Super Hub 1 no longer being distributed by Virgin Media?

Not sure how long this has been the case but from browsing the Virgin Media website it looks like they are only now giving out the New Super Hub (Super Hub 2) for all tiers - including 30Mb (which used to get Super Hub 1).

Does anybody know how long this has been the case?

What about swap outs - are they also only replacing old modems with the Super Hub 2 now?

Thanks for any replies.

Note: this was originally posted on DS, by a different user, which caught my attention, but it has of yet not received any replies.

Installers only carry superhub 2s. If you get an install or move house you get a superhub 2.

Service technicians swap superhub 1s with a refurbished superhub 1s. Folk on legacy equipment also get a superhub 1 as a replacement.

Not always on a house move, only if the account has been upgraded to the shub2, otherwise it gives a provisioning error on the pda and the job cannot be closed

Every house move should have the sh2 code added

That's strange as my account didn't get a SH2 code on it and they have swapped me to a SH2 with now issues.

VM don't offer the SH1 to any new customer existing customer can sometimes be given a SH1 replacement but most engineers will swap the modem to a SH2.

Wrong, most TECHNICANS would get an ass kicking for handing out sh2s. Only house moves or new installs get a SH2. Faults will always give a SH1 untill there are none left to hand out

I beg to differ, I spoken to ALOT of engineers and they all agree they can swap if they want to, hence why mine was swapped WITHOUT the SH2 code on my account.

My modem was replaced recently with a Superhub. Is there any easy way of telling if it's a 1 or a 2?

Also now that everyone knows the SHUB 2 is better then yeah there would be, although they installed a SHUB 1 with my brothers install when he was promised a SHUB 2 but hey they sent another tech to install it the other day no charge so all well that ends well

I don't think there is a SH2 code for sales / customer services anymore, because it's standard kit across all installs.

Keep the old established customers on the old kit.

Actually most 'old established customers' will get new kit as part of the upgrades this year, as anyone going to M/L 50Mbit from M/L 20Mbit will need it.

Most customers on SH1 are either fairly recent customers or have had a fairly recent upgrade that required the SH1. There is no reason to swap the SH1 out when it is technically capable of delivering up to 152Mb.

If the wifi keeps dropping and it spontaneously reboots itself all the time it's an SH1 if it works reasonably as expected it's an SH2 :D

I dunno why I'm extracting the urine because, if I'm honest, the SH2 wipes the floor with Sky's dismal offering.

Does anyone know if the SH2 hardware is being used for business installs with a version of the business firmware?

I'm currently on the 60Mb service with Superhub1 in South Manchester.I'm due to be upgraded to the 100Mb service between March & May this year. Will I be given a Superhub2 please?

Perhaps existing users can tell me if the new Superhub is any good please.TIA.

My SHUB 1 gives me a full 60/3mb through my own router whether wired or wireless so not really bothered.

no you won't be given a shub2. Shub1 is more than capable of supporting speeds of 200mbits+ and you won't notice any difference at all between using shub1 or shub2 for it. Shub1 has many flaws which shub2 makes up for me (wireless being one of them) but the answer to upgrading shub1 is to put it in modem mode and buy yourself a proper 3rd party router. Failing that, you will automatically up graded to 100mbits this year and you will not notice anything different operationally with the exception of a fast connection.

Re: Super Hub 1 no longer being distributed by Virgin Media?

they certainly do not appear to want my SH1 back as its been sat in a box for months waiting for them to get in touch. How long is fair time to assume it is abandoned and no longer at risk of being charged for if I dump it?

Thanks for that, General Maximus. Already have the Superhub in modem mode and am using it with an Airport Extreme router.

As you say, the only difference will be the increased speed.

I think it's absolute nonsense that long term existing customers are being fobbed off with inferior kit! I'm due the upgrade from 100Mb to 150Mb between June and August this year, and if they think i'll be taking the SHUB 1 they can think again!

If you're a truly long-term customer, you should be out of contract. Threaten to leave and they'll be happy to upgrade you.

Personally I don't think the sh1 is fit for purpose. I get 120 meg wireless on my sh2 but only got 40 on my super hub 1s

Thank you guys

We were always on the XL size broadband until May last year when went upto XXL braodband, i mentioned at the time i was only getting the same as XL thru wireless, told it was my equipment (pc etc) as i was getting full 120mb when connected thru wired connection but even now on are brand new Sony Vaio Ultrabook , that only still gives about 56mb, i complained again today and technical suppport said they had changed the frequency and it should get faster, they still tried it on about "you dont get your full download speed thru wireless", yes but you should not loose half surely!!! anyway its still crap.

think i will ring retention and tell them i have had enough , whats the point of upgrading us to 150mb and still only getting 56mb.

You need to have the correct equipment. A superhub 2 on 5ghz with a 3 antenna wifi card can get over 100 easily.

Re: Super Hub 1 no longer being distributed by Virgin Media?

yeah, unfortunately VM are providing you with 152mbits and you can also receive/achieve that speed. The fact that you are chosing to use equipment and transfer methods which prevent you from achieving a high speed isn't VM's problem. It is like buying an Audi R8 and moaning that you can drive 150mph round your housing estate.

I stiill have the old Ambit black modem and am buying a new laptop to use wirelessly. With the new BB speed increase, I don't think the modem will be powerful enough. Will VM supply mw with a new Superhub if I ask?

eh i dont understand i am using the euipment VM supply Superhub 1, i am saying this is not up to the job, and it is a VM problem, people on here have confirmed that with SH 1 they could not get there full speeds then when upgraded to SH2 they got full speed. thru wireless.

I just rang two different people re the hub, and I was told that the speed had already increased in my area but I would need a superhub. the first person quoted me £20 and the second person quoted £5.99 for self installation. Confused, you bet I am. I didn't even know my speed had been increased:shocked:

You could always unplug your modem, ring up faults and claim it has died and won't power on. They can do nothing except send you out a new modem and I very much doubt Virgin will send anything other than a superhub.

It's about as naughty as charging a customer £5.99 for up to date equipment.

Replacements for faulty modems are a SuperHub 1

If you need a new SuperHub as part of the speed upgrade programme, it's a SuperHub 2

Fair enough. A SHUB 1 should still get the higher speeds though, at least when they push the config file down.

And presumably the tech will replace the out of date equipment with a superhub, right? Aren't they supposed to replace equipment that's more than 3 years old even if there's no fault? Or has that been changed?

Nope, we only swap modems that can't handle 20/1. We have no method of checking how old the modem is so I don't think thats ever been policy.
