IIRC, at the time the name was changed, it was said that, whilst they wanted to push Pay TV on it, Sky were worried that the quality of this channel would put people off subscribing to Sky.

Is the rumour that Pick will revert to being called Sky 3, or do Sky intend to open another Sky 3 in addition to Pick?

MUTV won't be charging any extra for its HD variant so it will be expecting not to pay any extra to broadcast, as usual Sky can facilitate, Virgin can't.

I was the wee bit sad to see both Sky1 +1 and Pick +1 are not set to launch Virgin Media after all Virgin Media own Smallworld are broadcasting Sky1 +1 right now.

Economics. The cost of broadcasting on satellite or cable are fixed regardless of the number of viewers. LGI has far fewer potential MUTV subscribers than Sky. I calculate LGI to have a potential 840,000 and Sky 7m.

Here's the calculations:

Sky UK & Ireland has 10.6m TV customers.
VM UK has 3.8m and UPC Ireland fewer than 400,000 TV customers but let's generously call the total LGI customers 4.2m.

So already, Sky has 2.5 times more customers than LGI.
However, Sky's customers are overwhelmingly sports fans - two-thirds take Sky Sports (7m) whilst only 20% of LGI's (840,000) take Sky Sports. These people are far more likely to subscribe to MUTV than non-Sky Sports subscribers.

MUTV will have to pay for the extra capacity and an additional EPG fee for the HD slot on satellite. Perhaps Sky have helped with the start up costs and in return want an exclusivity period??

Sky were originally stakeholders in the channel (owning a third, alongside ITV and the club) and , despite having been bought out by MUFC, I should imagine the relationship is still good.

I don't agree until at least Sunday Manchester United via their website and their tv channel was advertising the HD channel as being available on VM, something changed and if we are waiting for VM to release a statement about it we will still be waiting this time next test. Also for a company that has a big presence in Ireland like liberty global they should know that a disproportionate amount of people subscribe to mutv compared to say Chelsea tv.
And to think I was nearly back at VM for my tv, their system and they run their company means that you are always going to get sloppy seconds.

I guess it all depends on "big presence".
If we take there to be 388,000 UPC Ireland subscribers of which 20% have Sky Sports, that gives us a figure of 77,600. If we assume that one in ten of these will subscribe to MUTV we get a figure of 7,760 subscribers. How much would you pay UPC Ireland for the privilege of broadcasting in HD if you were MUTV?

MB, do you know anything of a new TIVO update due soon?

I've just seen this and thought I'd share with you guys as I'm not sure if/when it will come to VM

http://www.engadget.com/2014/07/10/t...=rss_truncated

TiVo's Summer 2014 update makes it even easier to find something to watch

"Despite arriving nearly a year after the TiVo Roamio launched, this update looks to be one worth waiting for. To address the age old problem of choosing what to watch, TiVo has two new features that make that much easier...."

I didnt want to copy too much, so I've put the link in too.

You're not wrong, Vince. Virgin Media will let us have updates as it thinks appropriate! I think it might be a while before we see this one, but it would be nice. Hopefully some of the gliches that were thrown up with the last update will be resolved as well.

I really like the Tivo and all the functions that are on it, but since the last update, My Suggestions have been really strange. I don't bother with them anymore now really. That would be one thing I would like them to sort out.

I agree. VM were attempting to respond to those who were complaining about Suggestions, but they should have been ignored because all the complainants had to do was either ignore the folder or switch it off.

So when the new update is launched, I hope it will revert the Suggestions back to what they were, and also amend the glitch that throws your EPG back to the current page when you try to modify a series link a day or more in the future. This is really annoying and wastes so much time when you are making a number of entries.

I particularly like the ability to categorise your recordings on the American update. This makes trying to find the recording you are looking for much easier.

Yeah, before the last upgrade the Suggestions were pretty relevant to the programmes I was watching. Now I get all sorts of rubbish come up lol

I just delete them all, I guess I could just turn the feature off :)

If they could make the Tivo slightly quicker when moving between screens, that would also be a bonus ;)

That's a good question. I got one for capacity reasons, perhaps I wouldn't have bothered if that hadn't been an issue with v+hd. I'm glad I changed, though!

Woah, now that is a toughie. I have a V+HD box upstairs and I do find it quicker than the Tivo when moving between menus, but it is limitied in what it can do. For this reason I would stick with Tivo so I am able to access a lot more content (in HD) and Netflix.

That article mentions that those features are also coming to the US Tivo Premier, which the VM Tivo is based on, so it is possible that they could come to the VM Tivo. The last update we got was pretty much the same one the US Premier Tivo got about eight months earlier.

Quote:

TiVo Premiere owners will also be very happy with their version of the update since it adds the aforementioned new features but doesn't stop there

It was a bit of humour , some posters seem to think these kind of things are copying and lack innovation which in itself is hilarious I'm sure they'll crop up again soon in the Sky section give it a few months ;) , its good to see all platforms moving forward especially when there useful features.

Quick media rumour for those who've not seen it.

Rupert Murdoch and family, who are currently at the annual summer camp for billionaires in the States, is reported to be looking at making a bid for Time Warner.

Whoever said you slow up in old age obviously never told Murdoch this.....

If true:

Fox Kids may relaunch in UK and Ireland (with Cartoon Network name being axe).

But will not happen as RM will own (If takeover happen) CNN and Fox News in the US.

I should add that the other main media players like Comcast are also looking at buying Time Warner, even Google are considering a bid.

John Malone is at the summer camp too...

The Time Warner Cable/Comcast deal has yet to be approved, so not a dead cert yet. But it seems the Americans are back in mega merger mode. You have cable tv companies, satellite tv companies (Dish & Direct tv), telephone & mobile companies (AT&T, Verizon etc ) and the big five media giants (Disney, Viacom/CBS, News Corp, Comcast, Time Warner) all looking at further "consolidation".

What implications could this have for VM customers if it goes ahead?
