Cronyism at the council...

Yes it's Tower Hamlets, who'd have thought??!!!

Quote:

A report into allegations of fraud at Tower Hamlets Council reveals a "culture of cronyism", the government has said.

The investigation has prompted Community Secretary Eric Pickles to send in three commissioners to work at the council for three years.

Auditors said the council grant system lacked transparency and some groups got cash without applying for it.

The audit by PricewaterhouseCoopers found that £407,000 was handed to groups that did not meet the council’s own minimum criteria for funding.

And Poplar Town Hall was sold for £875,000 to a supporter of Mr Rahman even though the bid arrived late and was lower than other offers.

Be interesting to see how the Islamic Republic spin this one and how much taxpayers' money they spend on lawyers. Denial seems to be the MO so far.

Does America know about this, if so when does the bombing begin and if not let's tell them

I can think of no better fate for Tower Hamlets than to be flattened by American war planes. :D

Ken Livingstone's thoughts:

http://www.itv.com/news/london/2014-...tower-hamlets/

Easily explainable with a read of http://www.standard.co.uk/news/mayor...t-7443786.html

He probably sees Lutfur as a kindred spirit.

Well, let's face it, Red Ken's political history since the days of Lambeth and the GLC to his terms as Mayor of London has been littered with similarly controversial stuff.

For anyone who's too young to remember it all:

If it turns out to be as bad and as blatant as it seems, I wonder whose heads, if any, will roll and what will be done to prevent this sort of thing happening again.

It was no real surprise to see Gorgeous George and Red Ken lining up with Mayor Rahman. No doubting where their political priorities lie.

Andrew Gilligan has been going after Rahman like a rabid dog for months now. He's had another go in the Tele today:

"Lutfur Rahman: is he the biggest liar in London?" ... don't hold back, will you Andrew ... :erm: :D

I wonder if Red Ken Livingstone and George Galloway will now rethink their previous comments and support for this guy...

Respect MP George Galloway described action taken against Lutfur Rahman as “a racist, Islam-hating witch hunt against the most popular and best mayor in the country”.

Galloway, a former MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, also praised the mayor’s provision of free school meals and educational maintenance allowance – a grant scrapped across the UK in 2011 – for Tower Hamlets residents.

He added: “Labour should be beating a path to mayor Lutfur’s door and asking him to sprinkle some of his stardust over them instead of expelling him, witch-hunting him and trying to drive him from office.”

Ken Livingstone also spoke in support of the mayor and expressed his hope that Rahman would run as a Labour mayoral candidate in the next election.
And to think there were those who actually voted for Ken Livingstone to run London! The mind boggles... :spin:

Ked Livingstone's just been defending Rahman on Iain Dale's show on LBC. I'd find it laughable had I not experienced this guy's loony antics ever since his days at Lambeth and the GLC.

Anyone who fancies listening ought to find it here:

If we were to know just how many people in power were corrupt and being fraudulent.
and if we were to know just how many millions of pounds have been stolen.
and if we were to know just how deep and far it extends to.

we'd be enquiring as to how we go about joining in.

While I would certainly not go so far as to suggest Ken would ever indulge in corruption himself, it's perhaps worth pointing out that he may not be as great a judge of character as he appears to think.

I hope the fallout to this will include an inquiry into what the police were up to during the period in which all this was apparently going on and whether there are any similarities between other notable failures.
