Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Taken from Formula1.com
The 2014 season brings with it some of the biggest changes to Formula One racing’s regulations for quite some time… Power - it’s out with 2.4-litre normally-aspirated V8 engines and in with 1.6-litre V6 turbo engines, revving to a maximum of 15,000rpm. While the old V8s produced more than 750bhp, the 2014 units put out around 600bhp with additional power coming from Energy Recovery Systems (see below). Gearbox - gearboxes have eight forward ratios - rather than the previous seven - which each team must nominate ahead of the season. Energy Recovery Systems (ERS) - from 2014, a larger proportion of each car’s power comes from ERS which, together with the engine, makes up the powertrain or power unit. As well as generating energy under braking, ERS units also generate power using waste heat from the engine’s turbocharger. Unlike the previous KERS - which gave drivers an extra 80bhp for just over six seconds per lap - the 2014 ERS gives drivers around 160bhp for approximately 33 seconds per lap. To compensate for the extra power being generated under braking by ERS, teams are allowed to use an electronic rear brake control system. Fuel - to promote fuel efficiency, from 2014 fuel is limited to 100kg per race. Previously fuel was unlimited, but teams typically used around 160kg per race. Minimum weight - to compensate for the increased weight of the 2014 powertrain, minimum weight has been increased from the current 642kg to 690kg. Exhaust - unlike previously where two exhaust tailpipes were used, the 2014 regulations mandate the use of a single tailpipe which must be angled upwards to prevent the exhaust flow being used for aerodynamic effect. Additionally, bodywork is not allowed to be placed behind the tailpipe. Nose height - for safety reasons the height of noses has been reduced for 2014. The maximum height is 185mm (previously it was 550mm). Front wing - front wings will be a little narrower from 2014 with the width reduced from 1800mm to 1650mm. Rear wing - the rear wing also looks a little different for 2014. The previously-legal lower beam wing has been outlawed and the main flap has become slightly shallower in profile. Testing - in-season testing returns for 2014, albeit in a restricted format with the regulations allowing four tests of no more than two consecutive days at circuits where an event has taken place. There are also increased restrictions on windtunnel testing and CFD simulations. Points - double drivers’ and constructors’ points will be awarded at the final race of the Formula One season - Abu Dhabi for 2014 - in order to maximise focus on the championship until the end of the campaign. Driver numbers - drivers will be asked to choose their race number, between 2 and 99, for the duration of their career in the FIA Formula One World Championship. Number 1 will be reserved for the current world champion, should he choose to use it. If more than one driver chooses the same number, priority will be given to the driver who finished highest in the previous year’s championship. The driver number must be clearly visible on the front of the car and on the driver's crash helmet. Additional Friday practice drivers - we are used to seeing teams replace one of their race drivers with a test driver for opening practice on a Friday. However, from 2014 teams are able to run up to four drivers - though still only two cars - in either Friday session. New penalties - race stewards will have the option to hand out five-second penalties for minor infringements. Additionally, any driver who earns 12 penalty points on their superlicence during a 12-month period will be given a one-race ban. Pole position trophy - a new trophy will be awarded to the driver who scores the most pole positions during the season. In the event of a tie, the trophy will be awarded to the driver who holds the greatest number of second places. If there is still a tie, the greatest number of third places will be taken into account and so on until a winner emerges. |
Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
I remember back in the 80s the Honda Williams (Turbo) was the most powerful F1 car ever, in the right conditions it could wheel-spin in all 6 gears, according to Mansell.
With turbos there might be a few failures and loads of white smoke, and one dean car :D |

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Should make for an interesting season. Although some of those rules are going to make the cars looks silly with aesthetics taking a back seat to performance with that nose height rule, we already saw that with the stepped fronts the vast majority of the teams opted for.
I hope we don't end up with all the cars looking like this. https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2013/12/6.jpg Here is a video showing what is supposedly Ferraris new 2014 f1 engine. Sure sounds a lot better than what all the doomsdays have been saying with the switch to turbos ruining the sound. |

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Ah. Did wonder about that. Wonder what is so special about 44 that Hamilton chose it?
Caterham to reveal 2014 car on first day of first test in Jerez, Spain. Runs from January 28 to February 1. McLaren and Mercedes will also be at the first test with their 2014 cars. I would imagine as well that Caterham will be revealing their drivers at the test as well, as they will need drivers to actually test the cars. Lotus will be skipping the first test, instead they will take part in the second and third test both of which take place in Bahrain. Jerez - 28/01 - 01/02 Bahrain - 19/02 - 22/02 Bahrain - 27/02 - 02/03 |

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
All drivers have been confirmed now for the new season. Literally a week before first testing begins in Jerez, Caterham have announced the 2 drivers who will drive their car.
Japanese veteran driver Kamui Kobayashi will be joined by Swedish novice Marcus Ericsson. Kobayashi returns to the sport after taking a year out last season, in which he drove sports cars for Ferrari. He made his debut in 2009, driving for Toyota before moving to Sauber for 3 seasons. The last of which, 2012, saw his first and only podium finish in F1 at the Japanese GP. He has a career points total of 125. Ericsson, who is 23, makes the step up from GP2, after spending 4 seaons in the junior category. He has driven a F1 car before, in 2009 when he tested for Brawn GP, after he won the Japanese F3 crown. He becomes the first Swede since Stefan Johansson in 1991 to race in F1. In other news, Valtteri Bottas announced on Twitter that for the first 2 days of the test in Jerez, he will be testing the new car before handing over the car to new team mate Felipe Massa. Williams also revealed that they will be running a heritage blue livery at Jerez. |

Hi all,
How about taking a punt now. Who will retire first in the season opener and who will win...... Lotus to be out first, they wont have enough cash to go testing so will have all the reliability gremlins. Massa to win. Merc engine seems bullet proof so far and the Williams looks a half decent car....(if you saw this before the edit... D'OH) There ya go. Discuss :D |

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
I'm really looking forward to the new season. I think there may be some surprises from the likes of Williams.. however, I do believe from what i've read and see it *could* be Hamiltons year. I hope so. i'd like to see him back up there, as for Vettel, every good thing has an end and i'm glad they aren't doing so well. Its boring, he gets to the first corner off her goes and Vettel wins.. boring.

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
I watched the qualy this morning, I do believe, although it is too early to tell yet, this could be Hamiltons year. I'm also, curious over Vettel, I don't think he is as the same calibre as drivers that have gone through rough times, I personally dont think it will make him. I believe he will throw his dummy out the pram so to speak. As for the new cars, I hated the noise at first, however, i've listened properly now and I love the "turbo whizz" they make. I also like the grainy noise they make.
All said, I think theres but too much negative points but I am enjoying having it back and especially now, I have SKY Sports F1. |
Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
The rule changes have done it.. look at the state of these cars. RBR were never there. Marussia couldn't even do a parade lap, Hamilton out, Vettel out.
We wanted excitement and we got it. But I was certain we wanted racing and not a game of who can make their car work because that's what is going to decide these races. Massa, Kobayashi out. Bets on how many are actually going to see the flag? Vettel shouted down the radio, as much as I dislike the guy he has a fair point, this is ridiculous. Bianchi, Ericsson, Maldonado out. Fuel saving in racing. :/ |

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Gets better and better today. Vettel and Hamilton both retiring, and now Red Bull have Ricciardo DQ'd for breaching fuel consumption rules. Red Bull say they will appeal and probably will win.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/26601418 ---------- Post added at 14:41 ---------- Previous post was at 14:36 ---------- Red Bull say the sensors have been faulty ever since they were introduced. If that is the case, how comes other teams haven't been DQ'd or complained about it Christian Horner? Muppet. Just because RB aren't going to be able to cheat their way to a title this year they will moan about others cheating. |

Looks as though Red Bull took no notice of the instructions they were given by the technical director prior to the actual race. |
Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Hooray for an F1 era where results are decided based on fuel conservation, cars actually making the race and who isn't DQed at the end.. So much better
I thought this was racing? The actual race appears to take part in Qualifying. |
Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Think im going to give up on F1, all the best parts have gone, might keep an eye on paul di resta. Found myself skipping past the highlights to the end.

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Is Ecclestone stupid or just plain losing his mind? Apparently he is talking of taking legal action over the quieter engines.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/for...r-engines.html I cannot believe this. He was in agreement (or surely must have had some agreement over these new engines) so what has changed? |

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
All well and good, but who would replace him? The stupid old git is backing the appeal of Red Bull. If the fuel sensor was faulty, why did no other driver get DQ'd? Why can't Red Bull just admit that for once they don't have an edge over the other cars. Frankly, it's damn nice to see a team other than Red Bull winning the race. Even if I dislike Mercedes and their drivers. Hopefully Button will manage to get the car going and give McLaren a win.

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Talk about throwing your toys out the pram. Red Bull owner says he will quit the sport if the FIA uphold the DQ of Ricciardo. Good, get lost. About time someone challenged Red Bull, and now they are RB can't handle the fact that they haven't got a decent car.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/for...ification.html Although the article says he made the threat because the accusation of cheating could harm his drinks empire. I'll say it again: if the sensor is/was faulty, why did no other driver get punished? If the sensor is at fault, then every driver would have exceeded the fuel flow rate. |

Lewis Hamilton takes pole in wet Malaysian GP with Vettel second.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/26799194 Lets hope for better luck this weekend. |
Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Nein. Not amused with Mercedes being pole. And I wondered how long it would be before Red Bull managed to make miraculous recovery from Australia.
|
Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Glad Lewis is on pole.

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
This is not going the way I want it to. Not impressed with Mercedes winning, and I love how Red Bull have suddenly managed to make their car work. How did they manage to do that, the bunch of whinging... and I'll stop there before I earn infraction points.

Re: Formula 1 2014 Season
Yes. Unless they manage to bin both cars in a race then there's no one is catching them. Era of Mercedes dominance is here. Rule changes will wipe that out the same way it did to RBR.
