Why pay them wages ?
http://news.sky.com/story/1163154/mp...r-energy-bills
This has to be an April fools joke. If MPs get this extra benefit, why pay them wages, we already hear that they claim for Newspapers, TV, flights etc. When is it going to end. They all get a good wage, and do other jobs so why can they get away with expenses for anything else. |
Re: Why pay them wages ?
what this country needs is a revolution lead by a ruthless dictator ,who will put the whole lot of em up against the wall
and then promptly resign and hand the country back to the democratic process minus the crooked spongers that call themselves mp's ;) |

Top Banana, Yes, but it still does not make sense.
If MPs can claim expenses for everything, then WHY pay them wages. Wasn't it last year that an MP claimed so much money on expenses to watch a porn channel. |
Re: Why pay them wages ?
it extracts the urine. There is an us and them society in this country the poor get poorer the rich get richer and those in the middle blame the poor weak and unemployed for the state of the society

Nearly all the politicians are living comfortably enough to not need to claim all these expenses at a cost to the tax payer. Greedy pigs. |

I wonder if MPs' salaries and perks should be Means Tested?

Re: Why pay them wages ?
I am not surprised by this. The fact is that most of them, given the chance to claim expenses for anything big or small, will do just that. I really think it will never change.

When l worked at The Commons as a sub contractor. I saw what type of grub and drink they have, and l can assure you its not something you would buy from Tesco's or Morrisons.
I worked for a top notch company and l always saw the stuff and it made me sick that they are allowed this stuff. Fortnum and Masons, Harrods, you name it thats where it came from. If MPs don't like it, it take thrown out out. If anyone drives round London, go down Pall Mall, and you will see all the toffs coming out of the private clubs boozed up to the eyeballs. They don't deserve wages, if everything is paid by us. |
Re: Why pay them wages ?
We could get rid of half of them. That would cut the trough bill in half for a start.

Re: Why pay them wages ?
The Welsh assembly (spit) is demanding a doubling of their numbers as they "work too hard". That will mean more seats on the gravy train.

Million Mask March is the thing for Tuesday around the world and is being covered by the RT news channel. Doubt it will raise a blip on the other channels but you never know. The occupy movements started out small but over time got enough press and got more thinking about the 99% vs 1% figure. Maybe the anonymous/Vendetta masks will grow in numbers and be a spark for more action to change. |

Re: Why pay them wages ?
Personally, I have no problem with expenses. If they are needed. The trouble is, most of the expenses claims we have seen from MPs are arguably not needed.
Why should we be paying one MP to heat his estate? Why should we be subsidising their meals so heavily? Why should we be helping them with their rent/mortgages? Yes, MPs are sometimes required to work late. Fair enough. So are Doctors. So are Nurses. Yet, they don't get heavily subsidised second homes. They don't get heavily subsidised quality meals. They (in my experience) get the same sort of food you get at BHS for slightly more than you pay at BHS. I believe that the government has been actively encouraging trusts to sell off the on-site accommodation that used to be available to Nurses, doctors and (in some cases) other hospital staff. Yet, in the event of a major accident or emergency, these people would be expected to be available and in work within a few minutes. Everyone from the cleaning, maintenance and catering staff through to the medical and surgical staff can be called in with little notice. I know people don't think about the cleaning, maintenance and catering staff, but even in a major emergency, the hospital needs to be kept clean, the equipment may need repair and the staff and patients need feeding. MPs seem to believe they need second homes more than the aforementioned hospital staff, yet how many times does Parliament sit in the evening or at night? Take my local MP. She claimed for a second home near parliament. Why? Is her constituency hundreds of miles from Parliament. No. It's 15 miles. Should she have ever been required to stay late for a session, she could have been driven back to the constituency in less than 40 minutes. I know, I've done the opposite journey on many an occasion. Wish I got the expenses they do. Unfortunately, working in the public sector, all I get is either 30p a mile, or my fare by the cheapest route (this is checked) paid and some money toward one meal. This is IF I am called to work off campus for whatever reason. If I am working on campus (even if it's after hours) I am expected to do it as part of my job, even if it's out of hours. |

Re: Why pay them wages ?
This is the solution, build/obtain a hotel near Parliament, and every MP is given a room, and they are not paid for a 2nd home.
The hotel would include a restaurant(s) and rooms for each of the main parties to have private meetings, this would save us a shed load of cash. |

Actually, there isn't - that's why they had to build Portcullis House for overflow offices, as well as offices in Millbank and Parliament Street.

just did a google search for virtual tour of the house of commons and the first link shows the chamber. I think the lack of space comes from poor utilisation of the area lol |

"Bunks in the office lol" - in the hundreds, if not thousands of nights I spent away on business, did I ever expect to sleep in the office....
Re 'poor utilisation of space' - it could be the listed building status that prevents putting up of partition walls..... |

I think the main thing that winds me up is simply that people see what top civil servants and MPs are given in terms of wages and expenses and assume ALL government employees are like that. Really. They aren't. |
