Upgrade . . nah, forget it

The old faithful (ha) TV box smt-2100c died a few days ago so I rang and was told an engineer would call tomorrow - nice :)

Then me and the missus got to thinking we may as well upgrade to the basic package thing (essential ? ) which would give us faster BB and a tivo box, so I rang back to do the deal

Sorted nicely until I asked the nice lady on the phone when an engineer would be coming to do the installation stuff - and she said it won't need an engineer, the tivo will be sent by post at a cost to us of £20 and we simply plug it in and away we go.

erm, let's have a think here, I'm upgrading (bigger monthly payment to VM) on a new 12 month contract, and you're going to charge me £20 to send the tivo out by post.

. . . . no thanks, so the engineer is now calling tomorrow to 'fix' the old box instead, my payments will remain the same, and I'm not on a new contract.

well done :D

The logic of virgin media is ridiculous at times. retentions are pretty rubbish these days too.

I thought that the Tivo boxes need a manned install as they have to check all the signal levels?

Can't the engineer who comes out do upgrades? I am sure I read a post somewhere saying that they could. Maybe a passing VM staffie member can say whether it is possible, I would certainly ask the guy who is due to come to you tomorrow.

As far as I know fault engineers can do upgrades if they have spare kit on the van to do it. However they can't booked to do upgrades

Also, TiVo is engineer install at the moment still as far as I'm aware. It's only the V HD boxes that are delivered, so for Carth, it should be £49.95 to get TiVo installed.

Thanks Ben. I knew I had seen something about upgrades. :)

That seems a shame, but I can't blame you for not doing it when there is no incentive. Being paid by the job doesn't allow time for doing anything other than what you have been sent to do.

crikey, I didn't even want a HD box :erm:

and I don't blame engineers for not being keen to do anything they won't get paid for ;)

I really cannot now see the point of VM replacing a faulty SD box with a new SD anymore, you are just prolonging the use of old tech!

We carry 2 samsung 2110s, customers go on about how old their box is then I unwrap the same model...

See the OPs posts. Like many people, they don't want HD and don't want to pay for something they won't use.

Surely that's a good thing? No point in scrapping perfectly good hardware.

Sorry it's just my personal view just cannot see the sense, VM will not give a new customer a V+, SD STB anymore! By the way I have no problem people only wanting to watch SD like I would want programmes on VM network to be broadcast in mp4 so I can record many more HD programmes on my TIVO HDD!

What model of box did you get?

Re: Upgrade . . nah, forget it

It's the SMT 21 10C

not state of the art world beating by any standard, but it allows me to game in peace while they watch the soaps :D

very rare I watch TV, nothing that really interests me

 however that could change when the mighty Luton regain league status ;)

Lot's of Sky customers seem to get offered V+HD boxes in their second rooms as an incentive to swap.
