Superhub 2 problems

Hello everyone, I signed up today looking for help with this problem, I am with VM on a 60mb deal I had the old superhub but the wifi range didn't cover my house so I rang VM and paid £20 for a superhub2 which came last Thursday. The wifi range on the new hub covers the whole house but the speed is almost unusable, some times I get 60mbps but most of the times I get less than mbps! It's so bad my wife uses 3g on her phone rather than wifi. I should add it seems to be the worst when I am downloading, is this a problem with the superhub2 or are VM slowing me down?

Any help would be very appreciated.

If you have to shell out hard earned then the best bang for the buck is always obtained by buying a proper router (top of the line asus or linksys don't disappoint) and connecting with the superhub switched to modem mode.

Re: Superhub 2 problems

Thanks for the reply, I would prefer not to spend more money and was hoping there was something I could do in the superhubs settings to speed things up? I have read about changing the settings for the firewall, IP flood detection & port forwarding and was hoping someone here might have any tips on this? Surely not everyone with a superhub2 is using it in modem mode? Maybe I should ring VM and see if they'll reactivate my old superhub as the only problem I had with it was wifi range which I can live with / buy a booster.

Have you enable both 2.4 and 5 Ghz at the same time? Maybe try experimenting with that.

Re: Superhub 2 problems

if the wi-fi speed sucks when you are downloading is it possible you are saturating you have already saturated your connection which is why other devices can't access anything? Mick is right though, if you are going to pay for a router you can do a lot better than the shubs. Ad you have already coughed up the dosh the best thing you can try atm is to use the two shubs in tandem. I would leave shub2 where it is currently located and put shub1 at the opposite end of the house and set it up as a wap on 2.ghz. If that doesn't work out and if you are still having problems I would put shub2 in modem mode (and yes there is a reason why modem mode exists and had to be created) and get a proper router like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LINKSYS-CI...item1e7e9893ff which you wont have any problems with at all

^^ What he said.

Some houses are simply too big for one wireless access point to cover, regardless of how good it is.

In those situations two cheap ones will always outperform one expensive one.

Re: Superhub 2 problems

I just got my Superhub 2 today, it seems to be alot more reliable then the first one and I now have full coverage over all 4 floors of the house without any black spots whereas with the first one I only had to go outside the room in which the router was placed and the connection would drop...

I might see if VM will activate my superhub 1 again my pc is hard wired so I don't see any reason my speedtests are coming back at 1mbps when downloading I never had these problems with the superhub 1

if they do do that ask them to take the SH2 back and give you you're money back. they charged you £20 for a self install of a router which does not work. They will just steal it otherwise they have stolen money from people who have had totally failed installs.. I know of 2 people robbed out of £30 each

Re: Superhub 2 problems

The speed suffers even on my pc which is hard wired I wonder if there is something in the settings of the hub that can fix this other than modem mode. The SH1 was perfect bar the wifi wouldn't detect in 1 or 2 rooms.

Have you checked the power levels on your new SH2? Check these to see if they are within the acceptable range and if you are not sure, paste them into a post on here and a I'm sure a friendly CF member will be along to help shortly :-)

No I haven't, how do I do this?

Thanks

In a browser http:\\192.168.0.1

You'll get a password screen. Ignore that. In top right hand corner is a link "Router Status".

Copy & paste the Downstream, upstream and Network Log pages.

Cheers

Re: Superhub 2 problems

bp2411, if you have a look at this sticky (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...al-levels.html) it tells you the optimum power levels.

I would say that looking at your power levels they are right on the edge of the optimum levels but coupled with the T3 time-outs your router is having difficulty holding it's connection. Therefore I would recommend you call VM (151 if you have a VM phone) and report it as a fault so they can send a tech out and adjust your signal levels.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I had a similar problem quite a while back with my 100Mb - bear in mind that it has never really given me too much trouble, even through peak times I tend to hit full speed:

http://imageshack.com/a/img837/5650/4pbh.png

When the initial problems did occur, I called Virgin Media and an engineer was sent out. Upon 45 minutes of going back and forth between the green cabinet and my house, he concluded that the power levels were fluctuating badly so he attached this to the modem:

Re: Superhub 2 problems

My router has one of them boxes on, it was on my old SH so I assumed it needed to go on my new one, I might take it off and see if that makes a difference.

It says on it

Forward Path Attenuator
6dB

Sephiroth 07-02-2014 15:45

Re: Superhub 2 problems

As your power level shows 6 dBmv now, if you take it off, then your power level will jump to 12 dBmv. Your SH2 may be OK with that, but it's above the threshold that VM would like to see (10 dBmv).

So I advise you leave the FPA on.

It's a FPE so only if they have the wrong slope/tilt on their signal. It's not the same as a FPA!

Your levels are outside the considered norm (Too high). Though things may well run OK don't be surprised if there's trouble on the horizon.

From your previous levels and the presence of the FPE I think a tech needs to to look at the whole setup.

As per my earlier post and others, you really need a tech visit to check your power levels. They'll probably just need to replace your 6dB FPA with a 10dB FPA to lower your levels and hopefully you'll be ok. A new SH2 won't help you until you get your power levels sorted.
