what would you do?

We ordered an item online on Friday and it was delivered to my place of work yesterday.
Today I received the same item again.
Should I return the second item or keep hold of it for month or so and then sell it on.
Value of said item is £230.
We can't make use of second item as it's only possible to use one (we only have room for one)
Just for fun, can anyone guess what it is that I ordered.

Possibly a kitchen appliance like a dishwasher or microwave? Maybe a shower?

Give us a clue.

Is English their first language?

My guess is a TV, i hope this happens with my Xbox One and i get to keep another.

Hold onto it boxed up for a month or 2 checking to make sure you're not charged for it and if you hear nothing maybe keep it.

Look at it this way: could someone lose their job over this if the erroneous item fails to turn up? Especially 6 weeks before Christmas, perhaps someone with a young family?

Your call of course...

But if he keeps it, the person may keep his job and he gets one for free.
where if he sent it back, the person may lose his job anyway, and he loses out on having a free one.

I think before we make any rash decisions. we need to know who it was ordered from. and possibly what the item is worth on ebay.

v0id 19-11-2013 19:27

Re: what would you do?

Serously though, you should contact them and ask what you should do.
Big companies like Amazon will usually tell you to keep it as it's too much hassle to have it returned.
They have to pay for the return, and arrange a time to collect that's suitable for you

..that, and it's good PR

Companies rarely work that way and for goods to the value of that amount (or more) someone is more than likely going to miss it showing up on an inventory and someone will have to carry the can for it.

If he sends it back it may bring to light the mistake and the person loses his job anyway if he stays quiet no one might ever know of the error

keep it and sell it

if it's a washing machine PM me

as cash is waiting

Re: what would you do?

If it was a low value item it's more likely to be written off or even not noticed.

£230? Highly doubtful it's going to be overlooked. If people can switch off their conscience and have the attitude of 'finders keepers' then that's on them.

Osem 19-11-2013 19:54

Re: what would you do?

I would contact the company and advise them of the mistake.

Re: what would you do?

I've been in this situation.

Last year I received a second £70 radio receiver.

It was their mistake for sending it out.

Now being a good guy, I contacted them and said, I'm more than happy to send it back to them, drive to the post office and sent it off.

Now the least the shop could have done is say thankyou and give me a money off voucher or something. Nothing. Not even 5% off my next purchase.

You end up sorting out someone elses mess up and you get nothing in return.

Re: what would you do?

if you haven't signed for it everyone's a winner!

they get to write it off their profits - you get to keep it

and I get to buy it if only you'd tell me what it is

It's just a washing machine. I've give him £40 for it. collecting it Friday.

Re: what would you do?

First one was signed for by myself, the second by goods in.
Morally it should go back, or at least make it available for them to collect, I'll not be taking it to the post office that's for sure.

Could have been twins (sorry v0id ;))

Anyway, linky http://www.hypnia.com/mattresses/44-...-mattress.html

I once ordered a Microsoft Track Ball mouse on next day delivery, the next day it came as promised, the following day another Trackball mouse was delivered. I phoned them back and the company said, "we'll arrange to get it picked up with City Link". That was 2 years ago.

Ebay is your mate with click and collect or, if you want some scratchola for Christmas I'm not far away from you, I could do with a new Mattress. :D

Except the person who will get the blame for the missing item. This is still technically theft.

Under those circumstance you'd be absolutely right. You informed them, they said they'd make arrangements. You've made reasonable efforts to get make the item available to be collected but the company did not follow it up.

You could always return the one you signed for and get a full refund, that way you'll have a free mattress.

Money wins over conscience every time.

if someone was going to be murdered over it, then I'd think about it.

I think the items are a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes sent out individually due to their cost.

I'd only complain if I didn't get a left and a right. :dunce:

Only it's not free at all, someone has to pay for it.

you might get them the bullet if you point out the mistake made to them - so there's no need to get on your pious high-horse again

In business, losses need to be coveref and/or explsined. Having once worked for a company thst sold amongst other things mattresses I can assure you that stock worth £230 would be noticed. You don't simply "hope it'll go away"

It's not "pious", it's called not being so greedy when at this time of the year such actions can see someone lose their job.

As delivery was arranged there would be at least 2 records of it: the sale and also whoever dtopped both off. Delivrry isn't free and routes/journeys are recorded, not least for fuel/VAT purposes.

There is a very good chance of this getting picked up, as it's very likely records will back it up. If the item cannot then be recovered it's equally likely someone will be identified as the one at fault. True they may not lose their job about it but clearly some have no issues with putting that out of their mind especially at Christmas.

Re: what would you do?

I'd be checking my debit or credit card to make sure I'd not been charged X2.

Jimmy-J 20-11-2013 14:52

Re: what would you do?

What is the real possibility of a person losing their job because of this? If someone did get fired, then shame on that person doing the firing, especially at this time of year. ;)

Russ 20-11-2013 15:03

Re: what would you do?

All the shame in the world on the employer wouldn't get that person another job in time for Christmas.

But again, if you can live with that on your conscience then all well and good.

Jimmy-J 20-11-2013 15:10

Re: what would you do?
