Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
Even though my laptop is only 20ft away (and two walls) from my Superhub 2 the normal speed I get on it is only about 10MB (one 5th of my desktop download). What can I do to speed it up?
|
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
The usual suspects to start with are
The wireless card (out of date drivers and/or a cheapo one, need make and model of card) Hub wifi not configured to allow high speed and/or using a very congested wifi channel. |
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
How thick are the walls, and what material are they?
In my office (a converted country house) the wifi won't penetrate two walls as they're thick stone built ones. |
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
yup, to elaborate on the above: forgetting about interference atm, you want to be checking that the shub is set to broadcast at 145mbits or higher/n (don't know what the exact settings are) and that the nic in your laptop can also support 802.11n. Depending on the age of the laptop it might be a "b or g" card.

Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
The Superhub 2 comes pre-configured to allow high speed.
I had a similar problem when I received my Superhub 2. As suggested earlier, it was my equipment at fault. The wireless card was wrongly configured, leading to lower speeds than it is capable of. I now get full download and upload speeds throughout my house on the 50Mb service. |
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
Help please. What do you mean "wireless card wrongly configured"? The superhub is set to choose a channel automatically: the laptop is a new Toshiba. Which card, where, which settings?
This morning I am only getting 7.95 MB. |
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
What speed do you get on wifi if the laptop is in the same room as the SH2?
|
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
On my desk next to the SH2 I get the full 50MB. On the dining table about 8ft and one wall away I get 46MB. At the end of the conservatory say 30ft and only one wall away I get about 15M. On my knee in the lounge about 20ft and two walls (though the lounge door pointing towards the SH2 is open) I get about 8-12MB depending on time of day.

Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
What are the walls made of?
Is it a modern house, with plasterboard walls, or an old house, with thick solid walls? It sounds as if it is distance/walls blocking the signal - if you want the full speed, try powerline plugs. |
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
if you have proven the laptop is capable of getting full speed next to the shub and it is distance/interference which is causing your speed loss then there aren't really any settings you can change which can improve this.
As Hugh suggested the only way you are going to get a faster connection is if you put the laptop closer to the wap again, and that is either put using powerline plugs in your conservatory or setting up another wireless router in there. |

For example if he's on 2.4Ghz and it's set to 144Mbps mode, changing it to 300Mbps could increase speed at a distance. If he's on 5Ghz then he may get better speed switching to 2.4Ghz and vice versa. I'm not sure what the OPs expectations are but we'd still need to know what wireless card he is using and what speed it reports being connected at. |
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
How can I change from 144Mbps mode to 300 Mbps mode? I cannot see the option in the Superhub settings.
|
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
Sign in to the Superhub then go into Advanced Settings then Wireless then Wireless Radio.
You can then change the speed. |
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
Thank you. That has boosted my lounge speed from about 10MB to 17MB (still well short of the 50MB though!). What sort of wifi speeds do people normally get?
|
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
Personally, I get the full speed, around 54Mb, on both my iPad on the 5GHz band and my PC on the 2.4GHz band.

Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
I get a solid 90Mbit+ on my Note 3 via 5Ghz when I'm upstairs (Router is downstairs). Wireless-N.

Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
So you have a floor in the way? Not quite the same as two walls, the latter involving the signal going through 20 times thicker material.
|
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
If you have a smartphone download the the app "Wifi Analyzer", I use this on my android phone and it tells me what channels are being used by my neighbours, it also will tell the the best one to use.
Another option is to buy a separate Router, I own the Asus RT-N66U which I have been able to hit 124Mb on my 120Mb connection. |

Mind you, the router sits beside a fireplace and the room upstairs is on the other side of said fireplace, so it's not quite just a floor, either. |
Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
Well that's slightly more of a challenge. But regardless Wifi is known to degrade rapidly over distance if walls are in the way, though everyone's mileage will vary depending on local conditions. One wall or floor is easy, even a router missing its antennae can deliver through that. However I find that two walls (and a requisite room in between) is pretty much the limit of reasonable usability in most deployments. Once you get to three typical walls and two rooms you're looking at slow/intermittent signal at best. But again that all varies according to equipment and local conditions. Annoyingly I find my mobile phone maintains the same performance at twice the distance compared to my flatmate's phones and laptops.

Re: Wired speed 50MB, WiFi speed 10MB
Yeah, it's entirely variable and depends on so many factors that it's impossible to say. Everyone has different walls, different floors, different equipment, different levels of interference.
