Friday...
Shocking, it's like the zombie apocalypse, the great underclass of the UK leave the estate and descend upon the retail outlets of the country.

Re: Panic Friday...
Well I suppose it's a change from all those food banks we're told everyone's using...
|
Re: Panic Friday...
Greatly amused that the XBox One was in the Black Friday sales while I didn't see the PS4 in them.

Both were £299 and included two games Drive Club and Last of us Remastered for PS4 and Assassins Creed: Black Flag & Unity for the One bundle. Went past my local store today and it was only the PS4 one that was showing as sold out. I went for the One bundle as midnight buyers also got Forza 5 and Lego Marvel. |

That I don't watch TV, listen to radio or soak up many advertisements online due to ad blockers doesn't really help either. TV and radio are almost universally a pile of pap and online advertisements are a waste of bandwidth. |
Re: Panic Friday...
Their online pricing is now generally cheaper than in store and they are actively trying to do the right thing, however some of their new game prices are rather high.
They must be doing something right though as their stock price keeps rising. |
Re: Panic Friday...
Tesco dispatch times delayed :(

Re: Panic Friday...
I really think that Black Friday should be returned to America given the fighting over cut price TV's and the like.
Why can't we just do like we always did before this horrible American import? Stop globalisation now and go back to our own great British tradition ...... Shoplifting! |

Re: Panic Friday...
It's absolutely disgraceful and sickening...
These people are under mind control and have been brainwashed completely. Lacking any morality and putting materialistic obsession ahead of upholding civility. Its so sad to see people with their arms outstretched begging for this worldly life and its possessions. So much so that they're prepared to trample over fellow human beings without any remorse. Utterly selfish. The very root of social disorder. Sad sad sad... Where's the love we once shared? This is the work of satan Iblis who is succeeding in this part of the world as people have no faith any more so God can't protect them from this disease of the soul. May God uplift mankind in spirituality and elevate us beyond this lowly craving for mere objects to such an extent that we're prepared to fight over them. These are attributes of animals, hyenas! Heal our hearts, soul and mind... DID YOU KNOW: Black Friday stemmed from slavery? It was the day after Thanks giving when salve traders would sell slaves for a discount to assist plantation owners with more helpers for the upcoming winter (for cutting and stacking fire wood, winter proofing etc.), hence the name see you next year RUSS at car boot sale. |
Re: Panic Friday...
Think you will find that is nothing to do with black friday as we know it.
The earliest known use of "Black Friday" to refer to shopping on the day after Thanksgiving was made in a public relations newsletter from 1961 that is clear on the negative implications of the name and its origin in Philadelphia. Quote:
It was used by traffic police to refer to the amount of traffic on the roads. although over the years there are many other uses for the term black friday. Shopping related use only started in 1961. |

Re: Panic Friday...
Noted that on Amazon some "bargains" at 80% off were not 80% off the normal Amazon price but 80% off the "marked price" - RRP or whatever. If the normal Amazon price was already healthy the offer, while still present, was not as great as first appeared.

Re: Panic Friday...
In my area of North/Mid Wales "Black Friday" was the last working friday before christmas, whereupon you would find yourself heading towards the pub
|
Re: Panic Friday...

It was also used in Scotland to describe a huge brawl in Glasgow in 1919. The shopping term only started in 1961 as mentioned in my earlier post. |
Re: Panic Friday...
It's the same in real (South ;)) Wales too, Black Friday is the last Friday before Christmas and Wind Street in Swansea turns in to an alcoholic version of the Muppet Show.
