Will Caterham make it? - Pity Marussia couldn't be rescued as their 2 points would have earned them a better share.
2015 could be a crisis year for F1 ... will it bring 3 car teams, will another team sponsor follow Red Bull and run two teams |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Caterham have made it in to end of season testing - Will Stevens finished 6th on today's timesheet. Bottas topped it, but Vandoorne only managed 3 laps in the McLaren Honda.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Formula One Commission have formally dropped double points for next season, ruled out standing restarts following a safety car period and also decided not to restrict radio messages like in the latter part of 2014. Link is auf Deutsch...
http://m.auto-motor-und-sport.de/for...g-8892500.html |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Thank god double points have been dropped as whoever made that decision is a idiot who basically has no clue about the sport.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Well, common sense prevails all round it seems there!
Anyway, I know this is crazy, but I think I'll be putting a small wager on Alonso winning the WDC next year. I'll get great odds and while I would love to see Hamilton win a 3rd championship next year, it'll be fun to have Honda back at the top of the sport. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
On the basis of their end of season testing I wouldn't be hoping for too much from McLaren-Honda right away. Managing more than three laps would be progress from where they are right now!
So predicition time: I think we'll see a third championship from Hamilton next year in a car that will maintain a competitive advantage over most of the field and should benefit from improved reliability after a year of the new regs. That should mean he comfortably beats Rosberg who's best chance of a championship ended on Sunday, imo. Williams might take the odd win, and we can only expect improvement from Red Bull. If Massa can stay out of trouble I expect that he, Rosberg, Bottas and Ricciardo will fight it out for second place. Kvyat's an interesting proposition, but very raw. I think William's more experienced driver line up will see them be much closer to Red Bull in the constructor's championship. If they can pick up a couple of wins they could beat them in to second place. If that happens don't be surprised to see Mateschitz threaten to pull the plug and Horner go. I can't see the benefit in Ferrari having two drivers who've struggled with the new formula and, as ever, they are in transition having now got rid of Matiacci. The only point in their favour I can see is the rule change that means most teams will have to run a nose configuration that's closest to what Ferrari ran this year. I expect McLaren to start slowly but improve, and be comfortably ahead of Force India this time around, although Lotus will no doubt benefit from replacing McLaren as a Merc customer so I expect we'll see them back amongst the midfield as well. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
McLaren will be powered by Honda engines next season, Lotus will change from Renault to Mercedes engines, and despite Marussia provisionally being on the team list for 2015 under the name Manor F1, they will no longer be in F1.
And also the rolling restart after a Safety Car period will be scrapped, instead they will line up on the grid again and start as if it is the start of the race. Only exception will be if the race is in the last 5 laps and so will use the rolling restart. |

Jenson Button to partner Alonso next season according to the BBC.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
l am glad Button has been retained as if he had left F1 it would have been very disappointing to lose such a fine driver.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Let's hope that's the case. German Auto Motor und Sport are reporting that KMag has the drive http://m.auto-motor-und-sport.de/for...n-8924351.html and the Danish press have been invited to today's event, so until I hear it officially I'm not going to fully believe it, but it does seem hopeful.
Alonso v. Button has potential to be awesome, especially for those of us who feel disappointed at the way Alonos v. Raikkonen turned out this year. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
I was listening to 5Live this morning that made it sound like a done deal for Button.
Then listening to Radio 2 and heard that the Danish media were saying that Magnussen had it! I really want to see a Button vs Alonso fight next year, but we shall see. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
I am pleased, however if I was Button would I want to drive for McLaren now? The way they have dragged their feet over this and kept him guessing is just not good enough from one of the top 4 teams.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Alonso surely pulled his weight in this. I'd bet a bit that he had no intention of driving with young kev and avoiding another situation in which he was being bested by a youngster.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
if confirmed, it is the right decision.

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
KMag stays as test and reserve driver.
I should imagine Alonso would have wanted a clear 1st driver/2nd driver relationship, so I don't think this is his idea, but I'm sure Honda would want Button who's probably going to be the only driver on the grid next year who'll have a Japanese fan base. It's a good move for McLaren - they've got proven point scorers for next season. I think this'll be Button's last year and 2016 will see a year-old Honda with Alonso the main driver, Magnussen in the supporting role and a final tip at the driver's title for the Spaniard. Exciting. Massa this week has said he thinks Williams have got enough to allow him a shot at the title next year as well. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
MarkC1984 will be pleased to learn that Lewis Hamilton is Sports Personality of the year!
No Ryan Giggs this time around! |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Blow. No I am not happy, was wanting McIlroy to win instead. Don't like either of them but McIlroy was the lesser of the 2 evils. So a tax dodging arrogant person wins Personality of the Year? Idiots, the whole lot of you who voted for him to win.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Have you any proof that Lewis Hamilton was a tax dodger Mark?.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
He's a British citizen who moved to Monaco/Switzerland. Ergo, he doesn't pay full tax to the Government. Ergo, he is a tax dodger.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
But then he earns money from at least the 19 countries which hold races, as well as those that don't but which provide revenues to f1, why would we, the UK, be entitled to a full share of the tax revenues on those earnings?
Personally, whether you like him or not, Hamilton will end his career as the best British driver ever. I think the Sports Personality is a silly award, but it's given by the British Broadcasting Corporation and its right that somebody who is proud to represent the UK has been recognised in this way. |

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Nope, it is a grump an hour for me atm. Hate this time of year, it always makes me so depressed. Anyway, back on topic. Updated list of drivers for next season.
Caterham: TBA & TBA Ferrari: Sebastien Vettel & Kimi Raikkonen Force India: Sergio Perez & Niko Hulkenberg Lotus: Romain Grosjean & Pastor Maldonado Manor: TBA & TBA McLaren: Fernando Alonso & Jenson Button Mercedes: Nico Rosberg & Lewis Hamilton Red Bull: Daniel Ricciardo & Dannil Kvyat Sauber: Marcus Ericsson & Felipe Nasr Toro Rosso: Max Verstappen & Carlos Sainz Jr. Williams: Felipe Massa & Valtteri Bottas Apparently, Manor GP is the Marussia team from last season. Apparently that was the name of Marussia when founded in 2010 before being known by other names. No idea whether they will get the extra funding and bump up the pits from the 2 points scored last year by Marussia. Also Caterham have been given permission to race in 2015 with their 2014 cars while a buyer for the team is found. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Manor is what was rebranded Virgin, before becoming Marussia and eventually went out of business. Officially their entry has now lapsed and certainly Sauber are pressing very hard for their share of Marussia's prize money. Even if Marussia are able to re-enter it will be with a new entry and, as a result, it's not clear that they would be due any prize money from this season.
Personally I think they had a smaller operating budget than any other team, missed three races and still beat two teams so they should be rewarded accordingly, but reading between the lines I think they are, sadly, done. Caterham appear to have a slightly better chance, but it still doesn't look good. Kobayashi has moved on to another series as well. |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Ferrari have confirmed Esteban Gutierrez as test and reserve driver.
I guess he has recent experience of a bad car with a Ferrari engine, but even so... |
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Final calendar has been announced now. It sees the return of the Korean GP.
15 March: Australia 29 March: Malaysia 12 April: China 19 April: Bahrain 3 May: South Korea TBC 10 May: Spain 24 May: Monaco 7 June: Canada 21 June: Austria 5 July: Britain 19 July: Germany 26 July: Hungary 23 August: Belgium 6 September: Italy 20 September: Singapore 27 September: Japan 11 October: Russia 25 October: USA 1 November: Mexico 15 November: Brazil 29 November: Abu Dhabi Korean GP is on there as a provisional race. Also some rule changes. The double points is scrapped. In the event of a race being suspended, the pit exit will be shut and cars are to proceed slowly to the pit. The first car into the pits must go to the exit remaining in the fast lane and form the front of a queue. And in what must be a first, any equipment and/or personnel on the track after the 15 second warning has been given, the driver of the car concerned must then start the race from the pit lane. Failure to do so will result in a 10 second stop and go penalty. |

He's right in that this is the way for a small or start-up team to get by, but I thought the point of his operation was to sell his machine tools. Not much of a marketing ploy to say that all your stuff is made by other people! Still, I think the decision to base in Oxford, either at or near Marussia's factory is encouraging as it will presumably offer some of their employees new jobs. |

Are you thinking of Nick Fry?
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Possibly. Didn't really take too much notice of that whole spy thing.
|
Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Nick Fry was head of Honda who became Brawn and are now World champions Merc AMG. He apparently met both Mike Coughlan and Nigel Stepney after they'd been suspended/sacked by their teams, McLaren and Ferrari respectively in the aftermath of the affair, and had to deny publicly that he'd also received information.
Pat Fry was at McLaren during the affair, but as far as I know had no involvement with it, and the fact that he ended up at Ferrari probably confirms this. |

A Statement from the Bianchi Family | 30 December 2014
Nice, France The parents of Jules Bianchi, Philippe and Christine, would like to provide the following update regarding Jules' medical situation: "As we reach the conclusion of a difficult year for our family, we wanted to take this opportunity to provide a further update regarding Jules' medical situation, per our pledge to communicate continued information, when appropriate, to his many fans. "It was a significant and very comforting step for us to be able to bring Jules home to France last month, to continue his rehabilitation surrounded by his family and friends. This is very important for Jules and also for us. "Since that time, Jules has received the very best treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of Le Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice (CHU) and now at the CHU's rehabilitation centre for this kind of trauma. "Jules' neurological status remains unchanged; he is unconscious but able to breathe unaided. Whilst there is no significant information to report, we take a great deal of comfort from the fact that Jules continues to fight, as we knew he would, and this has enabled the medical professionals caring for him to commence the planned, but very painstaking, programme of rehabilitation therapy. "As we reflect on the events of the past few months, we would like to acknowledge once again the overwhelming warmth and affection shown towards our son. These continue to be challenging times for our family, but the knowledge that he has touched the lives of so many people all around the world has helped us through. "We would also like to acknowledge the respect and support shown by the media towards our family during this time, for which we are extremely grateful. "We will continue to provide information when it is possible to do so and our sincere appreciation to everyone who continues to pray for Jules." |

Re: Formula 1 2015 Season thread
Can't see it. Essentially all the time Bernie's in charge lucrative tv rights deals will win out over fta coverage, despite the resulting fall in viewer numbers. Race attendance is also a worry. Did you know that at every track on last year's (2014) f1 calendar which also hosted a round of the World Superbikes, the Superbikes had more people turn up! My son and I went to the 2014 British Grand Prix and it was an awesome event. But it cost me close to a month'a mortgage for the two of us, and he's 7. But he can't afford a Rolex so Bernie doesn't care about him, even though the sport could part him with his money for decades if they understood how important the future is. But the cost aside, if you're not generating interest through television exposure or online then you won't have people bothering to go to the races. At some point in the next few years I reckon we'll see a heritage race with empty stands and we'll realise it's too late - all the young people will be at the formula e. They won't care that we have the fastest cars and the best drivers, they'll just know that we weren't bothered enough to pay them any attention.

FIA Super Licence rules amendment
From 2016, drivers must have accumulated 40 points over a 3 year period. Points will be allocated dependent on which motor series they have taken part in, and levels of results achieved. Drivers must also be 18+, spent at least 2 years in junior single seater categories, hold a valid road driving licence and pass a test on the sporting regulations of F1. Existing requirement of 300 km in a recent F1 car remains in place. These rules mean that Max Verstappen would be ineligible for the 2015 season if the rules existed now. More details in the article: http://www.formula1.com/news/headlin...5/1/16755.html Virtual safery car rules finalised: http://www.formula1.com/news/headlin...5/1/16758.html Car launch dates Williams - Second pre season test in Barcelona (Feb 19) McLaren - Digital launch on Thursday January 29. Ferrari - January 30 Mercedes - First day of first pre season test (Feb 1) Force India - 21 January, broadcast live from the team's website from 1500 GMT |
