Rumours of the 18th being said by some, I have heard before the end of this month.

Either way it's long overdue and look forward to having it here.

The iOS/Apple version doesn't allow 3G/4G streaming so may find the android is wifi only too.

I would hope this is something they will work on and bring out as more and more of the UK get 4G.

If it's the same as the ios app then the wifi is only needed for the device (mobile / tablet) to become a superior remote control of your TiVo box. In "away mode" (not connected to you home network) and over 3g / 4g the app will still be able stream live TV, delete, reprioritize, and set up recordings. you'll find that not all the channels are available to stream though.

paultrademark 14-11-2013 04:46

Re: TV Anywhere Android App

So it does stream over 3G when out the home then? I was under the impression it was wifi only.

dwarfofpoison 14-11-2013 05:18

Re: TV Anywhere Android App

I've only got ios devices and my ipad streams fine over 4g. You have to register your devices in My Virgin Media and currently only two devices allowed with only one able to stream.

Hmm not convinced but take your word for it. The VM site says

Live streaming and On Demand available in UK with broadband or WiFi internet access only

Maybe someone with an Iphone could switch to mobile data and stream something and post a screen grab, I'd do it but I have no data left.

Pretty sure if the Desire X is supported the older HTC One versions will be OK.

Well, they better be!!

I know it's off topic, but Andy_m, but have you received Android 4.3 or HTC Sense 5.5 upgrade for the HTC One? If so, what network you on? I have a HTC One too and I am on Orange and still not had it yet.:(

Back on topic -

I will be astonished if TV anywhere does not work on the HTC One, VM will receive a strongly worded e-mail if not. If the HTC One V can handle it, surely its far superior model would be able to?

Re: TV Anywhere Android App

Don't forget this document has been pulled, so it's possible it was not an up to date compatibility list. Does anyone know what the situation is with regards streaming Sky Sports? Obviously it is available by TV Anywhere but not the app? This would be the main use for me to be honest so very disappointing if it is not there. Surely the channels in the app should be the same as via the website?

trickytree 14-11-2013 14:13

Re: TV Anywhere Android App

Everything is moving to the mobile world... Sky know this and have not allowed Virgin (as yet) to allow their channels to be streamed on anything more than a PC/laptop.

A few weeks ago now I used TV Anywhere on a laptop for that very reason and when entering it asked if I wanted to be part of a survey.
Many questions involved things like would I use my app more on my iPad if you could use Movies & Sports on it. Worryingly another question was would I be willing to pay for that etc.

So seems it is something they may like to have a go at getting but if Sky are going to charge more to Virgin for letting them do that then they may have to pass that charge onto us the customer.

I use my in laws Sky Go due to them not having any tech or broadband. Unfortunately they have now got a tablet and will be getting a laptop as they now have broadband so looks like I will lose my Sky Go as they will want to use it.

I am very keen to see it available on tablets but not holding my breath

1st point, I have, yes. I'm with o2 now but the handset was supplied by a 3rd party and is unlocked.

2nd point I fully agree. Just strange that they would specify Google edition in the list.

TV companies need to work together to drop this arbitrary restriction on mobile devices. Now that full fat windows tablets are nearing the sub £400 mark why restrict a iPad from some channels when a windows tablet tablet can see the content via the webpage?

I can confirm that you CANNOT stream over 3G/4G on the iOS app, you have to be connected via Wifi

paultrademark 15-11-2013 01:44

Re: TV Anywhere Android App

Thought that was the case no idea why someone before said you can

geordiechris 15-11-2013 01:55

Re: TV Anywhere Android App

You can set up recordings, manage your list of shows that you've recorded and delete/amend them if necessary over 3G/4G.

Everything else - streaming available channels, using the app as your TiVo remote - require a wifi connection

That is not what I am able to do. My 4g iPhone is at this very moment the "Personal Hotspot" for my iPad and I am able to stream all the available channels on the Virgin TV Anywhere App.

I don't use my iPhone for streaming Virgin TV Anywhere because Virgin only allow you to make one device the primary device (able to stream) and only one change per month. So in order to demonstrate that you are totally incorrect I would have to change my primary device to my iPhone and that would mean no iPad streaming for me when I do the compulsory Christmas family traveling. So I'll also stop short of calling you a liar!

Please note that not all the Virgin TV Anywhere channels available on line are allowed to stream on phones or tablets, notably no Sky channels to date. The link below will dispel or confirm many other incorrect ideas.

And your iPad is receiving your personal hotspot signal as a wifi connection....correct??

May I also draw your attention to one of the points mentioned in the link you posted:

You can share, discover & manage over any network, mobile or abroad, but to watch you need to be on Wi-FI or BB in the UK

Well BlinkFeed is better, and you can turn it off, but I like it and think it works with the phone so I haven't. There is now a read later option, but I've gotten used to using Pocket for that anyway . I liked the gallery as it was so have left it like that, but there are some cool new editing options. Otherwise there are a few new bits on the drop down settings menu but nothing really too drastic.

Yeah, I am a fan of blink feed too. There are numerous stories I have read I would never of thought to look at if it were not for BlinkFeed. Have they put BBC content on yet?
The read later option sounds pretty good, I never thought to save stories previously.:dunce:

I could go on for a long time about this, but we will veer drastically off topic.:(

Thanks for the info though.:)

I think giving your log in details to friends and family is probably also a factor in this restriction.

I was only asked for mine last week as one of my mates wanted to watch the Liverpool derby on BT Sports, I politely refused of course ;)

Yes I think that's fair comment and there clearly does need to be some restriction. If they would do something like allowing four registered devices, with only two being able to simultaneously stream then it would be much better.

By 'superior' do you mean Sky Go Extra with its additional monthly charge?

Although to be fair you have to pay £5 a month or have multi room to get Sky Go Extra , Sky Go extra is far more flexible in my opinion it has an On Demand section and it allows you to download shows/movies to watch on the go for places you have no internet , it also allows you to watch Sky Sports and Sky Movies on tablet/smartphone.

Not familiar with the Sky one, but Netflix is essentially like that. Can't be difficult to implement

It's not about ease of implementation though - it's about how much to charge for allowing more devices to register and use the service.

That's the nature of the beast ! - Virgin themselves have not said today is the day, and ultimately it's them who hold the cards. The rest of us can only guess at the exact date

Content holders can also be a reason for what's available on what and how.

I have never seen such a drawn out affair like Tv Anywhere for Android, they tell us they want to make sure it is ready before releasing it all I can say after all this time it better be s--- hot.

Re: TV Anywhere Android App

Delayed again it would seem. VM were really taking the mic by saying it would be released SOMETIME this year. They most likely knew it would be released at the end of the year.

This whole shambles is probably my one big problem with Virgin, it's taken far too long. If it's not appreciably different from the US version, having been consistently told it's apparently not just a case of colouring it in red, I'll be quite irritated.
