Nice if you can get it, although (upload aside) if FTTP gets people only just faster than VM's current 152mb tier I think they have little to worry about going forward!

Telford, while those screenshots do appear legit (guys, check the image source in your browsers, it is speedtest.net), it's worth remembering that Trials do not necessarily turn into a full service.

If they did, a lot of Virgin customers would have the option of 1.5GBps by now.

that's old news in 2011 and it now 2014 and I don't think virgin media will never bring out 1.5Gbps down with 150Mbps up. Never will. They probably stick with 152/12 for two more years!

Probably is legit but don't always trust speedtest.net. After having some weird results that said I was in a military data centre rather than with Sky, I did some tests found that you could make the speedtest site say you was anywhere by changing HTTP headers. The results for those graphics is stored as you being wherever you spoofed. I know it makes no sense but can reproduce it at will.

If someone really thinks they need faster than 50Mbits, they are probably the kind that should have a remote server downloading for them these days :p:

But what a silly claim!, It just used the PN IP at that time.

Just to show it's possible, this is me doing a speedtest from Virgins Knowlsley vlan right now. To be specific, if you look at the IP in the first image you can check out it belongs to shop.virginmedia.com. The second image is on the speedtest server and you can see matches the url in the screenshot. Just a shame the speedtest looks so bad but other traffic must be active on my network :p:

The trick used is a good way of not appearing in some web server logs, even if you are not using a proxy or vpn....

What i'm saying is you can't completely trust a speed test even if the result is hosted on speedtest.net. I could use one of my gigabit servers to do the test and make it look like a sky result for example.

Even compression on some VPN servers can artificially make the results higher than they are. Still good for a guide when you trust the people posting them though.

Well this is one I did this morning, It's not a trick. I am using the same software. I did it to Oslo as that's a good server and a good distance.

I use the software to bonding together at my mate house with his FTTC 80/20 with his virgin media cable 100/10. He getting 178 down and 28 up.

I am thinking of going back to Virgin Media cable 161/12 and hook it up together with my Plusnet FTTC 74/18 and I probably getting 235 down and 30 up as it worth it with a one off lifetime for the software to bonding together.

To be fair to him the software we both use is only £8 for a lifetime key as they had a 70% sale on. You can get everything they do x3 for £12.

My order had been accepted by virgin media. They offering me 100/10 for 12 for 6 months then 22 a month for the remaining 6 months of 12 months contract. As they can't offer me discount for 152/12 sadly. Engineer coming this Friday to install virgin media with free superhub 2.

So, can't wait to hook up along with FTTC.

At those speeds it's hard to tell if the users hardware is the bottleneck, rather than the actual connection being slower. Decent network card and SSD can make a huge difference.

Is that a real home connection, work connection or edited values in flash memory?

I'm sure it should be possible to get way faster than that BT as well altho speedtest might struggle with faster connections.

Yeah, it took me about 40 minutes of fudging about and optimizing to get it up from the ~450Mbps earlier to the 1.2Gbps you see in that one :P Have to say even on a 4Ghz machine Flash and the browser used are both becoming big bottlenecks. Oddly enough in Firefox the test only returned ~250Mbps, in Chrome it'd go up to 500Mbps, yet in IE it did >1Gbps. If you have linux you can do it without using flash, like I did from my server

Knew flash was a resource hog but surprises me it a 4Ghz machine struggles.

It's possible to find and change the values in memory of flash programs quite easily, so I would expect it's easy to change the result the speedtest flash posts to the server to record. Not tried but if it works that way, probably easier to sniff the network traffic and make your own submission thinking about it.

Can't help it, mind is always thinking of vulnerabilities in web page implementations :p:

Btw, try faking your x-forwarded-for when you visit speedtest.net ;)

You are right as virgin media don't sell 100/10 anymore. They say I would get 100/6 instead. So, I change the order to have 152/12 instead. They going to sent me superhub 2 in the post and can activated it online myself. No need engineer tech guy. They offer me 152/12 for 28 for 12 months

Well, I admit to being a speed freak but that shouldn't harm anyone else. Plusnet have announced they are putting their line rental up again. This now takes a line and whatever FTTC speed I can get to over the 39 mark.

I have a 2 headed splitter coming in and I am going to ask if it is possible to have another superhub on it rather than all the tivo wiring it i has. If so great plusnet get dumped and VM come in - If not then I will stay as I am.

exactly, I think it is an absolute joke that we get moaned at for making "off topic" posts and they get deleted in threads (when they are perfectly harmless) yet telford is consistently allowed to come back and start new threads about crap which everyone knows not to be true.

Edit: sweet, it looks like they have disabled the swear filter for this thread so we can all accurately express our feelings. At least we know some of us will be speaking the truth :)

that's funny because I think they were rated No 1 for customer service last year or the year before. If they are owned by BT you would have thought somebody high up would want to know what they are doing and adopt the same principle in BT and other subsidiaries
