TiVo Update/Netflix

Couldn't find an existing thread so I though I'd create one for discussion the TiVo update and Netflix, rather than it clog up the 'Coming soon thread' ;)

Got the update today in Manchester, and amongst the things already mentioned on other threads, the 'TiVo Live Guide' alternate EPG layout has been added as an option

i.e. this one http://reviews.cnet.com/2300-12982_7-10011139.html which works like the 'favourites' EPG option that's on the V boxes (for those that used it)

Re: TiVo Update / Netflix

Thanks for the confirmation. I'd much prefer this way of navigating through the EPG rather than the current 2 hour block way.

Personally never really had an issue with the speed overall and I haven't got an non-upgraded box to do a comparison against, so couldn't really say for certain.

However there are some new small transition effects when moving around that cover the jumps in screens, which is a nice touch and helps to smooth out the experience (was a bit doubtful when colleagues on the trial told me about them)

Re: TiVo Update / Netflix

I haven't seen the red circle or a please wait when setting a series link since the update, and when you delete a show from a folder it doesn't jump straight down to the folder if you've kept older episodes for it. Think I actually slept better now it shuts up in standby too :p:

This EPG is also what you get with the TV Anywhere iPad app.

Does the alternate TiVo EPG allow you to default to Favourites?

I don't think so - although as I don't use favourite channels, didn't check it

Press 'Guide' on the remote, then press 'Green' and then there is option for layout

Not sure why the update is being slowly rolled out still? I understand pilot areas but surely it's been tested enough to know it works now so surely they should release to everyone at once??

I'm just bitter as being in my area I'm the last to get everything

The rollout hasn't started yet, and won't do until the pilot completes successfully.

For many reasons it won't be released to everyone at once. The roll-out will take a few weeks. We still expect to complete by the end of the year.

Even though I don't know where you are, I can confidently say your area is not "always last". Because no area is always last. :)

Re: TiVo Update / Netflix

Doing it all at once makes no sense.... best to get it right. Hence why they do it in areas...

I would have thought one reason it's better to roll out area by area is in case something goes wrong in mass deployment and foobars half the boxes. This happened when I first started working where I am now. I'd had NT 4 Service Pack 2 installed for several weeks on various machines, didn't notice any problems, so we rolled it out to the staff. Half our PCs were effectively torpedoed by it. We got all of them working, but it took a long time and a lot of man hours.

Then there is intstallers, engineers and other physical resources. I suspect it's inevitable that some boxes, when flashed with the new software will fail during the upload. I doubt Virgin have nearly enough installers to cope if this happened on a national scale.

Most of Sky channels on Virgin now (and have for a while) carry their corresponding red button Sky On Demand features. These are in the full Sky livery (blue & yellow) and are specific to the channel the red button was pressed.

However approach Sky On Demand from Virgin's (home) Catch Up & On Demand, then the livery remains Virgin red on a TiVo and if IIRC (it's been a long time) black & yellow on a V+.

(Sorry the ability to take and apply a decent screen shot is a little above my current skill set!)

Thanks Spiderplant. Any chance you could post screen shots of the new 'My Planed Recordings' screen and 'Manage My Series Links' screen?

They are the ones I'm most interested in... to see the new HD versions. I've searched Google several times or them in the past, but with no results.

Thanks.

Netflix is well worth it when it arrives soon as there's plenty on there and its no more in money then two pints of beer so for us it will represent extremely good value.

I think he is refering to Sky On Demand via the Virgin menu system. See SpiderPlants pics

Nope. It might be network maintenance, but that's unlikely at 1am on a Saturday. More likely to be a fault.

STB updates are only done on weekdays (usually Tuesday to Thursday), and later in the night than that (usually between 2am and 6am). A message is displayed on the screen saying what is happening, so you won't be in any doubt.

That is wonderful; it used to take around 15 minutes (guesstimate) to update mine. I used to switch to another device whilst it was doing the update because took took so long. Mind you, I do have a lot of series links and Whishlists.

Come on VM, dammit!

This is one of the reasons I upgraded to Tivo this week.
I can't hear Sons of Anarchy over the sound of my old xbox 360 running the Netflix app, so I signed up for a quieter future promised by migrating my Netflix-ing to Tivo.
It's not as if VM like to wait until they're sure all the bugs have been ironed out...is it? ;)

Holding off going for the 1 month free trial incase VM do a promotion similar to Spotify and give 3/6 months free.

I'm a bit overwhelmed with shows at the moment-Dracula looks good (thanks to the preview on demand), Walking Dead is back and gorier than ever, have just started watching Deadwood which i missed first (and second) time around, loving the Blacklist, season 2 of Arrow. And that's just off the top of my head. Very excited about Netflix on TiVo, but think I'll leave the free trial/subscription to the Spring/Summer lull - I'm only 2 seasons in to Breaking Bad and 4 in to Dexter, so it'll be something to look forward to!

And any news on pricing?

I have looked at the VM website, but there is nothing there. I would guess they are waiting for it to finish rolling out completely before giving out pricing.

Thanks but it is tough to see how it could be any better than the Ian Richardson original... one of the greatest acting performances ever....

So would something like Downton Abbey stay on Netflix once it is on or does it vanish after a while?

"No" to all three :)

It's still pilot. The roll-out plan isn't set in stone, but there is no chance it can be completed by the 6th.

Netflix UK has up to season 6 of Dexter. I've not seen any announcement as to when the last two seasons will be added to UK, but the US Netflix (who previously didn't have it), will have all 8 seasons added, in two stages, by January 1st 2014.

So its highly likely that quite a few could be waiting till December then?.
