Something to do with this?

A More energy efficient TiVo box

You can now save energy and money on your electricity bill by automatically setting your TiVo box to go into standby mode, this means you won’t have to switch off your box at the mains any more. Even when in standby mode your TiVo box won’t miss a show – it wakes itself up to make any recordings you’ve requested.

You can set to go into standby if you haven’t used your box for two or four hours. To change your default setting, go to Help & Settings > Settings > Devices > Power Saving Settings.

When your box is in standby mode, you’ll see a red light to the left on the front panel, but no picture or sound. Waking your box is easy, just press any of these buttons on your TiVo remote:

• Home
• TV
• Channel up/down
• Any number key
• Power

Sorry, but is that happening whilst your watching something?

In fact, is anybody able to give a better explanation of power saving mode? It surely can't just go in to stand by when you're using the box?

Go into Home > Settings > Devices > Power Saving Settings

There is a choice of 4 now

Off - never enters standby and suggestions will be recorded
Snooze (Suggestions on) - enters standby after 4 hours but suggestions are recorded.
Snooze (Suggestions off) - enters standby after 4 hours but suggestions are not recorded.
Sleep - enters standby after 2 hours but suggestions are not recorded.

Can you remember what it was set to? It's meant to default to Off for existing customers.

It saves about 8W.

It's not about money; it's about this:

That 8W = 31kg of CO2 a year. Multiply by n million TiVos and you've got a big saving.

The VHD box has always had a power saving option, at last TiVo begins to catch up.

Finally, the hard drive gets to spin down in standby! Although you can hear it spin back up with whatever background task it's decided to do now and again (when not recording)

My TIVO is so quiet, I don't notice these noises, but I expect it would be a different matter if I had the box in my bedroom.

I have one in the bedroom; no noise problem at all.

According to my energy reader, I'm saving around 1 kilowatt per day since the update. That's quite a saving over a year.

The National Grid should send VM a fruit basket. :)

Re: TiVo update - standby option

I have the update and generally like the new 'look and feel'. However, there is an issue for me with the 'standby' thing.

I have ALWAYS put my box into standby when not in use and have always left it plugged in. When going to bed at night I would make sure it was tuned to the news channel before putting in to standby, which meant that no matter what time I got up in the morning I was always able to power up and immediately rewind to the last 'top of the hour' to watch the news over breakfast.

I no longer get that option - TiVo starts 'capturing' the channel tuned to only from the moment it is powered up. I guess from reading what is on this thread it is because the hard drive now powers down as well - I wasn't aware that this wasn't happening previously - I can't hear mine, it is silent.

This was actually quite useful at other times as I often switch on the TV and see something that looks interesting on the channel that it started up on - I would frequently immediately rewind to watch it from the start.

I guess I have two options here 1- actually set up the box to record the news in the morning at the earliest hour that I am ever likely to get up (cumbersome) OR (in order to have the instant rewind available at any time) never put TiVo into standby though this rather defeats the object and breaks the habit of a lifetime for me! Am I missing another option here that allows TiVo to behave as it did before?

All 'standby' did on TiVo previously is turn off the video and audio output, and nothing else.

So technically it's no different than leaving TiVo on and turning your TV off

Thanks - pretty much what I thought then and my options are as stated.

That seems quite a good solution to me. You only need to do this once, and if you set 'keep at most' to 1 you won't need to worry about cleaning up. I think you'll even be able to do exactly as before and watch from the buffer instead of having to play the recording from My Shows.

raylove 09-11-2013 13:10

Re: TiVo update - standby option

Yes, you're right - if the box is recording it won't be in full standby so the buffer should work shouldn't it. I hadn't though about changing the series link option to keep just one - good tip!

if they had made the box more efficient then it would have saved even more ;)

If you have any suggestions how to make STBs more efficient without making them slower, less functional or more expensive, you could become very rich.

Better still, PM your suggestions to me... ;)
