New superhub 2 and no wifi
Just had the new Superhub 2 installed by the VM the technician when I was at work
I got home to be told by the mrs that he could not get the laptop to communicate by wifi but I got my iphone to connect in a few seconds with no fuss I am now logged into the new superhub as I am writing this and have checked the required settings and password etc which all match but no wifi on my laptop for some reason. When the superhub 1 was connected I had no issues at all Anyone any ideas what could be wrong. The technician even gave up after several attempts and assumed it was something on my laptop and not a setting on the superhub 2 BTW I am running Windows 8.1 on the laptop |

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
what is happened? Is the network not being detected at all or is it coming up in the scan but it isn't letting you connect to it?
Edit: I have just re-read your post. When you say there is no wi-fi on your laptop do you mean no wireless at all? Is there is a wi-fi led on the laptop telling you where the hardware is actually enabled on the laptop? It might be that somebody has disabled it by accident and you need to enable it by pressing the function key plus an F key, e.g. Fn+F4. The logo will be on one of the F keys. |
Ok let me be a bit clearer. The wifi on my laptop is working and the super hub is showing it as a connected device. I can see the yellow exclemation sign in the wifi signal strength indicator and have limited connectivity as a result
|
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
it has got to be a firewall or some sort of access restriction policy in windows 8. As it has connected to a new network the default settings would have changed and it is highly probably your wife may have selected the wrong zone settings. If you right click on the network icon on your taskbar and open the network and sharing center it will open a window displaying your current connections. Next to each connection it will tell you the profile which has been associated with that connection such as home network, public network etc. If yours isn't set to home network you should be able to click on it and change it.
Have you tried doing on ipconfig to see whether the shub has given you an ip address and it is set as your default gateway? |

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
find out which wifi card you have then search for the drivers on the manufacturers website and install it even if you already have the latest drivers installed.

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
how interesting, that means it is something in the shub's config which is doing it. I have never had a look at the shub's wireless settings but it isn't set to something like "g only" and the laptop is trying to use n? You also never said whether the NIC is working on the laptop but cant find the network or whether the network is displayed and you just cant connect to it (i.e. an authentication issue)
|
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
Norton has a habit of doing exactly this, in fact it's often the worse culprit. Normally it needs a specialised cleanup tool to fix, "turning it off" or even uninstall won't fix it (if it is indeed the problem).
However the easiest and most reliable way of finding out if the problem is any software whatsoever on the laptop or not, is to boot up a live CD and see if you can connect there (Ubuntu is among the easiest to use). If that works - the problem is Windows, or something in Windows. If it doesn't work then there's no point faffing around with the software or settings as the problem is nothing to do with it. |
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
The "Limited connectivity" yellow exclamation mark usually means you are connected to the network, but you aren't getting an IP address or aren't getting external connectivity.
Usual culprit (outside of the CM side of the connection being dead) is that DHCP is not giving you an address. Quite likely the computer is set to use a static address outside the range the superhub will want to deliver, or that is currently in use by another device. Setting windows to get an address automatically and making sure the superhub has DHCP enabled would fix that. |
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
Yeah that'd be a reasonable guess. However he did already say his IT-infused nephew has already guided him through checking IP settings and "created a new IPV4 address" for him...

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
I wonder if static IP settings were left over during the nephew's diagnostics? Doesn't windows use different IP settings for each different wireless network (or did I just make that up?)?
|
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
No, you're are making it up. Windows just has one set of IP protocol settings for all wireless WLAN networks.
Mobile phones such as those running iOS operating system or Android do have different settings per network but Windows (at least up to and including Windows 7) does not. Actually I'm not sure what Microsoft MS Windows 8 does, when I last tested the developer preview it behaved the same as 7 but I suspect it's has changed since then. |
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
Yup, you're right on that one. Not sure where I got that from. I don't think 8 has changed much though, but like yourself I don't really go near it if I don't have to.
Still, it's possible there are static settings left over that just happen to work on the Belkin (different subnet, perhaps). Just a guess though. My money is on Norton ruining it for everyone, as always. |
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
it doesnt create different ip profiles, it only uses different network profiles as far as firewall configuration goes and what ports are opene and what progs/features and processes are allowed through the firewall depending on the network location you specify. The only way you can configure another ip address, dns etc is through the alternate configuration tab which has been around for donkeys.
|
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
Yuck. Who'd have thought Windows would still be so backwards now virtually all other operating systems have per-network IP settings for wireless networks.

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
Phil, have you checked the security settings on the SH2 wireless? Log into the SH2, select 'Advanced Settings' then under 'Wireless' check the 2.4 & 5 GHz Primary. By default it should be set to WPA Auto but if not and it's on one of the newer and stronger encryption settings such as WPA2-PSK this sometimes doesn't allow older wireless cards to connect due to the advanced encryption.
I only found this out when my friend visited with his older laptop and for some reason I couldn't get it to connect when everything else would. Found this solution which worked for us so thought I'd let you know in case this may solve your issue. Failing that, you don't mention whether you've tried a good old reboot? Turn the SH2 off for 30 seconds and let it reboot and see what happens. Hope you get it sorted mate. |

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
Have you tried to turn off the encryption on the hub to rule out your adaptor drivers 100%? If so then norton is the next logical step
|
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
You've not given enough information for us to convince you beyond all doubt but put simply, since you've supposedly ruled out every more likely option, what else is there?
You've not had any problems? Good for you. Absence of something isn't much proof though. Those of us who've been fixing problems caused by Norton for over a decade will have a rather more varied view. |

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
A family member had been using Windows 8.1 + Norton + Superhub 2 succesfully for 3-4 months. Then suddenly Wifi stopped working. The wifi signal indicator on the laptop showed a good-quality wifi signal but the laptop did not connect to internet.
It turned out the cause was the Norton firewall blocking 192.168.0.1. Family member has no knowledge about firewalls so Norton itself must have been the culprit. Uninstalled the the whole or Norton from the control panel of W8 and after this wifi was back to normal. I then put Kaspersky Internet Securiity demo version onto laptop. If this had not worked I would run the Ubuntu (at least version 12.04 or newer) LiveCd in demo mode. |

OK I removed Norton using the Norton Uninstall tool then restarted the Laptop and still no connection to the internet. It seems strange that the Laptop is communicating with the SH2 but has no internet access.

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
What happens when you ping 8.8.8.8 now ?
In fact, ping the following (in this order): 192.168.100.1 8.8.8.8 www.google.com What's the result for each? (And if you get an error, what's the exact error). |

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
*** RESOLVED ***
I had another go at finding the issue and it now works. In the SH2 settings I changed it to WPA Auto and it connected. However this is very strange as I thought this was tried when I spoke to my nephew the other day but perhaps in all the confusion it was overlooked. |
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
Wow, so we were all wrong except jb66, and it turns out he had the wrong wireless settings on his laptop all along?
Yikes! |
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
I have spoken too soon. I turned on the laptop this evening when I got home from work and guess what, no connection again.
I have made sure the SH settings have not changed and all setting on the laptop and SH2 are the same as last night when I had a working connection. |
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
I'm just wondering if the sh2 is faulty maybe?
Or maybe a pin hole reset might help? |
Wifi problem with Superhub 2
I've just received a new Superhub 2 after changing to the Big Kahuna and going from Superhub 1 30Mb to Superhub 2 152Mb.
The initial connection and registration worked just fine, but over the three days since I got it, it seems difficult to keep a wifi connection. My PC on wired connection is fine. My Nexus 7 tablet shows the network as "saved, secured with WPA/WPA2" when the connection has been lost, and trying to "forget" and then re-enter the passphrase doesn't work. Similarly with my Galaxy S4 mini phone, and my wife's Kindle Fire HDX. Switching it off and then on after 30 seconds works, but I have had to do this 4 times in 24 hours. I rarely had to reboot my Superhub 1. Any suggestions welcome. |
Re: Wifi problem with Superhub 2
you could try moving your SH away from other electrical items but if that's not possible stick it in modem mode and use your own router.
|
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
I spent 1 hour on the phone to VM customer services last night and the person dealing with the issue almost ran out of options until he rebooted the Superhub about 4 times then I had a working connection which lasted all of a couple of hours.
I give up. |

1) Why did you replace your Superhub 1 if you didn't have any problems with it
2) Have you tried resetting the Superhub 2? If so and it is still having these problems, it's probably faulty and needs replaced. |

The reason it was replaced is that we had a change in services so they did the speed upgrade to 150mb and installed the new Superhub at the same time. In another thread on this forum I was not bothered about the new model as my old one worked perfectly. I might ask VM to come back and reinstall the old model if they can do that ---------- Post added at 10:01 ---------- Previous post was at 09:58 ---------- Quote:

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
OK, some more info, if it affects anyone's view on my situation. I keep having to switch off and on my SH2, as the wifi is not working, sometimes after only an hour from the previous time. The 2.4GHz light is extinguished when I go to try to fix it, and although the 5GHZ light is still on, neither channel is working. Additionally, although the internet connection through ethernet on my PC still works, the GUI web page to the SH2 is not accessible. I tried a pin reset, too, but no apparent change in behaviour. I'm thinking I will phone Virgin and ask for a replacement, but happy to hear any other suggestions.
|
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
Got to say that I have been experiencing this as well, but it has not been that bad yet.
I have my SH2 for 2 weeks after replacing my SH1 and about 3 times during this time I had to cycle my router. On r29... I give it a few days, if it gets worse I think I need a replacement... |
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
hard reset it. theres a pinhole reset button on the back of the SH2, hold it down for 30 odd seconds.
|
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
I hate to say it but the hard reset has been done countless times.

Phil what is the make and model of your wifi card inside the laptop? |
Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
I had something similar. In the WiFi settings on your router, make sure you have a clear channel selected (2.4) or set to auto compatibility (5). Then make sure that greenfield mode is not selected for either 2.4 or 5. This may not be your issue, but I mention because it can cause this intermittent problem and might help. Gotta be worth a go?

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi
it is working at last. I got the laptop working again due to a faulty memory module and it still had the same problem.
I completely uninstalled the drivers for the wifi card and installed from fresh and that did the trick as before I just updated it over the existing installation. The only difference I have noticed within the device manager is the it shows a 'virtual' wireless adapter as well as the original it has always showed. Been running this a few days now with no issues at all so I hope this is the end of all my problems. I still can't figure out why this happened when using the SH2 |
